January 2001, to Suresh : " Suresh, this Beggar keeps calling you here again and again, and keeps telling you about the Vedas and the importance of the Vedapathashala so that itgets deeply imprinted on your heart and mind that this is the most important work here.Other people may forget, but this Beggar wants you to always remember that the work ofthe Ma Devaki Vedapathashala is the most important work,

Suresh. At any cost it should go on."

"Suresh, in this Ashram, which goes by the name Yogi Ramsuratkumar Ashram, the mostimportant work is that of the Vedapathashala. It is the heart of this Ashram

In the outer space, there are Vedas, Sastras and Veda mantras. Greats rishis, bytheir tapovalam, caught and gave them to the world. The Rishis knew abouteverything. They were not narrow-minded people. They were great lovers of

    mankind.*

Vedas are great treasures. Vedas are everything. They must be protected at anycost.

    *

If the Vedas are not preserved, India will perish. India is rooted in the soil ofVedas.

    *

To tell you the truth, the whole humanity exists because of the Vedas, Vedamantras and the great Masters.

    *

They say: "We do not understand Sanskrit; so why commit slokas to memory?Sanskrit must go." No, no. That is wrong. Even if you do not understand theVedic chanting, go to that place and merely listen to it. That will be good.Chanting Vedas without understanding is also good. Were Vedas arepronounced, go and listen. It will do you good.

It is not easy to get a Guru, a spiritual master. It may take sometimes many births to get a spiritual master. But we must be happy that, at least by Father's Grace, we have got a desire to get a Guru and to come up inspiritual life." ...

    My friends !

This beggar learnt at the feet of Swami Ramdas the Divine name of Rama, and beg, begall of you not to forget the Divine name Rama. Whatever you do, wherever you are, belike Anjaneya-Maruthi, thinking of Rama and doing your actions in this world. At every

stage we face problems, today one problem, tomorrow another problem, the day aftertomorrow another problem. And on account of facing these problems often we getdejected, disappointed, psychologically sick, if we don't remember the name of Divine. So this beggar will beg all of you not to forget the Divine name, Rama. There are peoplewho like to remember the name of Siva. It is equally good. There are people who like torememver the name of Ganapati, equally good. Whatever name you choose, whateverform you choose but give to this beggar what he wants. Never forget the Divine. Live inthe world and the problems will be there. If we are remembering the Divine name, we arepsychologically sound. May be, we may feel a little some of the problems. Even then theintensity with which we feel if we don't have faith in God is much more than a man offaith, a man who remembers the name of Rama. So this beggar is always begging,

begging for food, begging for clothes, begging that you should compose songs on thisbeggar, build a house for me - buy a house for me - a cottage for me - this thing - thatthing - so many things. But this beggar will beg of you this also, and you are alwaysgiving what this beggar has begged. So this beggar begs please don't forget the name ofGod. This Divine name has been always of great help to all in the world.

Yous read Kabir, Tulsi, Sur, Appar Swami, Manickavasaga Swami - how theyemphasised Namasivaya. Don't forget it - this is your heart - this is your soul whether itbe Om Namashivaya or Om Namo Narayanaya whether Rama, Siva or Krishna, whatevername you choose, whatever form you choose doesn't matter. But remember the Lord withany name, with any form of your choice. Just as when there is heavy rainfall, we take an

umbrella, and go on doing ou work in the factory, in the field, wherever we go formarketing and catching hold of the umbrella we go through the rain is falling there. Butstill we work - still we work - do our work. Similarly we have got so many problems allaround. This Divine name is just like an umbrella in the heavy rainfall. Catch hold of theDivine name and go on doing your work in the world. This beggar begs of you : 'Don'tforget the Divine name'. This beggar prays to his Father to bless you all who have comehere. My Lord Rama blesses you, My Father blesses you. Arunachaleshvara blesses you.It doesn't matter to me what name it is. A ll the blessings of my Father for all of you !:Well, that is the end. That is all.

SOME WORDS DISPLAYED IN THE ASHRAM

If you want God alone, why do you accept the existence of anything else?

The Divine descends where there is no selfishness. Even if there is a trace of selfishness, the Divine will not descend.

    *

Father has no ears, but hears.Father has no mouth, but speaks.Father has no tongue, but tastes fruits, etc.Father has no eyes, but sees.Father has no hands, but works.

    *

They all say vairagya, Faith in Guru and repetition of the mantra are all necessary forGod realisation. This beggar says, Faith in the Guru will do. The others will followautomatically.

    *

Whatever happens, happens by Father's will. Whatever happened is His grace. Whateverhappens is perfect because Father is perfect.

    *

Every 'nama' of this beggar helps this beggar, his Father's work and the whole world ...every nama.

Seeing people is only a small fraction of this beggar's work. Most of this beggar's work ishidden.

    *

When people remember this beggar, or even the coconut shell or fan or any eventconnected with this beggar, Father blesses them.

    *

This beggar lives only for Father's work. Father's work is mysterious. It involves the

whole cosmos. That is why so many difficulties. This beggar's work is with the wholecosmos.

    *

Every movement, small or big that this beggar makes is linked with Father's work. It isnot a mere physical movement. Everything is linked in this cosmos. It is a totality. Whenthis beggar rearrange things here, the atmosphere will not be the same again. This beggar

has to be very carefull. Every small movement is connected with the entire cosmos. Thisbeggar prefers no changes.

    *

To want to be happy is to make the Lord happy. To make the Lord happy is to chant Hisname.

    *

Yogi Ramsuratkumar is not the name of this dirty beggar. It is my Father's name. Blessedare those who utter the name Yogi Ramsuratkumar, even once in their life.

    *

Once this beggar signed 'OM' in somebody's book. They asked me to sign my name. This

beggar replied, 'OM' is my best name and first name.

    *

Just as Lord Shiva took 'Alahala' poison and changed it into 'Ambrosia', my Father willchange difficult situations into great blessings for those who work for this beggar.

    *

They say 'Love all, hate none'. This beggar says, 'My Father is everyone'. If you loveFather, you love everyone. What is knowing everything? Knowing everything means

    loving everything.*

This beggar's name is in the sky. This beggar's name can be heard in the sky. Whenanyone remembers this beggar, Father sends help.

    *

Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, always remember that you are doing it forthis beggar, who is all pervading and is everywhere. If you cannot remember that God is

everywhere, just chant His name. That will do everything.*

This beggar has not built any temple nor has he written any books. There is nothing aboutthis beggar's life that is inspiring. But he has left a name for mankind. Father a given aname "Yogi Ramsuratkumar" to Humanity, for its benefit, out of His love.

In this world, nobody is left without any criticism. Without exception, all the great peoplehave been criticised. Even Rama and Krishna! If Rama and Krishna were present today, they would also be criticised (laughter)! You have to put up with it! There is no need to

    run away.

    *

When asked by someone what is right and what is wrong ... This selfishness is wrong. Tothink that you are separate from others is wrong. To think that you are isolated isselfishness. This is wrong. To think that all are one, all in Father and that there is onlyone Life is right.

    *

Chanting the Name is surrender. Chanting the Name is samadhi. Chanting the name isprayer. There is no need to pray separately.

    *

All of you are in Me. I am in all of you. There is nothing else and no one else. I am here, there, everywhere... All pervasive... No one is separate, no one is isolated. It is all onelife, indivisible, total, subtle, subtler, subtlest... Gross, grosser, grossest. But this beggarcannot speak this language to everyone, but only to a few friends.

    *

Whatever this beggar does is a blessing. Even when he shouts at people in anger, it isonly a blessing. They will surely benefit from that. When they sit in the presence of thisbeggar, my Father transforms them, even though they may not be aware of it.

We cannot judge the sea byseeing the outward appearance of the waves. Similarly, youcannot judge things by the outward appearance of them in thecountry now. You should see the depth of the sea. My Fatherhas got many ways of doing things and He knows where to dothat, when to do that, etc. He will definitely do and make ourNation, Indian Nation, Bharata Desam, not only flourishingbut also to lead the whole universe soon. India will show thepath, the right way in every sphere to other nations."

"In olden days, all our rulers, kings and emperors, used toprotect the Sadhus and the Sannyasins - le ralized souls - andpaid due respect to them. At times they used to do 'vadha' -destruction - of the Asuras, when the Asuras tried to torturethe Sadhus or Sannyasins or tried to give trouble to theSadhus.

    bout begging.- Sadhus, sannyasins and

    Masters.-

"In this land begging has never been a crime. Sudhamawas a beggar and he went tot Krishna begging for alms.Krishna received him with all honours. All great saintshave been beggars. My Master, Swami Ramdas, explainsin his 'In Quest of God ' how he went around as a beggar. This beggar himself wandered all over the countrybegging for food, for twelve years. He never used to wearrudraksha or put bhasma on his forehead. He wandered inrags like any other beggar. When this beggar was sittingon the banks of River Sabarmati, ladies who used tocome to take bath threw some coins to this beggareveryday. A day's collection would be sufficient for twoday's food. I am not speaking only of Sadhus,Brahmacharis and Brahmans who are enjoined to beg inthis country. I am speaking for ordinary people who goout begging for alms when they find it difficult to makeboth ends meet. They are not criminals. They beg as thereis no other go." (G.G.Y.)

"Matru devo bhava, pitru devo bhava, acharya devobhava, atithi devo bhava - this is our tradition. We mustgo out to find people seeking alms and entertain them - sosays the Shastras." (G.G.Y.)

"Swami Vivekananda says, if one lakh soldiers arefighting for the nation and 99,999 fall and only onesurvives and unfurls the flag of the nation, it is a victoryfor the nation. In the same way, if by fedding one lakhbeggars one Vivekananda is helped to emerge that is agreat achievement. Swami Vivekananda, during hiswanderins throuhout the lengh and breadth of the countrybetween 1886 and 1893 used to beg for food. I was alsowandering like a beggar from 1947 to 59. Once I had to

L'Inde

leave a town since I was told that beggars were arrestedthere. In Gujarat it was different. Once this beggar wascaught with a few beggars. But the 'beggars' escaped bypaying 'something'. Only this beggar and some Sadhuswere detained for 5 to 6 hours. And at that time a policeofficer came in and asked : "Oh! How were you caught ?

and released me. Once I was travelling in a train, inGujarat, of course ticketless, and was sitting in the seat ofthe TTE. When the TTE came in this beggar left the seatfor him. But the TTE said : 'No, Swamiji. You can sit'.These happened in the land of Mahatma Gandhi."- Q. : Should we encourage begging at our own risk ?

Can we allow a strange beggar to stay one night in our

    house ?

    - Wen a Sannyasi came at the doorstep asking for alms,Sita, at the risk of her own safety, crossed the line drawnby Lakshmana. In India, we habe been taking risks."- According to shastras, alms should be given to those

    who deserve - Satpaatre Daana.

    - When a beggar is standing at the door can you analysewether he deserves or not ? This law against begginf willgo today or tomorrow. Someone who comes to powerwill see that this law is thrashed. I know this law will go.In England and America, beggars are really criminals. For that you can't dub the entire begging community ascriminals. Criminals are there in all sections of thesociety - in the police force, etc. For that you can't callone entire section as criminals.".- In the Upanayanam ceremony : "Bhavati BikshamDehi."

    - Yes, after the Upanayanam, a boy goes to a few housesfor alms. The guru of the great Chatrapati Shivaji,

Samarth Ramdas, was a beggar. Once when he wasbegging, Shivaji wrote in a slip and offered his entirekingdom to him. In ancient days, Kings or Emperors usedto take the advice of the beggars only."- Should the community support the beggar or the

    Goverment ?

    - When Sri Rama's coronation was to take place,Dasaratha gave everything to beggars. The 'beggars' afterreceiving the "alms" had never to beg again. The gifts hegave were so much. Hence when there is a great rejoicingor victory the Government supports beggars. In generalonly the community supports.- Poverty can be removed by giving food and shelter to

    beggars.

    - That will not be enough. We want freedom.- India should become a prosperous country.- India will become more prosperous than any country inthe world. But beggars will not cease to exist. India iswhat it is only because of beggars. If there are nobeggars, India would not be India at all. We beggars cannever live in this holy land if we are not given freedom.Sometimes they catch beggars and take them to beggarhomes and give them training in some skill for 2 or 3

In this ancient Holy Land, many great Mastershave come and always some Great Master or other existshere. In fact, this Holy Land, Bharata Desam - the IndianNation - is lonly the playground of Great Masters. This isour land. It will always be looked after by my Father. Weare lucky to be born in this Holy Land. My Father, LordKrishna, had given assurance to this dirty beggar that inhis Holy Land some great Masters will always exist; Hewill protect them, look after them nicely, at the sametime, He will see that this land, Holy Land, flourishes all

    Meeting with the masters.-

"This beggar was not impressed with Swami Ramdas as he had been with Ramana Maharshi and Aurobindo. This beggarwas not able to understand Ramdas at that time. He understood immediately that the other two Masters were spiritual giants. With Ramdas, however, it was different. It was a kind of reaction... He was living luxuriously and people were serving him

    like a king." (T.C.W.)

    Ramana Maharshi.-

"In 1948, this beggar went again to the South. He went first to the Aurobindo Ashram but could not stay there. Then he wentto Tiruvannamalai and stayed for about two months with the Maharshi." (T.C.W.)

"Once a sadhaka asked a list of questions. One of the eight questions, along with Sri Maharishi's reply, was translated intoEnglish for the benefit of a few beggars like myself, seated nearby. The question : 'If the Guru drops his body even prior tothe shishya having succeeded in his Sadhana, is it necessary for the shishya to seek out a living Guru to guide him further on?' - The reply : 'Not necessary. He can continue in his sadhana and guidance will continue.'" (I.R. - T.D.aug90-jan.91)

(About the tamil word 'seri' : okay, good :)"Astutely I learned that one word from Him (Ramana) and am even today using it, following in the footprints of myMaster!" (T.D. fev.-av.94)

"Bhagavan Ramana used to say : 'Self alone ever is. There are no others.'" (T.D. fev.-av.94)

"As was the custom in Sri ramanashram after puja was performed at the Mother's shrine, the arati plate was placed beforeBhagavan Ramana. One day He took kumkum as usual. I happened to be the first to take kumkum from the small pile whichSri Bhagavan had touched. The mere touch of the same plate put me into an ecstatic state." (The Mountain Path)

"Once, when I was in the presence of Sri Bhagavan, he vividly narrated a fascinating story which is also highly significant.

There lived a pair of birds by the side of the ocean. Leaving their eggs in their nest, they would fly to far-off places in searchof food. One day on their return they were aghast to find that their nest, along with the eggs, had been devoured by thewaves of the sea. They became very angry with the ocean and in all seriousness vowed that they would empty it, ifnecessary, in order to retrieve their eggs. They forthwith started the operation of emptying the ocean by taking the sea waterin their beaks, mouthful by mouthful, and dropping it at a far-off place. They did this endlessly without rest and still theywere one-pointedly dippling their beaks into the ocean and flying off to dispose of the water. One day a great being happened to pass by and, observing the tireless efforts of the two birds, asked them what they were upto. The birds explained that their eggs had been washed into the ocean and that they were determined to empty it in order toretrieve them."What!" exclaimed the great being in surprise and amazement. "But this is impossible! Can you ever hope to empty theocean, two tiny birds, however relentless your efforts may be?- What doubt can there be ? replied the birds. We are absolutely certain that we shall eventually succeed and retrieve ourprecious eggs!"

Moved by their tremendous faith and devotion, the great being compassionately put his hands into the ocean, found the eggs, and returned them to the overjoyed birds.Sri Bhagavan then said : "Emptying the ocean is analogous to knowing God. Alone, without grace, it is impossible. But ifone has the unshakeable faith and earnestness of the two birds in the story, the Guru will appear without fail and fulfill one'sspiritual aspirations." (The Mountain Path)

"On another occasion I was thrilled to witness the compassion of Sri Bhagavan. A devotee, Eknath Rao, brought into theHall a bowl filled with fruits cut into pieces and placed it before Sri Bhagavan. Within the large bowl was a small bowl withpieces especially cut for Sri Bhagavan. Bhagavan's sense of equality was total, and although his tolerance towards devotees

was immense, he would never permit anything special for himself. When Bhagavan noticed a separate bowl for himself, hewas annoyed and pushed the bowl aside roughly. A few pieces of fruit spilled onto the floor and were left there. The devoteethen began to distribute the fruit-pieces to all in the Hall. Everyone sat with a few pieces in their hands, not wanting to eatsince Bhagavan himself did not have any. Out of compassion for the devotees, Sri Ramana reached down, picked up thepieces that had fallen on the floor, and began to eat. The rest of the devotees were then able to eat also." (The MountainPath)

"On April 14th, 1950, when this beggar was moving somewhere in the Himalayas in search of Masters, Maharshi passedaway. In the same year, December 5th, 1950, the other great Master Aurobindo, also passed away. This beggar felt a type ofrestlessness that he had lost the golden opportunity of keeping company with those two great Masters." (T.C.W.)

"When someone asks me why, in that case, I went to Swami Ramdas after Maharshi's passing, I explain that the divinefervour I experienced in Sri Ramana's presence began to wane when I left him and went to stay in the Himalayas.Nevertheless, I had begun to see that a Higher Power was expressing Itself, using me as an instrument. Bhagavan SriRamana Maharshi was a principal influence in shaping this beggar to this state. After His passing away, I did not see anyconflict in going to Swami Ramdas. It was Swami Ramdas who initiated me and gave me this madness ! The inner life ofsaints like Sri Aurobindo, Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi, J. Krishnamurti and Swami Ramdas is far far removed fromwhat we can externally perceive of them. They operate rooted in the Eternal Infinite which can never be 'known'. There is noindividual there to report differences!" (I.R. - T.D.aug.90-jan.91 & The Mountain Path)

    Swami Ramdas.-

"Then one thing very important, it was a third chance to visit Ramdas. The two great Masters had passed away. This beggarthought to himself, 'Let me try again to visit Ramdas, for he is recognised as a great sage.' So in 1952 this beggar did not goto Tiruvannamalai, nor did he go to Pondicherry, for the Masters were not there. But this time Swami Ramdas turned out tobe an entirely different person. At the very first sight, Ramdas could tell a number of intimate things about the life andmission of this beggar which nobody but this beggar knew. Not only that, but the Master started to take a special care of thisbeggar. This beggar felt that he had come to a place where he had a number of well-known friends. This beggar began to feelfrom the environment of the ashram that Ramdas was a great Sage, a truly great Sage. It was then that this beggar first

understood the great Master. Ramdas is the beggar's Father." (T.C.W.)

"Most men wouldn't like to say that they had three fathers, but this beggar had three Fathers. There was much work done onthis beggar. Aurobindo started, Ramana Maharshi did a little and Ramdas finished." (T.C.W.)

"Papa Ramdas wanted this beggar to chant Ramnam all the time. But this beggar has failed to obey his Master." (T.D.nov.94-jan.95)

    Aprs 1952.-

"Pre distribue les devoirs. Tous parmi nous ne faisons queSon travail. A Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, BhagavanRamana, Swami Ramdas et Sri Aurobindo, Il a donn ledevoir d'enseigner. A ce mendiant Il n'a pas donn ce devoir.Avoir foi dans les paroles de ces matres seulement - c'est ledevoir allou ce mendiant. Ainsi, j'ai foi dans les Ecritures, dans les paroles de ces matres. C'est assez pour ce

"Father distributes duties. All of us do only His work. ToSri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Bhagavan Ramana, SwamiRamdas and Sri Aurobindo, He gave the duty of teaching. To this beggar He has not given that duty. To have faith inthe words of these masters alone - that is the duty alloted tothis beggar. Thus, I have faith in the scriptures, in thewords of these masters. That is enough for this beggar !"

This Beggar is not a Rama bhakta. But this Beggar was

- I don't do any work and I live by begging. I live on theearnings of others who work hard. Do you understand now?

    - But the Brahmins are supposed to live on alms. They haveto depend on the society for their food. You are a Brahmin.

How can you say that you are a beggar?

    - No, I am not a Brahmin. I am a Chandala... So nowNivedita believes that I am a beggar because I say so. Butshe doesn't understand what I mean. He has written a lot about this

physical movement. Everything is linked in this cosmos. It's a Totality. When this beggar rearranges things

here, the atmosphere will not be the same again. This beggar has to be very careful. Every small movement

is connected with the entire cosmos. This beggar prefers no changes.

10.- They all say 'Vairagya, Faith in the Guru and repetition of the mantra' are all necessary for God

realisation. This beggar says "Faith in the Guru will do." The others will follow automatically.

11.- Whenever, wherever people talk about this beggar, there Father is present with them.

12.- Whatever we do, we must think that we are doing it for God ... for His sake.

13.- Wherever you are, whatever work you do, just think that you are living for the sake of this beggar in

    Tiruvannamalai.

14.- If you want God alone, why do you accept the existence of anything else ?

15.- Bring again and again to the mind that God is your goal and that you are living for His sake alone. If

you forget, it's alright. Try to remember again and again.

16.- (Pointing to Sannadhi street house in which He was seated) This is Father's cottage. Father alone

feeds this beggar. Father takes care of this beggar. Father alone exists. There is nothing else, no one else.

17.- This beggar is a born-beggar, will remain as beggar, will die as beggar.

18.- This beggar has been living in this God-madness for a long long time. Father controls this beggar's

    movements. Father alone exists.

19.- When we do everything for God, offer all aour actions - every breath, then surreder comes. When God

accepts this surrender, He takes possession of the body, minds and intellect. Then we become His

instruments. Father begins to work through us. We don't exist then.

20.- The best sadhana is to be near one's Guru, to obey and serve him. All other sadhanas are only after

that. This is the best sadhana.

21.- Whatever hapens, happens by Father's will. Whatever happened is HIS GRACE. Whatever happens is

PERFECT, because Father is perfect. His lila is perfect.

22.- Whatever happened is a blessing. It's pure grace from Father. Whatever happens is the best that can

happen. It is good for the individual, good for the whole cosmos. Father has to run the whole cosmos,

whatever suits Father's work, that alone happens.

23.- This beggar doesn't exist. Every thought, word and action of this beggar is governed by my Father,

    who is the cosmic controller.

24.- The Divine descends where there is no selfishness. Even if there is a trace of selfishness, the Divine

    will not descend.

25.- Be grateful to God all the time, for whatever situation He keeps you in.

There are Hydrogen bombs and Atom bombs which are more powerful than any other weapon. If we use these, theworld will be destroyed in no time. Then Brahma will take rest. Then He has to create another world which will takeanother 2000 or 3000 years. Though America and Britain are producing more and more weapons and preparing for anuclear war, it is only my Father who comes in the form of these weapons. These bombs have not been put in thisworld only because oif the Grace of my Father. It is all deceided by Him."

"The most essential and important thing in our life is that we should have faith in God, absolute faith in God. If we donot have Guru Bhakti and faith in Gode, whatever we may possess is of no use. If we have Guru Bhakti and theBlessings of the Guru, then it is more than sufficient and it is more than we can possess materially in this world."

"Un jour les Gopikas offrirent un somptueux repas au sageDurvasa. Elles voulurent plus tard traverser la Narmada pour allervoir Krishna. Elles demandrent au sage de les aider. Durvasaasked them to say : 'If Durvasa lives only on grass, letNarmada give way!" Tey did so and to their uppersurprise, Narmada gave way.
