What most people don't realize is for the shot of 2 people jumping the tracks in front of a trainthere is an old movie trick to do that. Using a powerful telephoto lens, it can look like people arealmost in front of the train when in fact there is quite some distance between the people and thetrain. It is still dangerous to jump in front of a moving trains at any distance because you neverknow when you will slip on a rail or ballast. NB

Times Mar 28, 2015Just before 11 a.m., a driver in a silver Hyundai sedan turned left across the tracks toward a USC campusgate and collided with the train. Metro train lines need better intersection safety design: Guest CommentaryLA Daily NewsApr 3, 2015A study conducted by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) on 10 light rail systems across the nationrevealed that motor vehicle turns in front of overtaking light rail trains account for the largest proportionof accidents, 56 percent in Los Angeles. On many occasions, this is due to a lack of warning signs or of agate preventing a left turn across the tracks. In some cases, drivers in a hurry will deliberately drivearound closed gates that are intended to block traffic from crossing the tracks. Even if a warning isalready given, vehicles may not have ample time to clear the tracks.

week's LA Metro Expo Line derailment. After all of these events the media has questioned thesafety of rail service. But this single accident with a church van in Florida killed more people thanall the passenger train accidents of the last 2 months. How serious are church van or busaccidents? It is hard to find data on this. But a Google search of church bus accidents will bringthe names of dozens of law firms which specialize in church bus accidents. The problem is not withpassenger trains. Passengers often survive accidents with massive physical destruction. The fault ofall of these and most accidents on the railroad rights of way are by people or their vehicles beingon the tracks where they don't belong. The bigger problem are road accidents which are socommon that they often don't make the news. It may not be until most road vehicles are driven bycomputers and not people that roads become truly safe. NB

Should a 710 Freeway tunnel allow trucks and will it be safe? The San Gabriel Valley TribuneMar 31, 2015While the debate over extending the 710 Freeway is six decades old, a new angle involving doing it bytunnel is grabbing most of the air time, even though four options are being examined by Caltrans....At a price of $3.1 billion to $5.65 billion, the tunnel would cost more than a proposed lightrail line, estimated at $2.4 billion. Some argue the real cost will end up closer to $10 billion....In a nuanced stand,Duarte City Councilman John Fasana, one of the panelists and a Metro board member, said trucks shouldbe prohibited from the tunnel. ...Najarian agreed, but said the trucking lobby and port shipping businesses will want access to the newportion of the freeway to move goods from south to north. “It is Metro’s intention that this be a truckfreight corridor,” he said. All the more reason to send intermodal port traffic by rail. And, what, no comment from our esteemededitor? :)Tom CockleMcKinleyville CAI read a lot of material preparing the eNewsletter so I often scan but don't study every word. What I liked about this story was it gave a review of Amtrak's legal status now as a part of thegovernment. The original plan was for the railroads to save money on passenger service byconsolidating it into Amtrak. Amtrak was suppose to operate like a terminal district or a unionstation with ownership shared by the railroads. NB

Re: Southwest Chief dilemmaHI Noel: This is Earl Nickles. Member of the Orange County Rail .Historical.Society. retired Barberfrom the Overland trail and 23 year operator at the Orange Empire Railway Museum.. I think the realsolution to the Southwest Chief dilemma is a second train to run the L.A. to Chicago route throughTexas. That is the route I road years ago when in the Navy on the Grand Canyon Limited. It would begreat for me now. I could board at Fullerton and get off at Clovis just north of Portalis where my brotherlives. That would be great. Both possible S,W, Chief routes cover two different but vast areas betweenN.M. and Kansas that both need to be served and would also provide two different departure and arrivalchoices at each end. Yes, I know, all it would require is money. As much as the government waists now itshould be no problem to findEarl Nickles.Better yet would be for the Southwest Chief to be operated with 2 sections. Running longer trainsdoesn't add traffic on busy railroads like the BNSF. But it opens many new markets for railservice when trains split into sections. There are plenty of places that should be connected withbetter rail service. The money is there to do this. The problem is convincing people to spend it. NB
