ForewordDear Readers:

“India lives in its villages,”

said Mahatma Gandhi

and that holds true for us

because ‘L&T Construction

also lives at its project sites”.

Our business, profits and

clients revolve all around

our sites. Similarly, our

CSR is deeply connected

with project sites and our

stakeholders there.

Recently, I was invited to

make a Presentation on

CSR at one of the Project

Accountants’ Conferences.

I shared the What as CSR 1

and the Why as CSR 2.

CSR 1 known as Samajdhaari

is a Qualitative measure,

as mandated by GRI and

ABRR (Annual Business

Responsibility Reporting)

and rates an organization

for its Corporate Governance

and fine DNA. It is all

about strategy, the process

that integrates and

manages aspects of the

environment- power,

water, alternate energy,

pollution control measures,

energy conservation,

workers safety and health,

waste management, reuse

resources and such mandated

disclosures.

CSR 2 is Dildaari which is a

barometer of a socially-giving

organization and mandated

by the Companies Act and Bill

and Section 135- Schedule

VII. It is a set of sequential

initiatives and activities of

economic sustainability,

health, support to mother

& child, hygiene, schooling,

education, greening and aid

to the specially abled for

societal impact.

One needs to understand

both these concepts at and

around our sites to deliver

better CSR in concrete terms.

Did you all know that

2015 is designated as the

International Year of Light

(IYL) and the International

Year of Soils (IYS) by the

United Nations? The whole

aim of this IYL declaration

is to raise our awareness of

the achievements in light-

science and its applications

and importance to

humankind while IYS

is to increase awareness

and understanding of

the importance of soil for

food security and essential

ecosystem functions.

I wish every reader a Happy

CSR.

The cost of processing a paper ticket is

approximately $10, while processing an e-ticket costs only $1. In the near future, e-tickets will be the only option, saving the airline industry $3 billion a year.

In addition to financial savings, the sheer amount of paper eliminated by this process is commendable.

5EDUCATION

Even after sixty-seven years of independence, education remains a distant dream for thousands of children in our country. While children in the urban and semi urban areas have relatively easier access to education, children in rural and extremely remote areas are denied this privilege due to reasons such as domestic compulsions of having to work for livelihood and discrimination.

In such a scenario, it is imperative for us to address their grievances, remove their inhibitions, create awareness and motivate them. It is important to reach out to them to fulfill their requirements and thereby facilitate a smooth and easy learning process.

Swami Vivekananda said “If children can’t go to school why not bring the school to the children?”

Single Teacher Schools (STS)provide multi grade class education for children post their normal schooling hours. Children who attend STSs are either attending government schools or are drop outs. As the single largest ‘on-field CSR intervention’ in the area of ‘Education’ for 2014-15, L&T Construction is aiding 150 such centers in over 125 rural villages spread over the districts of Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram and is reaching out to 4500 rural children through this initiative. The aim of this project is to impart quality based education at the primary and middle levels to holistically improve a child’s learning achievement rate and nurture him/her to be responsible citizens of the country.

Prema who hails from Maduramanglam village

is a 7th grader studying in STS centre for the past 4 years. Her father works as a duty driver and mother works for daily wages in the field. Prema has an elder brother who is in grade 10 and her sister studies in grade 4. All three have been benefiting from the Single Teacher School, says Mrs.Aruna, the happy mother of Prema.

“I love coming to this centre as I can learn not only subjects but also enrich my

GK (General Knowledge). My ambition is to become a doctor and I know communication is very important. Here our Acharya Logi Mam teaches us spoken/written English as well as phonetics. Earlier I used to feel shy to speak out, but now I participate in Oratorical and debate competitions and have won many prizes. I also write articles on social issues for the children’s newsletter. In the STS centre, Saturday class is exclusively for recreational activities,

moral science, art and crafts and library reading. I study in a Government School and there my class teacher gives me assignments but I cannot access the school library as it is meant only for 10th and 12th grade students. I finish the assignment by referring to the books at our STS library. Here there is no exam fear and even though the portions are not completed in school, the teacher at STS Centre finishes the subjects well in advance. Logi mam says certain questions are important and advices us to prepare well and same will be replicated in the question paper and we score very good marks”

Logeswari who is the centre Acharya, is full of praise for Prema. She says “Prema is really hard working and dedicated”. During her free time, she also takes classes for junior class students like a teacher using black boards, Logi added.

ExpRESSIoNS

Senthil Kesavan, a grade 6 student is a native of

Vadamanglam, a village known for being a stronghold in embroidery, weaving and pottery.

He says that he is able to learn better in the STS Centre than in the regular school because Acharya Mageswari takes classes by giving examples and meanings for tough words unlike his school teacher.

Senthil’s ambition in life is to become a police officer and therefore as per his Acharya’s advice, he takes active part in sports and athletics. The boy who was roaming around aimlessly has been transformed into a very responsible child. He spends quality time learning in the centre and also shares many moral stories taught by the STS teacher with his friends at school.

With the prevailing power crisis in southern India, these schools help children study peacefully as the centresas they are equipped with solar lamps.

The teaching faculty at STS centers is well trained in teaching methodologies and follow a syllabus that has been developed by eminent retired educationalists in line with the government curriculum.

L&T Construction’s CSR team has been constantly monitoring and evaluating the Single Teacher School through field visits, supervising the teaching methodology and interacting with students and their parents in villages. The progress is tracked at every stage and valuable suggestions are provided for necessary course corrections.

Vishal is a 4th grade student at a government

primary school in a remote village called Khiloy. Vishal was a lazy boy showing no interest towards studies says

his mother Hamsaveni. But Vishal was at no fault she added because the school had no teacher for past three months. While Hamsaveni was considering

the option of migrating from the village in search of a good government school in one of the neighbouring villages, she was introduced to the STS centre which made her change her mind.

The acharya Premalatha transformed Vishal as she teaches with complete dedication and gives individual attention, said the delighted mother. Thus the little boy’s ambition of becoming the district collector could soon transform into reality.

No country can really develop unless its citizens are educatedNelson Mandela

• Qualities required for being sympathetic and empathetic towards patients and their colleagues at work place

• Managing ego, jealousy and negative thoughts

• How to be happy and positive in all situations

• Understanding oneself, others and the organization for achieving self and organizational targets

• How to be self-motivated, self-confident, strong-willed and committed

• How to accept a situation with positive attitude and move forward

Prayas organized an awareness talk for the patients who visit the Medical Centre for common ENT problems and ways to keep the ears, nose and throat healthy. Following is the advice given by Dr. Swarnasaravanan.

Prayas members re-live their childhood on Children’s Day

“We were all children once. And we all share the desire for the well-being of our children, which has always been and will continue to be the most universally cherished aspiration of humankind.”- United Nations.

The members of Prayas Trust, Bangalore Chapter celebrated Children’s Day at Seva Sadan, Girl’s Orphanage in Malleswaram, Bangalore on 15th November. Various games and events were conducted for the 56 children of the orphanage.

The excited children exhibited their creativity, competitive and team spirit as they enthusiastically participated in all the activities. Ms. Geetha Subramanian also recited the ‘Harikatha kalakshepa’ for them. Prizes were given to all the children for their whole-hearted participation.

Awareness talk on ENT care

Ear

Faulty habits, like cleaning the ears with earbuds, bathing in ponds or lakes can cause ear infections and therefore have to be avoided. Nerve injuries can be caused by systemic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and hence these diseases should be kept under control. Continuous exposure to noise such as working in factories may lead to hearing disabilities and those prone to high frequency noise levels must undergo regular audiograms. Audiograms help in checking the type and degree of hearing impairment and are useful in deciding the course of treatment.

Nose

Nasal allergies are the root cause of several problems of the ear and the nose and can be avoided by testing for the causative agent and avoiding the same. Nasal bleeding is commonly caused by hypertension in adults and hence blood pressure has to be kept under control. As a first aid, during nasal bleeding, the nose has to be pinched and ice packs have to be applied and then the patient has to be taken under medical care.

Throat

Smoking is the chief cause of laryngeal carcinoma (throat cancer), which may warrant removal of larynx in advanced stages of the disease. Therefore it has to be avoided. Abuse of voice by singers, teachers and hawkers cause vocal polyps leading to hoarseness of voice and can be dealt with by voice rest and speech therapy.

Prayas Trust conducted a comprehensive health camp for the children at the Government school in Kolapakkam, Chennai. General health screening, blood and eye tests were conducted during this camp and free spectacles were distributed to the
