Montana show. Cyrus, it seems, didn't laugh. Instead, he arranged for the trip and, in true radio fashion, the station launched a contest. And that's how Pat, Tom, their kids and two winners ended up at a closed-set rehearsal of Disney's pre-teen blockbuster series. After the rehearsal, Billy Ray, his daughter and the show's star Miley, and other cast members sat for an almost 30-minute interview. Pat and Tom aired it the next morning while broadcasting from the studio of CBS sister Alternative KROQ/Los Angeles. "Billy Ray told us it's the first time in the show's two year history anyone from the radio industry has been on the set of the show or had access to the cast in that way," Mailey says.

Nashville's Slow Start (continued from page 1) While a few television critics were positive (as ranked on www.metacritic.com), nine of 13 panned the show: The Tennessean: “The show focuses on six twenty-somethings who moved to Nashville to pursue their music. Make no mistake: Raging hormones — instead of impressive harmonies — are the focus of this series. The music and the industry behind it serve as a backdrop for their love lives, taking on no more significance than occupations of characters in sitcoms. From the creators of Laguna Beach, Nashville resembles that show, only with a Southern accent.” San Jose Mercury News: "Slickly produced, just like Laguna Beach, the show could grow on you quickly because those involved are actually talented and engaging on- and offstage." Miami Herald: "...practically every note except the ones they sing rings false. The show's dialogue feels scripted, its frequent

hookups and breakups abrupt and phony, and its scenes from the music business out and out fraudulent. Or does the Grand Ole Opry really leave its doors unlocked and its sound system switched on so random young wannabes can wander in off the street to sing a few tunes for their camera crews?" Los Angeles Times: "Nashville is one of the last true company towns -- the country music industry dominates it socially and professionally. Still, there must be some conversations that don't involve the record business, no? If so, they're not shown. And worse, almost every scene feels ploddingly staged. Every conversation is alarmingly, and unconvincingly, topical; no scene is wasted." Chicago Tribune: "It all seems painfully staged and contrived, but take heart: Given that this is a show on Fox’s failure-prone Friday nights, I can’t imagine Nashville clogging up the airwaves for long." At least one of our radio respondents had hope: "It was pretty good because it was Friday night, I had three beers and I saw my office on TV,” joked Big D & Bubba producer Patrick Thomas. “It’s good for the format. If it works, we will have artists who audiences already have a vested interest in before their songs even come out like American Idol did with Carrie Underwood. We’re going to get true stars in the format, if it works. And if it does, it can only be good and we should all get behind it." But then, everything looks better after three beers.
