The seventy two disciples who were sent out by Jesus to go “ahead of him to
all the towns and places he himself was to visit” represent all of us in our different vocations. As spouses, parents, teachers, ministers in the church community, friends, spiritual guides, political or civic leaders, we open the
way for others to meet God, “go ahead of him.” To be a disciple is not only to follow, but to go ahead of the Lord announcing his presence.
An active Christian life always involves service to the community, it requires following and imitating, but it also requires going out, a making present of
the Lord in the world. We are called to be apostles in our baptism; we cannot delegate the responsibility.
Unlike Paul and the seventy two, we may not always understand exactly where our mission lies but it is found in the daily struggle to be faithful to Jesus. Where do we find God, or rather where does God find us? God is present everywhere - in our participation at Mass, reading of the Bible and prayer both before the Blessed Sacrament and at always in our lives. He is ever present in - love and friendship, a sunset or sunrise. His hand is in our
food and drink, our work, study, reflection and insights. He is ever present in our efforts to live well, to stay clean of drugs, alcohol or crime. God is in the
midst of real life and in the centre of the soul.
Today, Jesus recommends a specific greeting for his disciples to use when entering a home: ’Peace to this house!’ whatever house the disciples go into this should be their greeting. Like the traditional Irish blessing—’God save all here’ - these words set a tone. Jesus explains that if a person of peace lives in that house, ’your peace will go and rest on him.’ the peace blessing offered by the disciples will spread to those they meet. Peace should be our number
one consideration in our dealings with others.
“Say: Peace be to this house.”

“To her I send peace, flowing like a river”
The intimate relationship of God with his chosen ones is described in terms of the bond between a mother and her child. It is a love that nourishes, renews and
restores.
“The only thing I can boast about is the
cross of our Lord Jesus Christ”
The priority for a believer is not adherence to a particular system of rules or regulations but a new attitude which recognises that Jesus and his sacrifice
call out for a response which can only be measured in love.
Gospel: Luke 10: 1-12, 17-20
‘Your peace will rest on that person”
The right companions and the right ‘equipment’ - no unnecessary
‘baggage’ — are required in order to present an authentic Gospel message to
the world. Time should not be wasted on those who reject the message but
instead energies can be focussed on healing and help.
