“Church friends make the best friends.” As students head back to school, many of our youth are looking forward to getting back to church. For most of our youth program participants, church represents a place to meet other students they wouldn’t know if it weren’t for church. “Going to church at Mount Olivet has shaped me in that I have met some extraordinary people,” said Sophia Spence. “Being a part of church has helped me discover who I am in my faith and impacted my life – it’s an experience I will draw on as I go away to college this year.”

A Message from Pastor HogensonDear Members & Friends, What was supposed to be a two week absence has turned into what feels like a marathon and again I am reminded that “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me,” (Philippians 4:13).

I have moved to a transitional care facility (which is hopefully the last stop before I return to home and the oce). While this certainly wasn’t the summer I had intended, my faith has grown in ways I never imagined. We are called to have faith and trust in God, one day at a time and for the last several weeks I have been living that each day. ere are good days and not so good days, but I remain grateful each day. ankfully, there are now more good days than not so good days. On the days when I am challenged or not feeling well, I remember that when you surrender control and trust God, life is better. I continue to trust God. I am grateful for our wonderful pastoral and church sta who have a great dedication and love of the church. ey have worked hard to continue to make Mount Olivet a church unlike any other. I am excited about what the future holds and the mission and ministries of Mount Olivet. As we kick o our next season, lled with Stewardship dinners, faith, and fellowship, I invite you to look upward, travel onward, and ... Keep Going God’s Way!

Blessings,

Continued from cover ... On September 20, 2015, 198 Conrmands will ocially become

members of Mount Olivet. At Cathedral of the Pines this past summer, Camp Director KRISTI

YOUNGDAHL asked the Conrmands to share what high school they are going to this fall. 41 high schools were named among the 170 9th-grade campers. “It’s unreal,” said Youngdahl. “To see these kids hanging out together, sharing their faith and talking about their highs and lows despite going to dierent schools is really cool. When I travel to other camp or youth conferences and tell people we have more than 40 high schools represented in our youth program, they don’t believe it. But when I think how our youth are united in faith, at one church, with one God, you can’t help but believe that God is up to something good at Mount Olivet!” Turn the pages of this edition of the Mount Olivet Messenger for more information on the good things that are happening in and around Mount Olivet in the coming church year for children, youth, and adults.

LOOKING FORWARD... More than 60 years ago, Mount Olivet members began the tradition of gathering in September after the harvest for food and fellowship and to pledge their gifts for the year ahead. At this time of looking forward, we asked our pastors what they look forward to in the coming church year:

September Rally Sunday, Conrmation Sunday, Stewardship meals, Preschool and Sunday School begin. “ere is so much to love about September at Mount Olivet, I don’t even know where to start!” said PASTOR HOGENSON. “I like the return to the routine that happens for so many people in September … Rally Day signies this – a time to return to routine, return to Mount Olivet, return to what we most need to do – to love and worship the living God.”

Oct-Nov Women’s and men’s groups hold their fall dinners, new members are ocially welcomed, Bibles are presented to 5th-graders, Gala and Holiday Boutique fundraising events are held. “e activity and buzz of people at church each day brings me joy,” said PASTOR KALLAND. “I love all the opportunities we have to help one another in our walks with Christ. From the waiters at church dinners to the Food Drive, Adult Learning programs, and outreach programs, Mount Olivet creates opportunities for us to live out our mission focus of believing, belonging, becoming.”

December “I look forward to gladness in worship and generosity in service as we multiply joy and hope throughout our two-campus congregation and communities we serve,” said PASTOR CORNILS. With 51 services (including a new 11pm Christmas Eve service at Mpls) and 35 service opportunities, Advent and Christmas at Mount Olivet is truly spectacular. is year more than 1,000 voices are expected sing in our Christmas Music weekend. Special children’s, family, and fellowship programs add to the festivities in anticipation of our Newborn King! 100+ families will be reached and 1000+ meals will be served through our Christmas and outreach programs.

Jan-Feb “While some of our members enjoy our online services in the warmth of the sunshine down south at their winter homes, the rest of us don’t just hibernate for the winter” said PASTOR

YOUNGDAHL. “Mount Olivet provides many events and opportunities for members to connect with one another through gatherings, fellowship, and of course, worship!” ere will be 16 services on Ash Wednesday (2/10) at both campuses, Midweek Lenten services, and a special devotional booklet to help with your Lenten walk toward the cross.

March Holy Week begins Palm Sunday 3/20, continues with three chances to witness the Living Lord’s Supper, a worship concert of e Seven Last Words of Christ, Good Friday services (including two children’s services and two Tenebrae services), and concludes with 15 triumphant Easter services on Sunday 3/27. “ere is nothing like Easter at Mount Olivet,” said PASTOR HAMMERSTEN. “I love seeing friends from near and far, the smell of the owers from the altar, the sound of the trumpets, and the moment we sing Jesus Christ is Risen Today! Alleluia!”

Apr-May In the spring, Adult Learning opportunities continue along with fellowship events including the Mothers & Others Tea, Fashion Show, and Mother’s Day Brunch at the Conference & Retreat Center. “I also look forward to Volunteer Sunday,” said PASTOR BAKKEN. “It is a fun way to thank the thousands of volunteers and see the many ministries of Mount Olivet.”

June Vacation Bible School, God’s Kid’s Sing!, and COP Summer Starter are a few of the highlights planned for the summer of 2016. “Spending time with our youth at various camps is denitely one of the highlights of my summer,” said PASTOR MACLEAN. “I love the energy and excitement they bring not just for their friends, but for sharing their faith and deepening their relationship with Christ!”

July-Aug Summer youth programs continue and the popular Motorheads Show takes place. “I also love the Summer Midweek Worship Services at the Conference & Retreat Center,” said PASTOR

ENOCH. “Oering a chance for members and friends to share a meal and worship together in such a beautiful setting is pure grace – it is like making an appointment to be with God.”

Devotions: CompassionAs Jesus went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. – MARK 6:34

What is your denition of compassion? It was in a Sunday morning chapel service at Cathedral of the Pines,

when a 5th-grade camper provided the best denition of “compassion” I have ever heard.

e Gospel lesson for that Sunday was from the 6th chapter of Mark. Jesus’ apostles had just nished telling him all they had done …they were reporting in. Jesus told them to come away to a deserted place and rest awhile … “they had no leisure even to eat.” ey tried to get away, however the people recognized Jesus, they needed what he had. Jesus’ compassion lead the way.

To engage the campers in sermon I asked them what the word compassion meant. Many hands went up, answers ranged from “kindness,” “friendly,” “caring,” to name a few. One enthusiastic young man with Down Syndrome was waving his hand with determination. With a big smile on this face he struggled to nd words, then pointed across Caribou Lake and said, “e Cross!” He is right – the cross is our ultimate illustration of compassion. Jesus, forgiveness, eternal life – God’s promises brought to us through the cross, the greatest example of compassion for all of us. “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace.” – PASTOR KALLAND

Retirement Coffee for Pastor GilmoreWEST Sun 9/27, After Worship Services MPLS Sun 10/4, After Worship Services

Dear Friends,I want to inform you that I have nally decided

to retire. I have enjoyed my 22-1/2 years of ministry at Mount Olivet. Including the ve years with Pastor Reuben Youngdahl, it makes 27 plus. It has been a privilege working with you and the entire sta. I am sure I will miss some of my work, but I will especially miss working on a regular basis with you, as we carry on God’s mission.

My plan is to retire on October 1, 2015. is will give Pastor Hogenson and the Pastoral Department time to nd a replacement.

Kay and I will continue to be active members of Mount Olivet and will keep in close contact with each of you. God’s richest blessing as you continue to serve our Lord and His people. – LOVE, HUGH GILMORE

The Impact of ONE!Consider ONE as a focus for this fall …ONE is the heart of faith.“ere is one body and one spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all who is above all and through all and in all.” – EPHESIANS 4:4-6

ONE is planning and providing for God first! Writing to his beloved congregation in Corinth, the Apostle Paul urges Jesus’ followers to prayerfully plan provision for God’s purposes rst: “On the rst day of every week each of you is to set aside whatever extra you earn” (II Corinthians 16: 2). Each year at this time God “opens the books” and invites us to thank and trust him by returning to God a growing portion of what God has rst entrusted to us: ourselves, our time, and our possessions: signs of God’s gracious love.

ONE pledge/plan for providing financial support. You will notice ONE place to make your pledge/plan for support for the coming year. Current Expense and Benevolence, the Conference & Retreat Center, and Community Concern pledges are now combined into ONE pledge, the General Fund – ONE place, ONE pledge. ONE plan of support. We are ONE in Christ’s mission through Mount Olivet. We are all one in mission; we all are one in call, our varied gifts united by Christ the Lord of all.A single great commission compels us from aboveTo plan and work together that all may know Christ’s love. – Evangelical Lutheran Worship # 567

Each ONE matters. God does not look to a particular group to provide support for his Church. God looks to each of us to motivate expanding ministry and mission support while moving each of us closer to God’s heart of love. e Lord never explicitly said, “Give me your money.” He did say, “My child, give me your heart.” You and I will never regret, and will always nd joy, when giving to God is Number ONE. – PASTOR CORNILS

UPCOMING ACTIVIT IES

AdultsComing Soon: The Year of Luke! Did you know that beginning in late November, most of our gospel

readings over the next year will come from the Gospel of Luke? e following year, we will be in the book of Matthew, the year after that, the Gospel of Mark, and the year after that, back to Luke. e Gospel of John appears in all three years, most signicantly during the year of Mark. is three-year rotation is part of the lectionary readings system we use in the Lutheran church.

Over the last few years, adult learning has made a point of oering fall classes that center on the upcoming “gospel for the year,” as we will again this year.

Taking time to ground yourself in the “gospel of the year” can make quite a dierence to how you hear and think about each week’s sermon. Time and again, we receive comments from people saying this very thing, such as Diane Lerberg, who comments: “Doing an in-depth study of the book of the Bible that is being used for the lectionary that year has helped me hear the gospel in a new and more meaningful way as it is being read each Sunday. It has focused my attention, helped me listen more carefully to God’s word, and reminded me of what we discussed in class.”

Give yourself the gift of preparing for a more enriched worship experience! Join fellow members and friends in one or both of the studies in Luke this fall (details below). See you there!

It’s September. e kids are back in school, stretching their minds. Meanwhile, we adults are a bit nostalgic as we remember the excitement of new pencils, new teachers, and new ideas expanding our horizons.

is year we invite you to head back to “school.” Get involved in learning at Mount Olivet. Try something new. Invite the Holy Spirit to expand your relationship with God.

One option is to join other Mount Olivet members who have discovered the ease of plugging into online learning whenever and wherever they want. Twenty men and women have served as guinea pigs for the past 18 months, exploring MObile Faith’s online learning resources and reecting on how it has enriched their faith. eir input has been invaluable in helping us develop the best online learning program for Mount Olivet.

Our aim is to provide learning opportunities that do more than impart information, but that stretch your faith in a new direction. Paula McQuillen has been active in several Bible studies over the years. She has noticed the questions embedded in the online classes “push me to take time to really think about where I have been in my faith journey and set goals as to where I hope to be in the future.” We hope MObile Faith encourages you to grow in the same intentional way.

Online learning at Mount Olivet is about more than just growing as an individual. It’s an invitation for God to work in our hearts and minds as we reect on our faith. As Kim Johnson puts it, “I feel God’s work being done as I work through the lessons.” May your learning be in close partnership with God’s Holy Spirit as well.

And Bible-based courses are more than just a series of lessons. ey are part of a chain reaction that we hope will bring you into closer relationship with God and into a life of living out God’s word. Jill Knight acknowledges that’s what happened to her. Having never done a Bible study before, she found that “MObile Faith opened my heart all year long – it made me more interested in volunteering at church, and it inspired me to attend midweek Lenten services and to join the Read rough the Bible initiative.” We pray that whatever you learn, God puts your learning into action through new and interesting opportunities.

If you are looking for renewed inspiration at the start of a new school year, we invite you to check out MObile Faith or any of our Adult Learning opportunities. Finding Hope: Thomas Merton

Every so often life throws us a curve and we nd ourselves wondering, Why? Tossed into turbulence, we even may begin to question who God is, how God works in our lives, and perhaps, whether God even cares. Sometimes this ends in the often uncomfortable realm of paradox. How does one grow through such times, much less nd hope?

In addition to God’s Word, one place to begin is with the writings of the American Trappist monk, omas Merton. Author of more than 60 books and hundreds of poems and articles, Merton is arguably one of the most inuential Christian thinkers in modern history. Robert Inchausti, editor and compiler of e Pocket omas Merton, describes him this way: omas Merton was the quintessential American outsider who dened himself in opposition to the world in both word and deed, and then discovered a way back into dialogue with it and compassion for it. He was the harbinger of a still yet to be realized contemplative counterculture – oering us a vision of an interior life free from rigid philosophical categories, narrow political agendas, and trite religious truisms.

Learn more about this intriguing man and his vast wisdom at the upcoming class, “omas Merton’s Message of Hope,” taught by Pastor STEPHEN CORNILS and DR. CURTIS PAULSEN, Professor Emeritus, Augsburg College. In addition to discovering how hope can emerge through the travails of life, you also just might discover an intimate union of God’s Spirit and your authentic, inmost self. ursdays, Oct 8, 15 & 22, 7-8:30pm, Gronseth Fellowship Hall, West Campus.

Youth Meet Your Hi-League Presidents Greetings Mount Olivet! I’m Reece DeVries, the new Mpls Hi-League President. It’s not often that I get to write about myself, so I was a little nervous when Gina DeNucci rst asked me. e writing seemed manageable. Selecting a photo would be the hard part. After going through hundreds of digital les I made a realization. I look like a fool in every single picture. No matter the occasion, whenever the shutter snaps and the ash goes o I always look like I’m about to sneeze. It was a dicult choice to make but I nally settled on a snapshot and sat down to write. I’m very excited about this coming year. In September, I will be a senior at Jeerson High School in Bloomington. My little brother, Riley, will be a sophomore. As I look forward to my last year of high school, I also look forward to meeting the incoming freshmen. Ninth grade is not only the rst year of high school, but also the rst year of Hi-League. It was only a short time ago that I was in their shoes. As a fourteen-year-old I soon came to the conclusion that church was much more fun than class. I hope all ninth-graders at Mount Olivet become involved. I truly believe that my involvement at Mount Olivet has changed my life. I sing in Cathedral Choir, help out with Kid’s Café, attend Hi-League on Sunday nights, and showcase my basketball talent with MO Hoops. All of these activities have given me opportunities to meet new people and make lifelong friends. I have nothing but positive experiences and would love to talk to anyone and answer any questions about becoming more involved. I can’t wait to see all of you, old and new, at Hi-League this year. – REECE DEVRIES

For the past three years, I have been so blessed to be involved in church through the many opportunities available to high school students at Mount Olivet. is coming year, I am lucky enough to serve as the Hi-League president at the West Campus. Hi-League has been a huge part of my life in high school and I am so excited to continue to be involved at church. My favorite part about going

to church is all the people I continue to meet. It’s fun to get to know people from all dierent schools and areas because I know I might not have met them without church. Also, all of the youth sta at Mount Olivet are incredible people who I have grown closer with every year. is year I am looking forward to seeing all these great people every week at events like Cathedral Choir, Tuesdays with Rolling Acres, and the Sunday night Hi-League events. All of these programs that I’ve been involved in at church have helped me grow as a person, in relationships, and in my faith. I am so blessed to belong to the wonderful community that is Mount Olivet, and I can’t wait to continue to be involved throughout my senior year as the West Hi-League president. – SARAH WEIBEL

Faith statementse Conrmation class of 2015 learned a lot over their two years. Here is what some of them have to say about their faith …I believe that God is not simply a gure preached in Sunday School, but a parent from above constantly watching over me. A parent that helps pick me up when I am down, a parent that doesn’t yell or scold, but silently teaches through the gifts of others. As a parent, God never gives up on me and is always watching over me. I know that God taught me to be good, and forgives me when I’m not. I know and believe that God is always with me, but it’s up to me to become a person with my soul pointed towards God, and nothing can change my soul. I further believe God will be there to guide me, no matter what, and he will be there for me all my life. – KAIJA JOHNSON

My faith is my salvation. Knowing that God sacriced his only Son for our sins, reassures me every day that the Holy Trinity is always with me. Every day I try to live a life that makes Jesus’ death not in vain. e thought of all my sins being forgiven lifts lots of stress and pressure o my shoulders and helps me focus on the greater things in life. – JACK RAPINI

“Faith” is a small word, but I never quite understood it before I started Conrmation. To me, faith is believing in something bigger than myself, always knowing that God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are surrounding me in every moment. Faith is living in the moment with purpose and God in mind. Faith is the feeling that I get when I’m holding hands and praying with my Conrmation group on Wednesdays. Faith is what helps me get through a rough day, knowing that God is alongside me. Faith is opening my Bible and hearing God’s Word through the scripture. Faith is laughing and sharing stories with my small group. It’s a small word with a big meaning, but I think these two years have really helped me to strengthen my relationship with God, and I’m glad to know that through faith he will always be with me. – ANNA MONARSKI

I believe in God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. ey are the most important part of my life. God’s love is something I will always have the rest of my life and the one thing that will never leave me. Conrmation has taught me to be a better person and to keep my faith in God through good and bad. – BEN ELNESS

God’s PlansEnjoy serving the Lord and he will give you what you want. – PSALM 37:4

“What do you love to do? ... Some long to feed the poor. Others relish teaching … Each of us has been made to serve God in a unique way. …e longings of your heart, then, are not incidental; they are critical messages. e desires of your heart are not to be ignored; they are to be consulted.” – Max Lucado

When asked to take a Children & Family Ministry position at church, I couldn’t believe the opportunity. I rejected the position at rst simply stating, “It wasn’t the right time.” With four kids of my own – two ’tweens and two toddlers – I thought to myself, “ere’s no way.” However, my husband encouraged me to go for it. He was telling me, without telling me, that I couldn’t ignore this critical message.

After all, working with kids has been my life’s desire. I feel honored to be in ministry here at Mount Olivet working in what I would consider my true vocation. Working with you and your families this past summer has been a blast! Getting to know the children and families that we serve – your stories, each one of them an intricate thread in the tapestry of Mount Olivet. We are a church unlike any other, built on a foundation that is set early within the hearts and minds of our children. I look forward to a year lled with exciting opportunities and new adventures. Keep coming and keep going God’s way. – HEATHER MELSNESS, CHILDREN & FAMILY MINISTRY TEAM

Why Cherub Choir?Mount Olivet is known for,

among other wonderful aspects, its exceptional music program. Many of our high school and adult singers have made their way through the ranks of the graded choir program here. But is there more to having a young child in Cherub Choir besides looking cute in the white robes with the red bows?

Plenty more! Many studies have shown the benets of children participating in the joy of listening to and making music, both individually and in a group setting. In connecting children with structured musical experiences before age ve, we are setting the stage for all sorts of development in those precious little brains. Music is a language, and language is best learned by experiencing it in many dierent ways. Children naturally move to music and develop their own ways of expression.

Mount Olivet’s Cherub Choir and Musikgarten classes provide foundational spiritual concepts and Bible stories woven throughout the musical learning. Young children (and all of us!) can easily memorize scripture verses and biblical truths when they are set to music. Children of preschool age begin to make connections as they hear and sing about who they are as a child of God and what it means to follow Jesus. I know my involvement in children’s choir at my small town church was foundational for my faith and continued desire to participate in worship.

ere are many activities you can involve your child in, and many have great benets. But experiencing music in a sacred context can have lifelong (and eternal!) rewards. Check out http://mtolivet.org/music/choirs for information and to register for any of Mount Olivet’s choir oerings.
