    the clubs newest member

    A great fellowship night!

    Last February 15, RCHS held a Valentine fellowship night at therean Silla Garden Restaurant, oby prospective member Cecille Pachef instructor at the Heny Sison nary School. Members were treto gastronomic delight with kim

    japchae, samkyupsal, beoseot ha jeon, and an array of appetizecluding kimchi. Rotarians Dr Jung and Dr Myeong Kim hadteaching everyone how to better

    the dishes. Miss Park graciousfered a big discount on the tab. Park also owns the Silla Restalocated along Timog Avenue.

    Dr Marlene gave everyone a Valetoken that she herself made. dinner, CP Nides, IPP Dodgie, Ric, Ed, Kent and PE Marcia staround for some relaxing talk drinks.

    D3780 commemorates Rotary Anniversary 2012 with community service undertakingsPresident Ped Condeno represented the club during the 2-day commemoration by RI District 3780 of Rotarys 107th year. Photbelow shows District Governor Jess Cifra, Spouse Helen, SP Ped and some of the silver presidents who arrived early for the districwide medical, dental, optical, and diagnostic mission on February 25. Close to 2,000 patients from poor families were served bthe mission organized by RC Kamuning and other host clubs, partner organizations, and volunteers. District commemoration o

    Day 2 consisted of a 5-km fun run organized by RC Diliman and co-hosts which raised funds for cancer-stricken children.

    Five officers of the Interact Club of Holy Spirit National HighSchool led by President Harold Maggay participated in the Dis-trict Interact Conference held last February 18, 2012 at the

    Rotary Center, with RC Uptown Novaliches as lead host club.

    Our Interactors wereamong 98 delegatesfrom 18 high

    schools. The high-lights of the Disconwere the presenta-tion of projects andaccomplishments ofInteract clubs in2011-12, and theelection of new Inter-act District Repre-sentative. The Inter-actors of Holy Spiritcited their key role inthe massive book-donation and distribution project of RC HolySpirit. Senior district officers spoke during the Discon. They

    were led by District Governor Jess Cifra who delivered an inspi-rational message.

    The Rotary Club of Holy Spirit will hold a 1-day 1st Gov. Jess CChess Cup on March 31, 2012 (Saturday) from 8:00am to

    5:00pm at the Rotary Center. The categories in the tourname

    shall be as follows:

    Group 1 - Interactors and Rotaractors

    Group 2 - Rotarians

    Group 3 Club Team combination Rotarian and Interactor/Rotaractor (1 Rotarian and 1 Interactor or Rotaractor) or if a does not have an Interactor/Rotaractor representative, the clcan invite students from the respective schools they have bee

    associated.

    The tournament shall be under a 7-round Swiss System with t

    limit of 20 minutes per player.

    Each category will have a Champion, 1st Runner-Up and 2nd R

    ner-Up as well as raffle prizes.

    Each club can send as many as 3 participants but only the plawith the most number of wins under Groups 1 & 2 shall be cosidered for the Group 3 total club score. The Registration feeshall be P300 per participant. Deadline for registration on Ma

    24, 2012. We need to raise tournament sponsors-donors.

    Rotary: The first four Rotarians Rotary: Firsts and other facts

    On 23 February 1905, Paul P. Harris, Gustavus Loehr,Silvester Schiele, and Hiram E. Shorey gathered in Loehrsoffice for what would become known as the first Rotary clubmeeting.

    Harriss desire for camaraderie among business associ-

    ates brought together these four men and eventuallyed to an international organization of service and fel-owship.

    Rotarys founder,Harris, was born in Wisconsin, USA, on 19 April1868. He was raised by his paternal grandparents in Vermontand attended the University of Vermont, Princeton, and the Uni-versity of Iowa. He was Rotary president from 1910 to 1912 anda member of the Rotary Club of Chicago until his death on 27anuary 1947. Learn more about the founder of Rotary in The

    , a mining engineer, was born on 18 October 1864 in Car-nville, Illinois. He was a Rotarian for only a few years, never

    holding office at the club or international level. But that first Ro-ary meeting was held in his office, Room 711 of the Unity Build-ng in downtown Chicago. He died in Chicago on 23 May 1918.

    A Rotarian for only a few years, Shorey served as recording secre-ary during the clubs first year. He was born in Maine in August

    1862 and died in March 1944.

    , a coal dealer, served as the Chicago clubs first presi-

    dent in 1905 and Rotary Internationals third treasurer in 1945.

    Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1870, Schiele attended TerreHaute Business College and served in the U.S. Army during theSpanish-American War. He was president of the Schiele CoalCompany from 1902 until his retirement in 1939. He and Harrisbecame lifelong friends and lived near each other on the South

    Side of Chicago. Schiele died on 17 December 1945 and is bur-ed near Harris at Mount Hope Cemetery.

    Originally from Michigan, Ruggles was a graduate of Northwest-ern University in Evanston, Illinois, and joined Rotary at its sec-ond meeting. He was treasurer of the Chicago club during its firstear, president from 1908 to 1910, and a Rotary director from

    1912 to 1913. He is known for having introduced singing to Ro-ary club meetings. His printing company, H.L. Ruggles & Co.,

    printed the first issue of The National Rotarian and the first Ro-ary songbook. He died on 26 October 1959, an honorary mem-

    ber of seven clubs in addition to his home club, the Rotary Clubof Chicago.

    The Object of RotaryFirst formulated in 1910, the Object of Rotary is to encourage andfoster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in par-

    ticular, to encourage and foster:

    FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity forservice;

    SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions,the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, andthe dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity

    to serve society;

    THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotar-ian's personal, business, and community life;

    Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through theirvocations and to practice high ethical standards.

    Community Service covers the projects and activities the club under-takes to improve life in its community.

    International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotaryshumanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world under-

    standing & peace.

    New Generations Service recognizes the positive change imple-mented by youth and young adults through leadership development

    activities, service projects, and exchange programs.
