    Ray Dalio (born August 1, 1949) is an American busi-nessman and founder of the investment rm BridgewaterAssociates.[2] In 2012, Dalio appeared on the annualTime100 list of the 100 most inuential people in the world.[3]In 2011 and 2012 he was listed by Bloomberg Marketsas one of the 50 Most Inuential people. InstitutionalInvestors Alpha ranked him No. 2 on their 2012 RichList.[4][5] According to Forbes, he was the 30th richestperson in America and the 69th richest person in theworld with a net worth of $15.2 billion as of October2014.[6][7]

    1 Early lifeDalio was born in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York,United States.[8] The son of a jazz musician, Dalio beganinvesting at age 12 when he bought shares of NortheastAirlines for $300 and tripled his investment after the air-line merged with another company.[9]

    2 EducationDalio received his BA from Long Island University andan MBA from Harvard Business School.[9]

    3 CareerAfter completing his education, Dalio worked on theoor of the New York Stock Exchange and invested incommodity futures.[9] He later worked as the Directorof Commodities at Dominick & Dominick LLC.[10] In1974, he became a futures trader and broker at ShearsonHayden Stone.[9] In 1975, he founded theWestport, Con-necticut based investment management rm, BridgewaterAssociates which in 2012 became the largest hedge fundin the world, as it is today with over $160 billion in assetsunder management, as of October 2014.[9]

    In 2007, Ray Dalio predicted the global nancial cri-sis,[11] and in 2008 published an essay, How the Eco-nomic Machine Works; A Template for UnderstandingWhat is Happening Now,[12] which explained his modelfor the economic crisis.In 2011, he self-published a 123 page volume called Prin-ciples, which outlined his logic and personal philosophyfor investments and corporate management based on a

    lifetime of observation, analysis and practical applicationthrough his hedge fund.[13][14][15]

    In 2013 Dalio began sharing his investment secrets andeconomic theories on YouTube via a 30 minute animatedvideo which he narrates, called How The Economic Ma-chine Works; the video has since been viewed over 1.9million times,[16] and has been translated and made avail-able in Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, German,Italian and French.[17]

    4 PersonalDalio was the only child of Italian American parents. Heresides with his wife in Greenwich, Connecticut, and isknown to practice the Transcendental Meditation tech-nique.[9][18][19]

    In April 2011, together with his wife Barbara, Daliojoined Bill Gates and Warren Buett's Giving Pledge,vowing to donate more than half his fortune to charita-ble causes within his life time.[20]

    In 2014, Dalio was listed as the wealthiest person in thestate of Connecticut, with an estimated net worth of $14.3billion.[21]
