Purpose

The Placement Test policy is in designed to help place students in a class appropriate to their needs

in accordance with their English language proficiency level at the time of the test.

The Placement Test is conducted consistently and fairly, in accordance with standards relevant to the

six levels of General English teaching: Beginner, Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Upper

Intermediate, and Advanced.

Process

The Ruby Institute Placement Test is 60 minutes long. It consists of four sections:

Section 1 – Grammar (40 multiple choice questions – estimated to take about 15 minutes).

These questions test the basics of grammar.

Section 2 – Reading and Grammar (12 multiple choice questions – estimated to take about

15 minutes). These questions test comprehension and sentence structure.

Section 3 – Writing (short report of between 120 and 180 words – estimated to take about 15

minutes). This section tests written literacy.

Section 4 – Speaking and Listening (10 minutes preparation and a 5-minute interview with the

head of Studies or nominee.). This section tests verbal literacy.

The Placement Test will be graded by the Head of Studies or nominee. The result will be recorded on

a Placement Test Result Record.

As a basis for grading, the marking guide for the test uses the six ELICOS levels, from Beginner to

Advanced, as listed above. Each skill is graded separately. A total grade for the Placement Test is

calculated on a weighted average basis in order to give each skill a comparable value.

Students taking the Placement Test and who wish to Study General English will be placed in one of

the six ELICOS levels base on their total Placement Test results.

Ruby Institute reserves the right, at any time, to retest students whose placement test result could

possibly not be an accurate indication of their actual English proficiency level. As previously

mentioned, the test is designed to help Ruby Institute place students according to their measured

level of proficiency at the time of the test.
