GENERAL INFORMATION DESCRIPTION: The RainwaterTechnoJogy Rainwater System Controller manages all of the functions required in a typical residential or commercial rainwater collection system:

WATER LEVEL MONITORING: The Rainwater System Controller continuously measures and displays the water level in the rainwater tank, both as a numeric percentage and as a bar-graph.

BACKUP: The Rainwater System Controller activates a secondary water source when there is insufficient rainwater to meet demand. Three different backup schemes are supported: backup water can be delivered directly to the rainwater storage tank, backup water can be drawn from a small secondary tank that is refilled with a float valve, or backup water can be directly connected under pressure using a 3-way valve and a backflow preventer. When the backup system is activated, a backup indicator is lit on the control panel.

TRANSFER: The Rainwater System Controller activates a pump or valve to transfer water from the rainwater tank when the tank is full, providing an alternative to a simple gravity overflow system. This function can be used to pump water to a secondary storage site, or to disperse excess water to a remote location. Manual transfer is also supported.

RINSE: The Rainwater System Controller periodically rinses rainwater filters at intervals determined by the volume of water filtered, thereby reducing filter maintenance. This function is only applicable for filters that have provision for a rinse nozzle.

DRAIN: The Rainwater System Controller automates "first-flush" systems that coilect the initial runoff from a roof in a small holding tank This function will operate a drain valve or pump relay to evacuate the first-flush tank a pre-set number of days after the last rainfall. When rainwater is stored solely for runoff control, this function can be used to dump the primary rainwater tank several days after the last rainfall.

SERVICE: The Rainwater System Controller warns of the need for routine maintenance of filters, ultraviolet sterilizers, or other system components by illuminating a service indicator and operating a control relay after a pre-set time interval. System malfunctions also activate the service indicator and relay. For critical installations, the relay can be used to control an alarm or autodialer.

COMPONENTS: The Rainwater System Controller consists of a tank-mounted sensor system and a sophisticated microprocessor­based control station. The sensor control box can be located up to 150 feet from the control station and the two components are connected with standard underground irrigation cable. The entire system is powered by a low-voltage transformer which permits safe and easy installation without an electrician.

The attractive, splash-resistant control station can be installed in a living space, office, outbuilding, or mechanical room. A backlit LCD display screen eliminates the need for supplemental lighting at night and clearly displays the water level and the status of all system functions. With a few minutes practice, the intuitive programming system makes it easy to view the status of any system function or modify any setting in English, French, or Spanish without consulting a manual.

The sensor system has been engineered to meet the demands of rainwater storage applications where particulates and turbulence often make other types of level measuring devices unreliable. The standard sensor is designed for tanks up to 10ft tall (9 ft water level), but a longer version is available for tanks up to 20 ft (19 ft water level).

INSTALLATION The sensor control box should be mounted 4" to 6" above the ovelilow level of the water storage tank. Position the control box at this height so that the side with one wire connector faces up and the side with two wire connectors faces down, and drill pilot holes for the mounting screws. Then screw the box in place by hand to avoid damage to the case or mounting feet. NOTE: The sensor wires must be spaced at least 12" from access ports and tank walls made of steel or reinforced concrete.

Unscrew the cover from the sensor control box. With the stainless steel probe hanging approximately 1/2" above the bottom of the tank, cut the red and white sensor wires at the height of the two outer (upper) terminals. Strip about 1/4" of insulation from the wires, and attach the wires to the terminals. The sensor wires should be peliectly straight when they are drawn taught by the weight of the stainless steel probe: work out any kinks or bends that might have been created. Then attach the three plastic spacers uniformly separated as shown.

Run a length of two-conductor #18 underground irrigation cable from the sensor control box to the point where the control station will be mounted. Remove the jacket from the end of the cable near the sensor control box, strip about 1/4" of insulation from the wires, and attach the wires to the two inner (lower) terminals. Replace the cover, carefully starting the screws so they don't strip the threads, and securely tighten the screws so that the cover gasket is fully compressed. Then tighten the nuts on the cable clamps so all wire entries are sealed watertight.

The low-voltage transformer can plug into any unused receptacle within the building where the control station will be mounted. Determine the most suitable location and run a three-conductor #18 cable to the location where the control station will be mounted, but don't plug in the transformer yet!

Run low-voltage wires to the location where the control station will be mounted from any electric valves or relays to be used for the backup, transfer, rinse, and drain functions. If these are to be buried underground, #18 irrigation wire should be used. All relays and valves must be 24VAC and their combined power consumption must not exceed 30 watts.

Mount the sensor control box 4" to 6" above the overflow level of the tank. Cut the sensor wires so that the sensor is

Position the control station at the desired position and make a mark on the wall at the top center of the case. Set the control station aside, make a second mark 1-1/8" below the first mark, drill a pilot hole at the mark, and attach a screw, leaving the head protruding approximately 3/16". Remove the bottom cover plate to expose the terminal compartment and hang the control station on the screw. Level the box and mark screw centers through the slots at the bottom of the screw pockets located at the lower left and lower right corners. If the cables will be hidden inside or behind the wall, insert a nail through the rubber grommets to mark the wall for cable holes. Remove the control station and drill holes for the cables and pilot holes for the screws. Pass the cables through the holes in the wall and through the grommets, re-hang the control station, and attach the two bottom screws.

Remove the jacket from the ends of the cables, strip about 1/4" of insulation from the wires, and insert each wire into the appropriate terminals as shown in the illustration and printed inside the terminal box cover (C=common, G=ground, T=transfer, P=power, B=backup, R=rinse, D=drain, S=service, unmarked=sensor). Tighten the terminal screws using the small screwdriver supplied.

Attach the power cable to the transformer and plug in the transformer. The power light and the display screen on the control station should both be lit. If not, check to see that the green power indicator on the transformer is lit. If the transformer power indicator is not lit, check for power to the receptacle. If the transformer power indicator is lit, check the power cable connections on the transformer and inside the control station. If these are secure, try changing the fuse on the main circuit board which is accessed by removing the four screws at the corners of the front panel. If the power indicator is still not lit, disconnect the power cable and check for continuity in the wires.

IMPORTANT SAFETY WARNING: Exercise appropriate safety precautions when mounting Sensor Control Box inside tanks that are filled with water. Replace fuse only with a T50ma. We suggest leaving the spare fuse provided inside the terminal compartment of the display box where it can be easily found if it is ever needed.

INTRODUCTION TO THE PROGRAM MODE: When power is first connected, the green Power indicator will light and the display will identify the system software version. After a few seconds the system will enter the user mode where the screen would normally display the water level in the rainwater tank. Since the tank depth has not yet been entered, the water level cannot be determined so the display will show the error message "depth =0" and the red Service indicator will light. The tank depth and all other settings are entered in the program mode which is activated by depressing the Program button for five seconds. After the desired settings are entered, momentarily pressing the Program button again will return to the user mode. The system will also return to the user mode if no buttons are pressed for 30 seconds. The exercise below will introduce all the system settings available in the program mode.

When power is first connected to the control station, the green power Indicator lights, the system runs an initialization procedure during which the display shows the system software version installed.

After initialization is complete, the red service indicator lights and the display shows an error message indicating that the tank depth has not yet been set.

To enter the program mode, press and hold the Program button for five seconds to display the first program setting, LANGUAGE. The default is "English", but all displayed text can also be viewed in French or Spanish.

Settings in the program mode are accessed with the scroll-down button T and scroll-up button A. Press T to display the second setting, UNITS. The default is "inches", but depth can also be measured in centimeters.

Scroll down to display the third setting, DEPTH. The default is "0 inches" which means the depth has not been set. The system can measure depths to 240 inches, or twenty feet of water.

Scroll down to display the fourth setting, BACKUP ON. The default is "0%" which means the backup function is deactivated, but this can be reset to any water level.

Scroll down to display the fifth setting, BACKUP OFF. The default is "10%", but this can be reset to any water level.

Scroll down to display the sixth setting, BACKUP TYPE The default is "rainwater tank" which means backup water is supplied directly into the rainwater storage tank. Other backup options are a secondary "float tank" or a "direct" connection.

Scroll down to display the seventh setting, BACKUP MODE. The default is "24v on" which means the backup valve is energized when rainwater is low, but this can be changed so that the backup valve is de-energized when rainwater is low.

Scroll down to display the eighth setting, TRANSFER ON. The default is "101 %" which means the transfer function is deactivated, but this can be reset to any water level.

Scroll down to display the ninth setting, TRANSFER OFF. The default is "90%", but this can be reset to any water level.

Scroll down to display the tenth setting, TRANSFER LIMIT The default IS "0%" which means the manual transfer function is deactivated, but this can be reset to allow any amount of manual transfer.

Scroll down to display the eleventh setting, RINSE INCREMENT The default is "0%" which means the rinse function is deactivated, but this can be reset to any incremental rise in water level.

Scroll down to display the twelfth setting, RINSE TIME. The default is"O seconds" which means the rinse function is deactivated, but this can be reset to any rinse time up to 60 seconds.

Scroll down to display the thirteenth setting, DRAIN DELAY. The default is "0 days" which means the drain function is deactivated, but this can be reset to any period up to 60 days.

Scroll down to display the fourteenth setting, DRAIN TIME. The default is "0 seconds" which means the drain function is deactivated, but this can be reset to any time up to 999 minutes.

Scroll down to display the fifteenth and last setting, SERVICE CYCLE. The default is "0 days" which means the service reminder function is deactivated, but this can be reset to any period up to 180 days.

The settings in the program mode form a continuous loop, so pressing the scroll down button once more will return to the first setting, LANGUAGE. As an alternative, the scroll up button could be pressed fourteen times.

Press the program button to return to the user mode, or wait 30 seconds and it will return automatically. Since the depth has still not been set, the red service indicator will light and the display will show the original error message.

ACTIVATING THE WATER LEVEL MONITORING FUNCTION: At the core of all the Rainwater System Controller functions is its ability to accurately monitor the water level in the rainwater storage tank. The following procedure is used to activate this function.

Press and hold the Program button for five seconds to display the first program mode setting LANGUAGE where the default is "English". The procedure for changing languages will be covered later, so for now continue to the next step.

Scroll down to display the second setting, UNITS. The procedure for changing units will be covered later, so for now continue to the next step.

Scroll down to display the third setting, DEPTH. Since the language is "English" and the units are "inches", the display reads "0 inches"

Press the Modify button. The current value "0 inches" will begin to blink, indicating the system is ready to accept changes.

Press the scroll-up button to set the tank depth, in this case 60 inches. Each button push increases the depth by one; if the button is held down, the numbers will advance automatically. Use the scroll-down buttons if needed.

When the desired value is displayed, press the Modify buttoll again. The display will stop blinking, indicating that the depth of 60 inches has beell saved.

To set other system functions now, press the scroll-down or scroll-up buttons as needed to display the setting to be modified. For example, the next setting accessed by the scroll-down button is the BACKUP ON level.

Or press the Program button to exit the program mode and return to the user mode. The WATER LEVEL display will appear and the system will now function strictly as a level indicator.

All system programming is done similarly: press and hold Program to enter the program mode, press T or ... to scroll to the setting to be changed, press Modify so the current value starts blinking, press T or'" to increase or decrease the value, and press Modify again to save the value. Then scroll to the next setting to be changed, or press Program to return to the user mode.

ACTIVATING THE BACKUP FUNCTION: The water level monitoring function can be used to control the backup function which automatically engages a backup water system when the rainwater tank is empty. The following procedure is used to change the four settings that control the backup function:

To change to another type of backup, press the Modify button and "rainwater tank" will begin to blink, indicating the system is ready to accept changes.

Scroll down to display the next option available, "float tank". A float tank is typically a small tank with a float valve that refills the tank with municipal or well water as water is drawn from the tank, preventing cross-contamination.

Scroll down to display the next option available, "direct". With direct backUp, a pressurized rainwater supply and a pressurized municipal supply (or private well) with a backflow preventer merge through a 24vac 3-way valve.

Scroll down to display the next setting TRANSFER LIMIT. This is the maximum amount that can be manually transferred in the user mode. Avoid high settings that could permit the tank to be accidentally emptied.

To change the value, press the Modify button and "0 %" will begin to blink, indicating the system is ready to accept changes.

Scroll up to set the maximum percent of water in the tank that can be manually transferred.

Press the Modify button again. The display will stop blinking, indicating that the TRANSFER LIMIT of "5 %" has been saved.

Press the Program button to return to the user mode. Operation of the TRANSFER system can now be monitored and controlled from the user mode (see instructions for the user mode).

Press the Modify button again. The display will stop blinking, indicating that the RINSE TIME of"30 seconds" has been saved.

Press the Program button to return to the user mode. Operation of the RINSE system can now be monitored and controlled from the user mode (see instructions for the user mode).

SETTING THE LANGUAGE AND MEASUREMENT UNITS: All text in both the user and program modes can be displayed in French, or Spanish instead of the default English language. For countries using the metric system, tank depth can be set in centimeters instead of the default measurement in inches. The following procedure is used to change these settings.

Program NIVEL DEAGUA 48%

Enter the program mode by pressing and holding the Program button for five seconds. The first program setting, LANGUAGE appears.

To change the language, press the Modify button. "English" w'tll begin to blink,_ indicating the system is ready to accept changes.

Scroll down to display "French".

Scroll down to display "Spanish".

Press the Modify button. The text will change to the Spanish language.

Scroll down to display UNIDADES which shows the default "pulgadas". These are Spanish for UNITS and "inches".

Press the Modify button. "pulgadas" will begin to blink indicating the system is ready to accept changes.

Scroll down to display "centimetros" which is Spanish for "centimeters".

Press the Modify button. "centimetros" will stop blinking, indicating that the units selection has been saved.

To see the effect of these changes on the tank depth setting, scroll down to the next setting which has been DEPTH and "inches".

Press the Program button to return to the user mode which is now In Spanish.

INTRODUCTION TO THE USER MODE: After the system is setup in the program mode, all system functions are monitored and controlled from the user mode. The default display in the user mode is WATER LEVEL. In addition, any functions that are activated in the program mode will appear in the user mode. If all functions are activated, the user mode will function as follows.

The default display is WATER LEVEL. When any other display is visible in either the user mode, the system will automatically revert to this display if no buttons are pressed for 30 seconds.

Scroll down to display the current status of the BACKU P function. If this function has not been activated in the program mode, this display will not appear.

Scroll down to display the current status of the TRANSFER function. If this function . has not been activated in the program mode, this display will not appear.

Scroll down to display the current status of the RINSE function. If this function has not been activated in the program mode, this display will not appear.

Scroll down to display the current status of the DRAIN function. If this function has not been activated in the program mode, this display will not appear.

Scroll down to display the current status of the SERVICE function. If this function has not been activated in the program mode, this display will not appear.

Scroll down to return to the WATER LEVEL display.

MONITORING AND CONTROLLING THE BACKUP FUNCTION: If BACKUP ON has been set to a non-zero value in the program mode, BACKUP will appear in the user mode with status options of "automatic", "off", and "on". The following procedure is used to change these settings.

Begin at the WATER LEVEL display.

Scroll down to display the current status of the BACKUP function. If this function has just been activated in the program mode, the default status will be "automatic". Whenever the backup system is on, the yellow backup indicator will light.

To change the status, press the Modify button and "automatic" will begin to blink, indicating the system is ready to accept changes.

Scroll down to "off". Selecting this option will disable the backup system, so if the water level in the rainwater tank becomes too low to pump, no backup water will be available. This is typically used when the backup system requires service.

Scroll down to "on". Selecting this option will activate the backup system even if rainwater is available. This is used for testing and maintenance. Use carefully where backup water flows directly into the rainwater tank to avoid water waste I

Press the Modify button to select "on". The yellow backup indicator on the control panel will light and the backUp system will turn on.

After 30 seconds, the display will return to WATER LEVEL. The backup system will remain on until the above procedures are used to select "automatic".

MONITORING AND CONTROLLING THE TRANSFER FUNCTION: If TRANSFER ON has been set to a value less than 101 % in the program mode, TRANSFER will appear in the user mode with status options of "automatic" and "off". If TRANSFER LIMIT has been set to a non-zero value, there Will also be a status option of "on". The following procedure is used to change these settings.

Scroll down to "off". Selecting this option will disable the transfer system regardless of how high the water level rises. This is typically used when the transfer system requires service.

Press the Modify button to select "on". Transfer will begin and the display will show "in progress" followed by the current water level.

When the water level drops by the programmed TRANSFER LIMIT", transfer will stop and the TRANSFER status will return to "automatic" Pressing the Modify button at any time before this will immediately stop the transfer

MONITORING AND CONTROLLING THE RINSE FUNCTION: If RINSE INTERVAL and RINSE TIM E have both been set to non-zero values in the program mode, RINSE will appear in the user mode with status options of "automatic", "off", and "on". The following procedure is used to change these settings.

When the rinse time has passed, rinsing will stop and the RII\JSE status will return to "automatic". Pressing the Modify button at any time before this will immediately stop the rinsing.

MONITORING AND CONTROLLING THE DRAIN FUNCTION: If DRAIN DELAY and DRAIN TIME have both been set to non-zero values in the program mode, DRAIN will appear in the user mode with status options of "automatic", "off", and "on". The following procedure is used to change these settings.

When the drain time has passed, draining will stop and the DRAIN status will return to "automatic". Pressing the Modify button at any time before this will immediately stop the draining.

MONITORING AND CONTROLLING THE SERVICE FUNCTION: If SERVICE CYCLE has been set to a non-zero value In the program mode, NEXT SERVICE will appear in the user mode, followed by the number of days remaining until system maintenance is required. This maintenance reminder starts at the number of days in SERVICE CYCLE and counts down to o. When it reaches O. the red servce indicator lights and remains lit until this service timer is reset using the following procedure:

Scroll down to display the current status of the 1\1 EXT SERVICE function. In this case, the servce light is lit and "0 days" is displayed.

To reset the servce reminder, press the Modify button and "0 days" will begin to blink, indicating the system is ready to accept changes.

Since the number of days in the service cycle is a continuous loop, scrolling down once changes the number of days to the total set as SERVICE CYCLE

Press the Modify button to reset the maintenance reminder. The service light will turn off.
