The Bee ispassing off silly legislation as important legislative work in an effort to make our representative appearridiculous. Please tell me that The Bee doesn’t really consider this frontpage news. Is it really that slowin the Valley?Note to Rep. Denham: allowing pets on Amtrak trains will not increase ridership. If you knew anythingabout the difficulties facing rail transportation, you would know bringing your pet is not one of them. Here’s a suggestion: ride the rails between Washington D.C. and Modesto instead of flying. Do it for ayear. Then you will understand what Amtrak really needs.

GUEST COLUMN: Amtrak spending money in the wrong placesMyWebTimes.com Feb 16, 2015The Chicago SunTimes reported Amtrak is going to spend $12 million to renovate Union Station inChicago. When I read this, I thought to myself Amtrak could have spent the money better by putting innew cars on their West Coast lines. The past six years, my husband and I have traveled first class to the West Coast three times and will begoing again this year, since my husband doesn’t like to travel on flying cattle cars unless he really has to.On our last trip we noticed a decline in the rail quality given by Amtrak.

Next CityFeb 19, 2015The longdistance train is one of America’s greatest and least heralded public spaces. Perhaps withoutintending to, the train encapsulates many qualities of public spaces that planners and designers try so hardto create. It is democratic in that it serves people across many different communities, geographies andinterest groups. It is diverse in that it appeals to a broad spectrum of people across ages, ethnicities, races, nationalities and genders, and critically, it facilitates connections between these different people.

California HighSpeed Rail Order Is a Who's Who in TrainsBloomberg Feb 19, 2015(Bloomberg) California has set off a global race to supply train cars for the state’s nascent highspeedrail line, a $1 billion contract proponents say could fuel a U.S. manufacturing boom worth far more thanthat. The state’s HighSpeed Rail Authority is seeking bids to supply 16 trains, each capable of carrying 450passengers at speeds faster than 200 miles an hour. Germany’s Siemens AG and Canada’s BombardierInc. are among nine foreign manufacturers that have told California they are interested in bidding for thecontract, which the state will award early next year.

Highspeed rail needs ValleytoL.A. link firstModesto Bee (blog)Feb 18, 2015I can’t warm up to the Dodgers, Angels, Lakers, Clippers or much else about that part of the state. Andwhile this might seem sacrilegious to some, I am totally nonplussed by Disneyland. That stated, there are times – OK, maybe just one time – when L.A. really should take top priority.

As the design process moves to center stage, California should look to rail systems across Europe to fullyunderstand the challenge of building a transportation hub that connects to the community. The arrival ofhighspeed rail can provide opportunities to transform adjacent station areas and reshape local economiesthrough thoughtful planning and policies that integrate the railway stops with the local business andphysical environment.

CNR: Inside The Bullet Train's Dragon DenForbes Feb 16, 2015All kind of passenger trains are produced here, underground metro, Intercity trains, tramways and ofcourse the bullet train. Steel and composite materials are used in manufacturing them. Aluminium alloysare particularly favoured, as they are lighter and limit vibration. CNR’s bullet train is the “little brother”of the Siemens “Velaro” bullet train. CNR bought three sets of this train, including plans and right ofreproduction. The result is a most competitive train, the CR380B, which can attain a commercial speed of 380kph. It isa contender to Alstom’s AVE, Kawasaki’s efSET, Siemens Velaro, and both JVs of CanadianBombardier (Talgo [Spain] and AnsaldoBreda [Italy]). Nine of those consortia are now preparing tocompete in the US for an initial order of 15 to 20 trains to link Merced and Burbank in the GoldenState’s proposed highspeed rail network for a “modest” initial investment of $889 million. But this willbe just a first step for California: by 2028, when the phase 1 of the statewide system between SanFrancisco and Anaheim is scheduled to be completed, capital spending on the project could balloon to$68 billion, which means that the winning group will be asked to manufacture both rolling stock andcomponents in California.

Highrises don’t cause traffic; parking lots do Streetsblog Feb 17, 2015Few things evoke carmaggedon hysteria quite like the construction of a tall residential building. AsAustin has seen more growth, some have seized on the relatively few highdensity housing developmentsas a source of the region’s traffic problem. But housing density is not the cause of traffic congestion, says Carrie Gammell at Car Free Austin:It seems that local media outlets constantly bemoan the statistic that 110 people move to Austin on anaverage day. Tall buildings, skyscrapers, 10to50story buildings full of people are presumably toblame. Meanwhile, the city is still not as dense as it was in 1950, 1960, 1970, or 1980.In fact, 2015 Austin is only 68% as dense as 1950 Austin.1950 Austin had no towers. An aerial photograph of the city shows a downtown almost entirely coveredwith trees and buildings, the tallest of which was the Texas State Capitol.

A New Index to Measure Sprawl Gives High Marks to Los AngelesCityLab Feb 17, 2015L.A. is the least sprawling metro area in the country, according to this analysis, besting New York andSan Francisco.Perhaps the biggest surprise is that L.A. ranks as the least sprawling metro in the country, ahead of NewYork and San Francisco. As Laidley writes: “Although Los Angeles is often popularly associated withsprawl because of its pollution and traffic, its sheer lack of very lowdensity development places it atopall U.S. metro areas.” In fact, six of the top 10 least sprawling metros in the country are in California:L.A., San Francisco, San Jose, Salinas, Santa Barbara and San Diego. Seven of ten are on the WestCoast. Outside of that, Chicago ranks seventh and, also surprisingly, autooriented Miami is tenth. TheEast Coast metros of Philadelphia, Boston and D.C. all fail to make the top 10 list.

Marin Independent JournalFeb 20, 2015The agency has two choices. It can make a fundamental error by hiring its own operating team andcreating a standalone SMART bureaucracy. The wiser alternative is to contract with an experienced realworld commuter rail management firm to actually run the trains. Some transit observers believe SMART’s failure to make a decision by this stage of the game isintentional. A nondecision makes the creation of an inhouse team a fait accompli.
