by Jim Thompson PEGeneral ManagerEffective with the April electric bill (March usage), rate adjustments have been approved that better reflect Adams Electric’s costs.

Electric systems are built to meet the maximum demand on the hottest day of the summer or the coldest day of the winter. There needs to be adequate distribution facilities to cover these time periods. If one member uses only one kWh of electricity and another member uses 500 kWhs, the cost to build the line, maintain the distribution system and deliver electricity to both members is relatively the same. It takes just as much infrastructure, the same amount of tree trimming, spraying, pole inspection, accounting, billing, bucket trucks, digger trucks, etc. None of these costs are based on the amount of kWhs used. As mentioned last month, for a comparison, let’s look at the interstate highway system. The interstate system may have five lanes to handle rush hour traffic. The other times of the day and night only a few lanes may be needed to handle the traffic. The infrastructure cost for the road doesn’t change with the amount of traffic. The flow of traffic is variable like the kWh charge in electricity. The infrastructure costs are in the land, concrete, construction, signage, debt, etc. These items don’t change with the amount of traffic flow. The Cooperative currently has 2,242 miles of line energized through our service territory in some of the roughest parts of west central Illinois. If you lay it all out, the lines would go all the way to California and turn around and start heading back. Our density is 3.92 members per mile of line. Historically, utilities recovered most of these fixed costs through the kilowatt-hour (kWh) charge with only a small facility charge. This situation is worse for rural distribution utilities with much more infrastructure to serve fewer members. The economy, energy efficiencies, and member-owned generation is changing. Because of this, even though the number of members continues to grow, the amount of kWhs being sold continues to remain flat or decline. It isn’t fair or equitable to members to recover much of the fixed charges through kWh sales. Members

using more kWhs are covering more of the fixed costs. Over 15% of our membership uses no energy or fewer than 100 kWhs during certain months. These are mainly recreational accounts (cabins, hunting camps, etc.) Because not enough kWhs are consumed, these members are not covering their share of fixed costs. Our goal is to make rates fair and equitable for all members. Although we will still be collecting many of the fixed cost through the kWh charge, the following changes are a step in the right direction. Starting with the April electric bill, the facility charge for our base rate A (the rate most of our members are on) will go from $37 per month currently to $43 per month. The second energy (kWh) block will decrease from $0.109 to $0.104. Members on this rate using 2,000 kWh per month or more will see a $1.00 net increase per month because the second energy block decrease will offset most of the facility charge increase. The single-meter electric heat (CAH) facility charge will also go from $37 to $43. The energy (kWh) rates will stay the same. The remainder of the single-phase rates will have the same increase in the facility charge with no changes in the energy (kWh) rates. Multiple occupancy accounts will have an increase of $4.50 in the facility charge with no change in the kWh rates. Members on our two-meter electric heat rate (CHC) and air conditioner rate (CAC) for the second meter will have an increase in the facility charge per month of $1.00. The main meter will have the same increase as mentioned above. With the new billing system, members with single-phase irrigation accounts will see a decrease in their facility charge. We had more administrative work with these accounts that will be eliminated with the new billing system. We will be decreasing the facility charge from $90 to $43. Depending on the transformer size, the minimum may be above $43. Members on commercial accounts and three-phase accounts will receive a letter regarding the changes. The Cooperative recently had two employees retire and one employee resign. We will eliminate one of the positions and use technology to help replace some of the workload. The other two positions will not be replaced until May. This lower employee count will help us drive down expenses. If you have any questions about the changes, please give us a call.

While saving money through greater energy efficiency may be a year-round objective for many members, the way to achieve this goal will vary by season. There are a number of factors that impact energy efficiency, including weather, the age and condition of the home, and desired comfort levels. During fall and winter months, when the out-door temperature is chilly, consumers desire a warm home and seek to keep the cold air out. Conversely, in the spring and summer, the focus is on keeping the hot air from infiltrating cool abodes.

Fall and winter: keeping heat in To maintain a warm indoor environment in chillier weather, there are simple steps you can take to increase energy effi-ciency. Fall is a great time to examine seals on doors and windows to check for air leaks. Caulk and weatherstrip as needed to seal in warm air and energy savings. Similarly, examine outlets for air leaks, and where necessary, install gaskets around the outlet to prevent drafts. During the day, open curtains or drapes on south-facing windows to enable sunlight to heat your home naturally. Close cur-tains or drapes at night for an added layer of window insulation. As the temperature drops lower with the onset of winter, schedule a service appointment for your heating system to ensure it is operating at an optimal level. Tape heavy, clear plastic to the inside of your window frames to create an additional barrier against cold air. Ensure that the plastic is tightly sealed to the frame to help reduce infiltration.

Spring and summer: keeping your cool During warmer months, energy savings and efficiency will require different measures, many of which are inexpensive. If you live in a climate that is cool, open your windows in the evening and turn off your cooling system while sleeping. In the morning, shut the widows and blinds to hold in the cool air. Where practical, plant trees and shrubs that provide shade in warm months and sunlight in

Energy Savings for Every Season

winter. In addition to the aesthetic value, well placed trees can take heat gain from the sun and provide needed shade by creating a canopy for the house. In extremely hot weather, your cooling system works harder to close the gap between the high outdoor temperature and the cool indoor thermostat setting. To lessen the difference in temperature between the two, and to lower cooling costs, set the thermostat as high as you can while maintaining your comfort

level. Moreover, using a ceiling fan in conjunction with your air conditioning can allow you to increase the thermostat setting to approximately four degrees with no reduction in comfort levels. During the hottest months, it’s all the more critical to replace any remaining incandescent bulbs with LEDs. The waste heat from the old bulbs impacts energy use and creates wasteful and unwanted heat. To learn more about additional energy-saving tips and pro-grams, contact Adams Electric Cooperative. Attn: High school sophomores and juniorsAdams Electric is accepting applications for the 2018 Youth to Washington Contest. You do not have to be a member to enter. Up to 34 finalists will travel by charter bus to Youth Day in Springfield on April 18, 2018. During Youth Day, students will tour the Capitol, visit the Abraham Lincoln Museum and meet students from across Illinois. At the end of Youth Day, after brief interviews, four winners and two alternates will be announced! Winners will travel by charter bus June 8-15, 2018 for an all-expense paid week-long tour of Washington, D.C. experiencing the Civil War Battlefield at Gettysburg, the National Cathedral, Smithsonian Museums, Supreme Court, Arlington National Cemetery, the Holocaust Museum, among many other sites. They’ll also enjoy a special twilight Potomac River Boat Cruise.

For many teens, the Youth to Washington program is full of “firsts.” It may be the first time they left the state, visited the nation’s capital or have been away from their family for an extended period of time. Even more are seeing and experiencing the larger world through their own eyes, rather than through their parents’ perspective. That’s the most important first, as it’s truly a “leap” to their next phase and where their journey to adulthood begins. In preparation for Youth Tour, teens learn about cooperatives, our history and grassroots advocacy. Youth Tour sprang from a suggestion of then Senator Lyndon Johnson to a national gathering of co-ops. Johnson felt youth from rural areas would benefit by visiting Washington to see first-hand how government works and gain a wider perspective through the experience. Adams Electric was one of the first cooperatives to send students on this tour of Washington, D.C. From this idea, Youth Tour evolved. Today, high school sophomores or juniors selected by their electric co-ops participate in a weeklong trip to the nation’s capital. The program has grown exponentially since its inception and this year, we saw more than 1,800 high school juniors participate from co-ops in 44 states. Our state typically sends about 70 students with four representing Adams Electric and Adams Telephone.

Clean SlateThe week is interspersed with visits to many D.C. monuments and sites, including Capitol Hill. Activities enable teens to meet a broad spectrum of co-op kids from across the country. Our program creates a safe space for teens to discover the adults they are striving to be. Teens leave behind their hometown identity and venture forward with a fresh slate. Students are encouraged to stretch themselves by talking to those they wouldn’t ordinarily interact with. Teens learn first-hand that their elected officials work for their hometown community. Students often have the opportunity to discuss issues with legislators and our chaperones are always impressed with the interactions and questions asked by our students. Youth Tour culminates in a farewell evening which challenges and inspires teens to make an impact in their communities. As conversations evolve, so too do the teens’ world view – their definition of community often changes from their home town to a broader meaning. I can say that nearly all teens who have participated in our Youth Tour program look back with fond memories of an educational, interesting and eventful week. Many make lifelong friends. For a few, Youth Tour is a transformational experience.

The Road to Self Discovery

Parents remark how their child returned noticeably different – more mature, more confident with bigger goals and aspirations; they have a sense of purpose.

Take the leapYouth Tour is one of the most important programs that Adams Electric Cooperative undertakes. I am constantly impressed by the caliber of students that our co-op sponsors. Our teens are our future, and it’s looking brighter every day. I hope you will consider urging your teen to “take the leap” and join our next Youth Tour. Brown Sugar Pineapple Chicken

2 lbs. chicken tenderloins or skinless chicken breasts pounded thin1/4 cup olive oil2 tsps. cornstarch

Marinade/Glaze:1 cup canned pineapple juice1/3 cup + 1 Tbsp. packed brown sugar2 Tbsp. lemon juice2 Tbsp. ketchup2 Tbsp. red wine vinegar2 Tbsp. soy sauce1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard1-2 tsp. Asian chili sauce1 tsp. each salt, garlic powder, ginger powder1/2 tsp. onion powder

Once very hot, add chicken to skillet. Cook undisturbed for 2-3 minutes, or until nicely browned on one side. Turn chicken over, cover, reduce heat to medium. Cook for approximately 3-5 more minutes (depending on thickness of chicken), until chicken is cooked through. Remove to a plate. Whisk 2 tsp. cornstarch to reserved glaze and

add to empty skillet. Bring to a simmer until thickened, stirring occasionally. Add chicken to glaze and toss to coat. Garnish chicken with lemon zest and green onions. Serve with chili sauce.

Meet Your Employees

Julia BarryBilling AssistantWorking for you since 1997

Tell us about yourself! My husband Jim and I have been married 32 years and have two children, Leena (husband Tyler and adorable grandson Tucker) and Lee. Being a parent is a blessing but having a grandchild is like Christmas morning everyday. I love to sew and am addicted to fabric. If I’m not sewing, I’m reading a book. I enjoy baking but hate to cook. I’m an active member of St. Peters Lutheran Church of Coatsburg and I also belong to Sew Happy Quilters Club. If I’ve learned anything at all: Don’t wait until you retire to do the things you enjoy & see the places you want to visit. Describe the best vacation you ever took: In 1976, my parents took our fam-ily to Washington, DC. It was great to see all of the monuments up close. I will never forget the changing of the guard at Arlington National Cemetery and hope to visit there again. When our children were older, we took them to Chicago on the train to visit the museums. It was freezing but the Christmas displays were fantastic! What are you most talented at? Photography. I love to take pictures that will be memories later.Name one thing that few people know about you: I was invited to be a page for Senator Laura Kent Donahue but passed it up because I didn’t want to leave home. If you were to write a book, what would it be about? The adventures my 12 cousins and I had at our grandparents, Lois and Merle Haistings’ home. We spent a lot of time at their farm and they kept all 13 of us for one week every sum-mer. We got together this summer and enjoyed driving the 1955 International truck that was our Grandpa Merle’s. My brother, Steve, restored it and for the first time, I got to drive it!
