Rally Argentina April 26 - 29, 2018

Welcome to Rally Argentina, round five of the 2018 FIA World Rally Championship and an event where the Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team has had much to celebrate in the past two years. It was in Argentina in 2016 that Hayden took his maiden WRC victory and Thierry followed that up with a breakthrough win last season.

We head to South America still in the lead of the manufacturers’ championship despite a tough weekend on Tour de Corse. On a positive note, we secured our fourth podium finish of the season with Thierry in third place and, with Dani one spot behind, scored some important championship points. Andreas also battled to seventh place to ensure that all our crews were in the top 10.

We were not able to match the pace of some of our competitors on Tour de Corse, but throughout the event the team and crews kept giving their maximum effort and this is all we can ask for. The competition is still incredibly close in the WRC – as I think it will be all year – but we can’t afford to have difficult weekends like we did in Corsica too often, so we must regroup and work harder to improve our performance on tarmac before the next event on this surface – Rallye Deutschland in August.

There are lots of lessons to be learned from Tour de Corse but we head to Argentina with a renewed sense of purpose given our strong record on this event. The gravel stages, some of which are famously run at high altitude, are suited to our Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC and Andreas and Dani have also made the podium in the past.

So, there is every reason to hope for another strong team result on Rally Argentina to further boost our title ambitions.

Michel Nandan Team Principal, Hyundai Motorsport

Rally Argentina April 26 - 29, 2018

You didn’t contest Rally Argentina last year but finished third in 2016 – what do you think you can achieve this time round?“Well, I did the recce [last season], so that’s better than nothing. For sure, it can be more difficult for me, but a lot of the stages are running in the opposite direction this time – like El Condor and Mina Clavero – so that should be pretty new to everyone. The stages are covered in a sandy type of gravel, which makes the grip quite high, and my driving style is suited to that. I’m really looking forward to this rally because it’s one of my favourites and I have good memories of the event.”

What do you think are your biggest challenges on the rally?“The biggest challenge in Argentina is to go through all the stages without hitting problems with your car because it’s very, very rough. There are a lot of stones being pulled out onto the surface the second time through [the tests]. It’s about knowing what your car can take, where can you cut corners and if you have a good understanding of that you can go very fast, but you have to watch out…”

What are the strengths of the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC on gravel?“My first impression of the car on gravel is that it’s a very stable car – and when the stages are rutted our i20 Coupe WRC is still really stable compared to some others. For Argentina, it’s a winning car. You saw Thierry Neuville victorious last year by a small margin, but it was enough. That’s a good feeling to know we will get there with a competitive car.”

Who do you think will be your main competition in Argentina?“We’ll see with the weather and how that affects things. It depends on your road position as well. The level of competition is high in the WRC. Before it was just a few names trying for victory, but now whoever has a good [road] position can win. There are probably six or seven drivers – it’s a really open field.”

Providing all goes well, will you allow yourself one of Argentina’s famous steaks and a glass of Malbec when the rally is over?“Malbec, yes! Every year we have to have a glass of Malbec wine and some classic Argentinian cheese. First the cheese, then we have a steak and some wine – starter, main course and dessert!”

Rally Argentina April 26 - 29, 2018

● The Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team heads to Rally Argentina still in the lead of the WRC manufacturers’ championship despite a trying weekend on Tour de Corse, where it struggled to match the pace of some of its competitors. But there was reason to be cheerful when Thierry Neuville finished third to record the team’s fourth individual podium result of the season. Dani Sordo scored more useful manufacturer points in fourth place and Andreas Mikkelsen battled to seventh as he builds on his tarmac experience in the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC.

● Neuville’s podium result – his second of the season – means he retains the same position in the drivers’ championship, while Mikkelsen is just two spots behind. Sordo’s fourth-place finish in Corsica and the 12 points he bagged has lifted him to eighth in the drivers’ table.

● Hyundai Motorsport arrives at Rally Argentina fully prepared for the challenges of the South American event having undertaken three days of testing – one day per crew – in the area of Amarante in Portugal the week after Tour de Corse.

● Veteran touring car star Gabriele Tarquini made history earlier this month by becoming the first race winner in the all-new FIA World Touring Car Cup. The Italian was driving a new Hyundai i30 N TCR run by the BRC Racing Team. He beat the YMR-run i30 of polesitter Thed Björk, the 2017 WTCC champion, in part one of the Race of Morocco, held around the streets of Marrakech. Tarquini then won the third of three races ahead of YMR team-mates Yvan Muller and Björk to take an early lead in the revamped series.

● Five-times CODASUR South American Rally Champion and current series leader Gustavo Saba will enter Rally Argentina in a Hyundai i20 R5. Paraguayan Saba, 38, a dominant force in South American rallying, has also won his national championship six times and was fourth in WRC2 on last year’s Rally Argentina in a Škoda Fabia R5.

HYUNDAI IN NUMBERS1967: Company founded in Korea and has gone on to establish sales networks in 190 countries and employs over 110,000 people.

10,000: Of those global employees some 10,000 people work at Hyundai’s R&D base in the Korean city of Namyang.

4: Across 13 rounds of the 2017 WRC, Hyundai crews scored four victories on Tour de Corse, Rally Argentina, Rally Poland and Rally Australia. Poland was especially successful as the team celebrated a one-two finish, with Thierry Neuville heading home Hayden Paddon.

12: In total, Hyundai Motorsport drivers took 12 individual podium finishes in 2017 and four double podiums in Corsica, Portugal, Poland and Australia.

91: Hyundai crews amassed 91 stage wins in the 2017 season as well as 56 Power Stage points.

3: As its name suggests, the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC comes with three doors compared to the five in its predecessor. But while there are two doors less, the new-for-2017 challenger has a power output of 380hp thanks to the introduction of a larger turbo restrictor – up from 33mm to 36mm.

10: The Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC is wider but lighter – it has shed 10kg compared to the New Generation i20 WRC.

ABOUT N● First announced in 2015, the N line-up showcases Hyundai’s engineering

expertise, offering high-performance models that are equally at home on the road, or out on a race circuit.

● N was born in Namyang, Korea in Hyundai’s global R&D centre and honed at the famous Nürburgring circuit, home to the Hyundai Test Centre. The close working relationship between the engineers in Korea and Germany created the foundations for the development of the line-up. The N logo also symbolises a chicane, where the models carrying the badge are most at home.

● N is Hyundai’s answer to emerging customer preferences, calling for uncompromising innovation and technology-driven performance. Designed to deliver the perfect combination of feedback, precision and predictable response, the models of the N line-up are made for driving enthusiasts, bringing a unique character to the road and further enhancing the image of the Hyundai brand.

● Inspired by Hyundai Motorsport competing at the highest possible level, the creation of N has drawn on our experience of testing the i30 N TCR, and racing on the tarmac, gravel and snow of the World Rally Championship. From the knowledge taken from the stages and the circuit Hyundai’s engineers were able to identify further handling and performance refinements during the development of the N line-up. With all this experience, N delivers exhilarating driving pleasure for everyone – pure emotions.

● The i30 N was the first road-going model to be launched from the N line-up in July 2017. The car is based on the New Generation i30. However, it was developed from the ground up in order to deliver maximum driving pleasure for everyone. Under the theme ‘Fun to Drive’, the i30 N has been developed on the basis of three cornerstones: Corner Rascal, Everyday Sports Car and Race Track Capability. It offers segment-leading high-performance elements that can be selected individually by the driver in order to tailor the car for any scenario, from a comfortable daily commute to a day at the track.

● Like the i30 N TCR the road-going i30 N is powered by a two-litre, turbocharged engine. The i30 N develops up to 275 horsepower, with a maximum torque of 353 Nm, delivered through a six-speed gearbox to the front wheels. The road-going car can reach a maximum speed of 250km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just over six seconds.

A relative latecomer to co-driving, Jæger has enjoyed a rapid rise to the WRC ranks having started his career in 2014 in his native Norway alongside Bernt Kollevold. He made his world championship debut that year with Ole Christian Veiby in Spain before going on to contest a mix of mainly Junior WRC and European championship events the following season, scoring five podiums including a win in the former. Jæger’s partnership with long-time friend Mikkelsen began in fine style in 2016 when they were second on Rallye Monte-Carlo, one of six podium visits that included two victories.RALLY ARGENTINA RECORD: Starts: 1, 2017 result: - , Best result: 3

Mikkelsen joined Hyundai Motorsport for three late-season events in 2017, passing his audition with flying colours by earning a long-term deal with the team. Having initially flown in skiing, he switched to rallying when injury curtailed his promising career on the slopes. Relocating to the UK for 2006, he was a winner shortly after getting his driving licence following his 17th birthday. Fifth on the 2008 Rally Sweden then made him the youngest driver to score a WRC point. Mikkelsen won back-to-back Intercontinental Rally Challenge titles in 2011-12. Having joined Volkswagen’s WRC line-up, he took his maiden win on the 2015 Rally de España, and won in Poland and Australia in 2016. Mikkelsen also scored his first podium finish for Hyundai with third on this year’s Rally Sweden.RALLY ARGENTINA RECORD: Starts: 5, 2017 result: - , Best result: 3

HYUNDAI HEROESThierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul

An experienced WRC campaigner, Gilsoul was awarded the prestigious WRC Co-driver of the Year accolade in 2016 after finishing second in that year’s championship alongside Neuville. They joined forces in the spring of 2011 and the partnership quickly blossomed with victory on the Tour de Corse, then a round of the IRC, in only their second event together. Moving to Hyundai Motorsport for 2014, Gilsoul helped to secure the team’s first victory on Rallye Deutschland that season, and Thierry is quick to praise his co-driver’s precision and matching skillsets in the cockpit. Gilsoul’s four wins with Neuville in 2017 was more than that scored by any other co-driver, confirming this Belgian’s crew status as one of the most formidable in world rallying.

Neuville starts 2018 as a firm title contender for Hyundai Motorsport - especially following his Rally Sweden victory - having finished a close second in 2017. His successes last year included four victories – the most of any driver – and he finished with a win in Australia. Having enjoyed huge success at junior level before stepping up to the WRC in 2009, the Belgian finished second in the 2013 standings after a highly competitive season. Those performances caught the eye of Hyundai’s fledgling WRC team and he was signed for its debut campaign. Alongside co-driver Nicolas Gilsoul, Neuville scored the team’s debut podium in Mexico 2014 and led a memorable one-two (ahead of Dani Sordo) on Rallye Deutschland – the squad’s maiden victory. Although German is Neuville’s first language, French is used on events as the shorter words make communication more efficient.

The vastly experienced del Barrio has co-driven for some of the biggest names in Spanish rallying. His career began in 1987 and he made his WRC debut in 1994 with Jesus Puras. They enjoyed tremendous success in their native Spain, winning three national titles. In 2004, del Barrio joined forces with Dani Sordo for an initial four-event campaign with the young Spaniard looking for an experienced co-driver. The pairing would reunite in 2011 for a longer WRC programme, which included three podiums and victory on the 2013 Rallye Deutschland. The crew will be chasing more success in 2018 with Hyundai Motorsport.

Hugely consistent and experienced, Sordo has amassed a legion of fans since arriving in world rallying 15 years ago. This asphalt specialist’s career began at the age of 12 in motocross and karting, but he also tried hillclimbing before moving to rallying and winning the Junior world crown in 2005. The Spaniard, who is reunited with former co-driver Carlos Del Barrio for 2018, scored his maiden WRC victory in Germany in 2013 and was signed by Hyundai Motorsport later that year. Since then he has been an integral part of the team. Sordo helped in Hyundai’s milestone one-two result on Rallye Deutschland in 2014 and has since secured many more podiums. Scoring two top-three finishes in 2017 only added to his already impressive list of achievements and he was second on Rally Mexico in March – Hyundai’s best ever result on that event. HYUNDAI IS HERE...

● Hyundai products have been imported into Argentina for 25 years through its national distributor, Hyundai Motor Argentina S.A.

● During this period, more than 65,000 Hyundai vehicles have been sold in the country with the Hyundai Tucson (pictured) undoubtedly the best seller. Indeed, sales of the Tucson have exceeded 12,000 units, followed by the Santa Fe.

● The Tucson and Santa Fe SUVs have provided Hyundai with a solid platform for growth in Argentina, while the company also has one of the best market shares in sportscar sales thanks to the Genesis Coupé. In just three years, more than 1,200 units have been sold, such is the vehicle’s popularity.

● But the Hyundai line-up in Argentina goes much further with nine models – including commercial vehicles such as the HD78, HD65 and H100 – on sale. And in the next few months the range will grow with the new Veloster, Accent and Santa Fe earmarked for upcoming launches.

● Hyundai is currently focusing its efforts on the SUV line-up in Argentina. Aligned with the ‘#SUV4ALL’ concept, Hyundai offers the most extensive SUV line-up to satisfy its customers. Creta, Tucson, Santa Fe and Grand Santa Fe are very important players in the Argentinian market and the Tucson is now the sales leader in the segment.

ARGENTINA MEANS● Hyundai Motorsport can expect good things from Rally Argentina, where

Hayden Paddon and Thierry Neuville have both tasted victory in the past two years. But although he isn’t contesting the event in 2018, Sébastien Loeb has racked up a record eight wins.

● Originally known as Rally Codasur, Rally Argentina has been a WRC regular since 1980 and based in the Córdoba region since ‘84. South Americans are passionate about their rallying, with more than a million spectators normally attending the event – and some camping out days in advance for a good viewing spot.

● The rally is renowned for its mix of gravel stages, including fast and sandy roads in the Santa Rosa de Calamuchita valley, and narrow rocky tracks at high altitude in the Traslasierra mountains. The higher stages are famed for their moonlike landscape, with El Condor providing an opportunity to spot the bird it is named after.

● Deep ruts often form on the soft gravel roads to make the second pass of a stage tricky, with the cars’ ride heights raised as a result. The valley stages feature large watersplashes where the route crosses rivers, offering a great spectacle.

● The rally is once again based in Villa Carlos Paz, 700km north-west of Buenos Aires and close to Córdoba city, where the action started in 2017. This time, however, the former will host the opening stage – a superspecial test based downtown on Thursday evening.

● On Friday, the crews will once again head to the Santa Rosa de Calamuchita valley for two loops of three tests, interspersed by a superspecial at Fernet Branca. On Saturday, the rally heads west to the Punilla Valley for two more loops of three stages, again with a Fernet Branca stop halfway. The Tanti – Mataderos test was used as a liaison section last year but is now a 13,92km stage, while Los Gigantes – Cuchilla Nevada will be covered live on television.

● On Sunday, the destination is the Traslasierra mountains, for two loops of El Condor – covered live on TV and counting as the final Power Stage – as well as a visit to Giulio Cesare. Both tests will be run uphill this year to a height of more than 2,100 metres and the autumn weather could also bring fog and ice.
