OverviewPower BI is a suite of business analytics tools to analyze data and share insights. Microsoft describes Power BI as an end-to-end solution for building and presenting analytics to end users. Power BI provides a set of tools that covers the entire analytics life-cycle – from connecting to dozens of different data sources, performing data preparation, building robust visualizations and facilitating both traditional and ADHOC analysis from desktops and mobile devices. Power BI connects to a wide range of on-premises and cloud based data stores and is able to access both SSAS tabular and cube data.

Power BI DesktopPower BI Desktop is Power BI’s authoring tool. The desktop allows you to connect to on-premises and cloud based targets and query, model, transform, clean and analyze that data. You can then visualize and publish your reports to the Power BI Service - all using Power BI’s desktop tools. The desktop allows users to create reports that are optimized for mobile devices.

Power BI ServiceThe Power BI Service is a cloud-based system that allows users to build, collaborate and share data analytics. The Power BI Service is able to access both on-premises and cloud based data stores. To fully leverage all of Power BI's features and functionality, you build, model and create reports using the Power BI Desktop and upload the PBIX files the desktop creates to the Power BI service.
