Focus on sustainable transports

Emission of carbon dioxide from different means of transport(Figures from Germany 2007)

Railway transports 24 grammes per ton-kmRoad transports 88 grammes per ton-kmAir transports 665 grammes per ton-kmSea transports 35 grammes per ton-km

DB Rail runs about 5 000 freight trains daily throughout Europe. This represents about100 000 truck trips each day and the emission of carbon dioxide can be reduced by 25 000 tons.

Page 13: Rail Logistics and Forwarding DB SCHENKERrailog Schenker AB Rail Logistics and Forwarding August 2010

A transfer to railway reduces the emissions

Increased transported volumes

Increased transported volumes in Europe have resulted in an increase of the emissions of carbon dioxide by about 25% for the transport sector between 1990 and 2010.

Other sectors, such as energy, industry, agriculture and waste disposal, are supposed to decrease by up to 47%.

It is possible to save up to 75% of the emission of carbon dioxide by transferring transports from road to rail.

Environmental calculations on line

Online tool to measure the environmental impact

It is easy to calculate the environmental impact for a transport by making an emission calculation. On DB Schenker’s web-site you will find a simple tool, illustrating a rough calculation of the consumed energy and which emissions a transport with DB Schenker are causing.
