A devotional "share" from Principal Hedges

One Step at a Timeby Kayla Ferris taken from First5.org

1 Chronicles 22:19a (ESV) "Now set your mind and heart to seek theLORD your God. Arise and build the

sanctuary of the LORD God..."

There's a wooded area behind our house where we like to hike. One section is overgrown with briars. My kids are

scared of getting snagged and scratched on the thorns, so I tell them to follow close behind me. If they stay

close and keep in my steps, I can block the vines and get them through.

Keeping in step with the Lord is something King David worked for his entire life. He knew through experience

that following God kept him on the right path, just as wandering off on his own got him into some sticky

situations. We saw in 1 Chronicles 21 that David's census displeased the Lord and pestilence followed. (

Chronicles 21:7) However, David's repentance brought him back and his sacrifice on the threshing floor of Ornan

led him to a major discovery. This very location was to be the building site for the temple of God. (

22:1)

This is what happens when our eyes are on our Guide. If our first step

is seeking God, our next step becomes a little clearer.

Seek God first, and sometimes that next step will look like a "no." This

is the answer David received when he wanted to build the temple of

God. (1 Chronicles 22:8) Building the temple was a great project. It was

Page 10: RAM NEWS 04.17 · 2020. 5. 29. · If you do not file. ... Have materials ready (check the daily announcements to see what you need) Do not eat food during your meeting (Crunching

important, but it wasn't David's job to do. However, look closely at 1

Chronicles 22. David might not be building the temple, but he does vital

work in collecting and preparing the building materials — materials he

collected from the plunder of the very wars that disqualified him from building. Oftentimes, what looks like a "no"

is actually just a different "yes." David didn't get to build, but he very much prepared for those who would. He

kept his first step on seeking God and his next step became a little clearer.

Seek God first, and sometimes that next step will look like a "go." Solomon was described as "

inexperienced" (1 Chronicles 22:5). His father, David, reminded him to "fear not; do not be dismayed

22:13). The task before Solomon was beyond daunting. He clearly doubted his own ability, and he was not

wrong. It is okay for us to be faced with tasks that feel beyond our abilities. It reminds us we can only do all

things through God's strength. (Philippians 4:13) Solomon, we will see later, prays for God's wisdom and

knowledge. (2 Chronicles 1:10) He sought the Lord, and his next step was clearer. Go! "Arise and work

Chronicles 22:16)

David will say it one more time in 1 Chronicles 22. It is a reminder for Solomon and all of the people of Israel. The

first step? "Set your mind and heart to seek the LORD..." (1 Chronicles 22:19). If this step comes first, the second

step is a little clearer.

This is the rhythm we need for walking our lives' paths. Seek the Lord. Follow His next step. Seek the

Lord. Follow His next step. Over and over and over again. And whether our next step looks like a "no" or a "go,"

we can trust our Father knows the way through.
