Dear Pelican Families One and All,

It has been such a special week, with almost everyone back at school and Year 2 settling back in happily to their extensive area at the Upper School. The weather has at times been extremely hot, but the children and staff have coped very well – and in some respects there is no better time to be at pre-prep: the sprinkler has been working overtime and Mrs Heftman and I looked out of the window yesterday to find everyone running in and out of the sprinkler with delight. Such joy. On being told that they would be going to the Upper some of the Pelicans in Year 2

thought that they had simply “missed out” the Prep! Not sure what Mr Piper would think about that!

APP Second Hand Uniform Sale, Monday, 29th June, 2.45 – 5pm I am grateful to Mrs Clark and her team of helpers for finding a way to hold a socially distanced second hand uniform sale on Monday afternoon on the grass at the front of The Pelican. Only contactless payments will be accepted.

APP Treasurer Needed from September! As Dr. Sinclair’s child moves on to the Prep, the APP are looking for a new Treasurer to help them from September. Do contact Mrs Whelan if you would like to find out more about the role.

Move Up Day – Nursery Children not in Session Next Wednesday the children will spend some time with their new class teachers. We are arranging it differently to previous years to ensure social distancing is maintained. The children already in school will visit during the school day. Nursery children who are not usually in session on a Wednesday are very welcome to join in. Please bring them to Nursery at either, for Beech 2 – 2.30pm, or Maple 2.30 – 3pm. They will be able to go home straight afterwards.

Pelican Fun Run

What a wonderful week we have had for our Pelican Fun Run! Mr Palazon was so impressed that, despite challenging temperatures, every Pelican gave 100% effort and demonstrated outstanding energy levels. Each Fun Run was filled with smiles, giggles, lots of laps, sweaty heads and delicious ice lollies!

Pelican School Painting If you are wondering how to remember your child’s time at the Pelican, then a print of the painting that hangs in our entrance hall may be just the thing. We have only a few of these Pelican paintings left and are selling them, with a mount, for only £8.00 each. If you would like one please send payment to Mrs Ewbank in the school office in the form of cash or a cheque made out to the Perse School.

Photographs Pret-a-Portrait are currently having an End of Year, School Photo Sale. Details are available via this link: https://r1.dotdigital-pages.com/p/FDT-H7H/end-of-school-year-school-photo-sale

Attain magazine This magazine comes from IAPS (the Independent Association of Prep Schools) of which we are a member. The last few months have been challenging for everyone and in this month’s copy there is an article by Julie Robinson exploring how parents can help children tackle their worries. https://attain.education/magazine/pelicannurseryandpreprep

Backpacks for KS1

From Year 1 children may move on to using our backpacks instead of bookbags. As children have more and more to bring into school the backpacks are helpful in keeping everything together and give children both hands free on the stairs. The children also use them at the Prep. If you would like to purchase a backpack please complete the attached response form and return it (in an envelope marked with your child’s name and bubble group) to the School Office by Wednesday 1 July together with payment of £18.00 in cash or by cheque payable to The Perse School.

Name tapes There has been some confusion over name tapes and it seems that Cash’s have changed the details on their website. If you need to buy name tapes for your child on their website please select the ‘12mm label’ and then select ‘Style 17’. A link to the website can be found here.

Club Pelican

This summer we are looking forward to welcoming back lots of Pelican children at Club Pelican, held at the Pelican! The weekly timetables have been updated and are attached for your information. You may notice that some activities have been changed or adapted because of the current safety guidelines. However, they still look very varied and exciting. Club Pelican runs from 8.00am – 5.30pm each day. You can drop off and pick up at your convenience, using the Nursery gate entrance. Morning snack, lunch and

afternoon tea is provided. Lunch will continue to be picnic style but will include some classic hot items that we know the children love.

Each week when the children arrive they will be told which ‘bubble’ they will be based in. Nursery pupils will be based in Nursery. Reception pupils will be either be in Nursery or will join the Year 1 and 2 pupils in the hall. We have ensured that Reception pupils are in broad friendship groups. Both groups will follow the same timetable and have identical activities and play opportunities in the main playground. Each day your child will need a water bottle, a pencil case, their sunhat and if necessary a coat. Sunscreen should be applied before school. Please name everything!

Please note that during the holidays the Pelican school office will be closed. Should you need to contact us during the day please call or leave a message on 07763 196267 or email [email protected]

** Due to a duplicate booking there is availability for one child in Week 1. This would be ideal for a Nursery or Reception pupil as the space is in the EYFS ‘bubble’. If you would like to book this remaining space please do so directly via the Parent Portal**

A1307 Cambridge South East Transport project

We received details of the upcoming works that will be taking place at the Babraham Research Campus roundabout, the junction with Babraham High Street and the A1307 from 6 July 2020. The works will continue until autumn 2020 and, as they will inevitably cause a high level of disruption, I am attaching a link to the website for your reference. www.greatercambridge.org.uk/A1307

Perse Business Network: Perse Innovation Panel The Perse Business Network brings together Old Perseans and parents to connect and share ideas. Our next event will be a virtual inter-disciplinary panel discussion focusing on how different industries are adapting in response to Covid-19. The event will take place on Zoom from 5-6pm on Monday 6 July. RSVP to Erin Charles – [email protected].

Birdsong Online, 1-4 July 2020 Old Persean Alastair Whatley (2002) has directed a new production of Birdsong, filmed entirely during lockdown, which will be streamed from 1 – 4 July in order to raise money for the Royal British Legion. For more information and tickets please visit: https://www.birdsongonline.co.uk/

And on to September … The Secretary of State for Education has made it very clear that he wants all schools to re-open to all pupils in September, and the move to I metre social distancing plus other precautions will facilitate this. There will be much detailed DfE guidance to follow, and we are expecting a busy summer as we respond to emerging regulations, risk assessments, and a better understanding of Covid 19 to ensure a safe and successful school re-opening in September.

We are not likely to hold assemblies or go on school trips; choir will need to be put on hold and we shall have to see what the guidance is before deciding on Christmas performances. However, we hope to be able to have all year groups based at the Pelican. We will write to all parents in August with details of our re-opening plans, but we are pleased to say that we are moving from a lockdown default of ‘it is cancelled unless we tell you otherwise’ to a ‘it will occur unless you are told differently’ situation. Education cannot be put on hold, and we must all learn to co-exist with Covid 19 as safely as reasonably possible.

End of Term Arrangements The end of the year will soon be upon us. A reminder that Nursery and Reception will finish at 11.45am and everyone else should be collected at 12.00 noon next Friday.

Finally .. what better way to end? Thoughts from one family after a particularly intense week of home learning, prior to returning to school:

Home schooling is gruelling, it has to be said. It’s amazing nothing stays in that sweet little head. So hear us, dear teacher, We simply can’t beat ya, We have to get back to the real school instead!

Our very best wishes to you all, Mrs W and all the staff at The Pelican [email protected]
