About KL Lifestyle Art Space

Founded in 2011, KL Lifestyle Art Space is a gallery privately owned by Dato’ Gary Thanasan and is located at 150, Jalan Maarof, Bukit Bandaraya in Kuala Lumpur. KLAS’ visibility is high and its accessibility at this prime address in the Klang Valley has

encouraged many walk-ins, thereby raising public awareness of Modern and Contemporary Art. Our chief goal is to offer another avenue for the local public and visitors to view Modern and Contemporary artworks from Malaysia and the region beyond the institutions and existing art museums.

The Malaysian visual art scene is growing rapidly and we find this pace very encouraging. Clearly, today we see greater interest for works by the Malaysian masters and senior artists alongside some emerging contemporary artists from our neighbouring countries especially Singapore and Indonesia. However, we believe more needs to be done to propel it to the same heights as many of our Asian neighbours, such as China, India, Indonesia and even Thailand. It is KLAS’ intention to bring the country’s visual art scene one step closer to — indeed, even, one step ahead of — those of our neighbours. Our Being, a solo exhibition by Jeihan Sukmantoro in 2011, a highly reputable senior artist from Bandung, Indonesia, marks KLAS’s foray into promoting artworks by renowned artists from the region.

As a commercial gallery space, we hope to encourage a secondary market for Malaysian art, particularly for Modern or pioneer works from established senior artists and masters from Malaysia and the region. These chiefly constitute artworks created up till the 1960s and many will be surprised to know that these artworks, as well as artworks by these pioneering artists, are still attainable at a relatively affordable price. With this vision, in September 2012, KLAS embarked into hosting its inaugural Malaysian and Indonesian Modern & Contemporary art auction which received overwhelming response from collectors and institutions. This bold move has enabled us to further strenghten our position as a prime mover of Malaysian art within a short span of three years of our existence in the art business.

KLAS also provides the service of receiving consignments from artists or individual collectors, thereby making their artworks available to interested parties via our gallery or auctions which are held once every quarterly. This will no doubt increase the chances of serious collectors acquiring those hard-to-secure pieces from specific periods, series or individuals and in the process encourage fresh, young collectors.

All art collections have to begin somewhere. What matters most is the steps that follow and, as all serious collectors know, it is important to deal with a reputable source. KLAS offers an assurance of legitimacy for all the artworks that pass through our doors.

KLAS has its presence on the internet too, a comprehensive website at www.kl-lifestyle.com.my that details previous and on-going exhibitions and forthcoming auctions. The website also includes a stockroom with an inventory of artworks for sale and an art sales index which is updated with the last transacted price of artworks sold in our auctions. Latest auction results are updated here and this works well as a guide for collectors to monitor prices of artworks sold in KLAS auctions.

Despite his age of 74, a living legend of an artist is still doing what he is

passionate about and creating more masterpieces back in his homeland that is rich in culture amidst undulating landscape where he lives since he was born in 1939 in Bau. Sarawak-based artist, Raphael Scott Ahbeng is known for his abstract paintings depicting sceneries, especially mountains through various mediums used including oil on canvas and acrylics.

colour red from a rich ironwood called diamond wood (kayu berlian) or “Staas” in Bidayuh, the colour strikingly stands out among the other colours he uses in his artworks.

Before becoming a full-time artist, Raphael was a teacher, cartoonist and a radio producer (in 1975, he joined RTM Kuching as a producer/ newscaster).

His artworks were seen at numerous competitions he participated in, including the Sarawak Shell Open art competition where he was awarded first prize in 1959, 1982 and 1983.

He also managed to get third prize in the Natural Malaysia art competition in 1991. Raphael who is today recognised as one of the most established artists in Borneo, was educated at the Bath Academy of Art, Britain from 1964 to 1967 for the Art Specialist Teaching Course and did a drama course in London, 1973.

Playing an active and important role in the art industry, he was adviser to the Sarawak Artists Society (SAS) in 1999 to 2000, an organisation with the objectives to preserve and promote local culture, arts and crafts and to create interest and appreciation of art. Apart from that, he helped to save the lives of animals through his artworks sold at a Christmas Charity Bazaar organised by the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (SSPCA) in December 2011.

Raphael uses various methods from water colour, acrylic to artworks of copper murals to convey his concern for the environment. His works could be seen in solo and group exhibitions held all over the country including Borneo and Kuala Lumpur.
