In February 2017, we celebrate HPR’s 35th anniversary with a realignment of our programs along these two distinct formats. This is the fulfillment of a promise made at the stations founding, and realized over the years through the generous contributions of many thousands of member donors and hundreds of business underwriters. Their support made possible the expansion of HPR’s network to include service across the Hawaiian islands – sometimes to populations in remote locations where our broadcast signal is the only one received.
With the more recent digital developments in our medium, Hawai‘i Public Radio and the unique stories we are privileged to tell now also belong to the world. We encourage you to find us streaming on your computer or via our free mobile app, wherever you may be tuning in.

Brought together by host John Diliberto, a writer for Billboard, Pulse, and other magazines.
EVENING JAZZMON - THU 8 – 10PM
Featured are new vocal and instrumental recordings and jazz artists. The program’s hourly jazz calendar updates the jazz fan with venues and ensembles performing the music they love throughout Hawai‘i. Host Charles Husson is HPR’s Operations Director and a classically trained pianist, who also played disco, jazz, rock and gospel in professional bands.
FREAKONOMICS RADIOSUN 11AM – NOON
Tune in to explore “the hidden side of everything” on this radio program, which also happens to be the most popular podcast in the world (more than 8 million downloads per month). Hosted by Stephen J. Dubner, co-author of Freakonomics and SuperFreakonomics, with co-author Steven D. Levitt as a regular guest.
FRESH AIRMON – FRI 3 – 4PM
This magazine of contemporary arts and issues is one of public radio's most popular programs. Its 1994 Peabody Award citation credits Fresh Air with “probing questions, revelatory interviews and unusual insights.” The show gives each intimate conversation as much time as needed, and complements them with comments from well-known critics and commentators. Hosted by Terri Gross.

Produced by NPR and WBUR in Boston, Here and Now reflects the fluid world of news as it’s happening in the middle of the day, with timely, smart and in-depth news, interviews and conversation. Co-hosted by award-winning journalists Robin Young and Jeremy Hobson, the show’s daily lineup includes interviews with NPR reporters, editors, and bloggers, as well as leading newsmakers, innovators, and artists from across the U.S. and around the globe.

Invisibilia (Latin for “invisible things”) is about those unseen forces that control human behavior – ideas, beliefs, assumptions, and emotions. Co-hosted by Lulu Miller, Hanna Rosin, and Alix Spiegel, Invisibilia interweaves narrative storytelling with scientific research that will ultimately make you see your own life differently.

“Kanikapila” means “play music” in Hawaiian, and listeners will hear the latest recordings, plus classic songs from the Hawaiian music renaissance. Musicians sometimes drop in for in-studio performances or conversation with HPR host Derrick Malama.

Put the work week behind you with the exuberant sounds of Latin music. HPR’s Ray Cruz, former host of Sabor Tropical, plays new releases, classics, and music that will “make your ears smile.”
LEFT, RIGHT & CENTERFRIDAY 6:30 – 7PM
KCRW’s weekly confrontation over politics, policy, and popular culture bills itself as a “civilized yet provocative antidote to the screaming talking heads that dominate political debate.” This weekly “love-hate relationship of the air” features some of the most insightful news analysts around. Hosted by Josh Barro and Rich Lowry.
MARKETPLACEMON – FRI 6 – 6:30PM
The latest business news both nationally and internationally, with special focus on the global economy and wider events linked to the financial markets. The only national daily news program originating from the West Coast, Marketplace is noted for its timely, relevant, and accessible coverage of business economics and personal finance. Host and senior editor is Kai Ryssdal. A sister program, the Marketplace Morning Report, offers short segments on Morning Edition (M – F 5:51 and 7:51AM).

NPR’s flagship morning news program is a bi-coastal, 24-hour news operation and the most listened-to news radio program in the country. THE MOTH RADIO HOURSAT 2 – 3PM
A celebration of both the raconteur, who breathes fire into true tales of ordinary life, and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it, the radio shows also include the stories behind the stories. Centered around a theme, all the stories are told live and without notes to a live audience. From The Moth, an acclaimed nonprofit organization dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling.
THE NEW YORKER RADIO HOURSUN 9 - 10AM
Each episode of this weekly program features a diverse mix of interviews, profiles, storytelling, and an occasional burst of humor inspired by The New Yorker Magazine and shaped by its writers, artists and editors. But this isn’t a radio version of a magazine—it’s something all its own, reflecting the rich possibilities of audio storytelling and conversation. Presented by the magazine’s editor David Remnick.

Based on the live variety shows of the early years of the Grand Ole Opry, A Prairie Home Companion has had an infusion of new blood. Thile has broadened the show’s musical line-up and offers as his signature piece the “Song of the Week,” with his original lyrics and instrumentation on a topic currently in the news. (HPR has presented nationally broadcast live tapings of APHC in Honolulu four times.)

A show about curiosity, where sound illuminates ideas and the boundaries blur between science, philosophy, and human experience. Produced by WNYC in New York City and co-hosted by NPR Science Correspondent Robert Krulwich and Jad Abumrad.

New releases, classic live recordings, and musical biographies celebrating the birthdays of great jazz artists. Host Seth Markow accompanies recordings representing the entire historical and stylistic spectrum of jazz with his entertaining and informative comments. Listener requests are welcome.

A radio game show of bluff and bluster, words and whimsy. The show is taped before a live audience and features a regular group of panelists divided into two three-person teams. In the course of the hour, they play a series of language games, including the highlight rounds in which the definition of obscure words must be identified from fake definitions devised by the panelists. Host Barry Nolan.
SCIENCE FRIDAYFRI 1 – 3PM
News and entertaining stories about science and technology from the outer reaches of space to the tiniest microbes in our body. Host and executive producer is award-winning science correspondent Ira Flatow. A regular feature on the show is "Science and the Sea"TM, a production of The University of Texas Marine Science Institute, which aims to convey an understanding of the sea’s critical role in mankind’s survival on land.

A culinary, culture, and lifestyle program that celebrates food and its ability to touch the lives and feed the souls of everyone. Featured on this newest of HPRʻs classical music programs will be the great orchestras, artists, and opera companies of the Pacific region, including Hawai‘i’s own. Every other Friday, a special segment called “The Big Ears Club” introduces young listeners to the joys of classical music. Hosted by John Kalani Zak.
COLLECTORS’ CORNER TUES 8 – 10PM
A wide range of recordings from host Henry Fogel’s personal collection crafted into a historical narrative. According to Fogel, it’s “either unusual repertoire that I feel deserves a wider public, or performances unique in their interpretive profile, sense of commitment, and intensity.”
THE EARLY MUSESAT 6 – 7PM
HPR’s resident early music expert Ian Capps finds a theme each week to bring to life the 500 formative years of European music from medieval chant and troubadour songs, through the rich polyphony of Renaissance sacred and secular music, and into the baroque “revolution” of the 17th century with its invention of the opera, oratorio, ballet, and orchestral music as we know it today.

A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANIONSUN 7 – 9PM
Based on the live variety shows of the early years of the Grand Ole Opry, A Prairie Home Companion has had an infusion of new blood. Before he retired, show creator and host Garrison Keillor hand picked singer, songwriter, and mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile as his heir. Thile has broadened the show’s musical line-up and offers as his signature piece the “Song of the Week,” with his original lyrics and instrumentation on a topic currently in the news. (HPR has presented nationally broadcast live tapings of APHC in Honolulu four times.)

A celebration of music in film. Timely box office tie-ins, enticing weekly themes, talk, and music are all woven together by host Edmund Stone, a classically trained Shakespearean actor.
SINATRA: THE MAN AND THE MUSICSUN 9 – 10PM
The life and times of one of the 20th century's greatest entertainers – Frank Sinatra – as told through archival recordings, radio and television appearances, live performances, and excerpts from interviews with Sinatra himself, as well as commentary from the arrangers, musicians, songwriters, and others who worked with him during his long career. A unique production of HPR, hosted by Guy Steele.
SINGING AND OTHER SINSSAT 5 – 6PM
Originally called Great Songs, this is one of HPR’s longest running, locally produced programs (originating in 1988), and the only remaining radio broadcast worldwide dedicated to the classical art song. Local host Gary Hickling offers art songs in the context of other music of the composer or period, thus providing context. After a non-art song interlude, he repeats the song (often by a different voice type or interpretation) to give the listener a better chance to enjoy them.
STAR DATEMON – FRI 7:57PM DURING EVENING CONCERT
The two-minute program from the McDonald Observatory in Austin, Texas, helps listeners learn more about astronomy and space exploration. Find out what to look for in the night sky, what goes on inside stars and distant galaxies, and hear about new space missions.
