Trial begins for man accused of 1990 murder of UAprofessor

TUCSON - The man accused of killing a University of Arizona
professor andMuslim leader over 20 years ago is set to head to
trial this morning.
Glen Francis, 52, is accused of the first-degree murder of Dr.
Rashad Khalifa athis Tucson mosque in 1990.
Francis was arrested in April 2009 in Calgary and charged with
the murder ofKhalifa, who was the leader of "United Submissers
International," an offshoot ofthe Muslim faith based on a
controversial interpretation of the Quran. Franciswas extradited to
Tucson in June of 2011.
Tucson Police officials say that Francis was named as the
suspect after theDallas FBI matched his fingerprints and DNA to the
victim. Police also said thatFrancis worked for the Tucson Shopper
from January 2, 1990 to January 22,1990, and visited the Mosque on
January 6, 1990 under the pretense ofreporting for the
magazine.
