RailwayMinisterSureshPrabhuhasgivendirectionsforleveragingtheuseofITinrailwayfunctioningandtheuseofradiofrequencyidentification(RFID)devicesinwagons,coachesandlocomotivesisastepinthatdirection,saidaseniorRailwayMinistryofficial.
PrabhuwillproposethatRFIDdevicesbeusedforfreightmaintenancemanagement,locomotivemanagement,coachmaintenancemanagementandfuelmanagementsystemssoastoensuremoreeffectiveandtransparentfunctioning.
UsingRFIDdevices,itwillbeeasierforRailwaystoknowtheexactpositionofwagons,locomotivesandcoachesandalsothefuelposition.Currently,suchdataismaintainedmanually,whichleavesroomforinaccuracy.
TherewillbeaprogressiveshiftfromperiodicmaintenancetopredictivemaintenanceofrollingstockbyleveragingIT,theofficialadded.
WiththeintroductionofRFID,theissueofshortageofwagons,locomotivesandcoachesisexpectedtobeaddressedinamoretransparentandexpeditiousmanner,theofficialsaid.
ITwillalsobeusedforenhancingthesecurityofrailwaypassengers,particularlywomen.ProvisionofCCTVcamerasinladies'coachesanddevelopmentofanappforimprovingthesecurityofwomenpassengersarealsolikelytobeannounced.
DigitisedlandmappingisalsoexpectedtobepartoftheBudgetproposal.Creationofalandbankandcommercialutilisationofvacantlandisthemotivebehindgoingfordigitisedlandmapping,theofficialsaid.
WhileNewDelhistationhasalreadybecomeWiFiequipped,Prabhuiskeentoextendthefacilityatothermajorstations.
Thetwinproposalsforeprocurementandepaymentarealsotobemadespecificallytopromoteegovernanceinrailways,hesaid.
