SMS – Short
Message Service
RapidSMS is an information tracking
tool that collects data over “SMS” or
“Text Messages” from mobile users
RapidSMS allows data to be collected
in real time to enable LGA, State,
Federal, and partners to collect,
analyze, and react to data more quickly.
RapidSMS is supplementary to
paper-based system, AND NOT A
REPLACEMENT.
What RapidSMS does
Fast, easy, inexpensive
data collection
Instant analysis
Information in real time
Web-based data
dissemination
Supplement paper
processes
Ensures active feedback to
field workers
Enables vertical and horizontal
peer review
How it works
Ward focal persons use their mobile phones to send SMS report of daily Ward summaries.
SMS are sent to a toll-free short code number, provided by the GSM providers. (MTN & Airtel
for now) - 24453
The SMS are then analyzed and uploaded into the web site as reports for decision makers at all
levels for action.
Output is viewed on the Dashboard @ http://rapidsmsnigeria.org
Core Requirement
RapidSMS requires adequate time to train the right
personnel to understand the rudiments of following
simple procedures in writing given “sms” codes and being able to dedicate themselves
to deliver on agreed time boundaries in order to add value to its deployment in
obtaining better programme management outcomes.
RationaleInformation on Campaign progress received daily and in
real time
Allows for rapid data collection; instant analysis, and prompt action;
Aids decision making at all levels
Aids planning for national development ; child protection
Web-based data dissemination
Triangulates and revalidates paper-based data tools/ mechanism
