    Ward Counci l lors aredelighted at the news that inthe first year of offering A

    level examinations for theirpupils, Ashton-on-MerseySchool has announced thatevery child who applied for aUniversity place has beensuccessful. Chairman ofGovernors Councillor BrianRigby stated that theser e s u l t s c o n f i r m t h a tthe schools determination toensure success for pupils hasbeen carried on from themain school into the new 6th

    form. He added This is a fantastic achievement. The 100%success rate is a credit to the students, Head Teacher, staffand the governing body.Demand for places at the state of the art Sixth formfor September 2011 is expected to be high.The Sixth form at Ashton-on-Mersey School was opened 18months ago by the Duke of Gloucester and has brought newopportunities for local pupils and complements the excellenteducation facilities in the area.This year also saw pupils at Ashton-on-Mersey School gainrecord GCSE results.

    A Week as a Councillorby Councillor John Lamb

    On Monday I attend a meeting at Trafford Town Hall whenproposals for budget reductions next year are discussed. Myrole is to provide challenge to what is being proposed beforefinal approval by the Council. During Monday evening Ireceive a call from a constituent about the condition of thehouse he is renting and so on Tuesday morning I contactTrafford Housing Trust about the call and ask for somebackground information. Tuesday afternoon is a visit to therecently opened state of the art Cystic Fibrosis unit at theUniversity Hospital of South Manchester where I am a

    Governor. Later that day I am at a meeting of the TraffordHousing Trust where I am a Board Member. On WednesdayI receive information from the Housing Trust concerning myconstituents housing problem and relay this to theconstituent. I receive an email from local residentsconcerning car parking congestion on Barkers Lane which isan on-going issue exacerbated by the re-occupation of SalePoint. I put calls in to Bruntwood and Trafford Council withsuggestions about the actions that could be taken to easethis problem. On Wednesday evening I attend a meeting ofthe Governing body of Park Road Primary school where I ama Governor. Thursday is a day when I am able to chase upthe on-going issue of planning proposals for the former

    Pictor School site on Harboro Road. I make enquiries aboutwhen the application will come before the PlanningCommittee as I will be expected to represent views and Ineed to organise a residents meeting to hear what the viewsof local people are. On Friday I attend a sub Committee ofthe Sale Grammar School governing body where I am aGovernor. Saturday morning is my turn to run our regularadvice bureaux. Sunday, I decide on a day off!

    Boost for Ashton ParkAll three Ashton upon Mersey Councillors John Lamb, BrianRigby and Michael Whetton have welcomed the decision toprovide the money so that play facilities for children can goahead for Ashton Park. The Council has issued a pressrelease which said it was delighted that 370,963 has beenapproved by Government under the Playbuilder Scheme.This news means that many children and young people inthe local area can now look forward to exciting play facilities.This funding will allow completion of five projects, providingmany young people with significantly improved, challenging,exciting play opportunities in their local neighbourhoods.We all recognise the role play has in child development.When complete the sites will give them a chance to climb,relax and play with friends in attractive, natural andchallenging environments. The five projects are AshtonPark, Flixton Park, Walton Park, Lostock Park andHornbeam Park.

    Mighty Oak Tribute to Winston ChurchillAn oak tree has been planted inthe grounds of Flixton House,Urmston in commemoration ofthe life of Winston S Churchillthe grandson of Sir WinstonChurchill, this countrys war timeleader. Winston Churchill wasthe Member of Parliament forStretford and Urmston from1970 and then representedDavyhulme (Urmston and SaleWest which included AshtonUpon Mersey) from 1983 until

    his retirement from active politics in 1997. Winston Churchilldied earlier this year from prostate cancer at the age of 69.The tree planting ceremony was attended by members ofthe Churchill family, Mrs Minnie Churchill and her children,Randolph, Jennie, Marina and Jack. On 10th October 2010,the date of the planting, Winston would have celebrated his70th birthday. He was born just weeks after the Battle ofBritain in 1940.

    Funds for Mayoral CharitiesOver 1600 was raised for the Mayor of Traffords charitiesfrom an event held at the Gonbay Cantonese restaurant inAltrincham. Pictor School and Trafford General HospitalsProstate Cancer Unit are the Mayors chosen causes.The event was conceived by Ashton councillors, JohnLamb, Brian Rigby and Mike Whetton to boost the funds forthe two good causes. They approached the Gonbay,

    seeking exclusive use of the 100 seater restaurant for onenight. A special banquet menu was created which helpedthe evening become a sell out. The Mayor and Mayoress,Cllr Ken Weston and Mrs Marilyn Lucas attended and were joined by many councillors from both major parties as wellas members of the public from all over Trafford. With ahuge raffle of donated prizes and the auction of a specialbottle of cognac, the charities will share 1655.
