MINNESOTA TWINS MINI-PLANS 7
The Various Mini-Plans of the Minnesota Twins
Sport organizations across the world recognize the importance of getting people into their
facilities, which is why there are constantly new and different ways to cater to the needs of
consumers. Season tickets are a huge revenue source for many organizations. In Major League
Baseball, teams such as the Minnesota Twins play 81 home games. It is very unlikely that a
person can make every single game so the organization has to create mini-plans that allow the
consumer to pick a package with a smaller amount of games. The Minnesota Twins currently
have 11 different mini-plans for the 2016 season. The analysis of the different mini-plans and the
pricing structure and timelines of each plan will showcase how the Minnesota Twins create
specific packages for the needs of their fans.
The Different Packages
The 11 mini-plan packages that the Minnesota Twins offer their fans range from 40
games plans to 10 game plans. Plans such as the 40 game and the 20 game include alternative
packages with a selection of games for fans to pick from. The variety allows fans to choose the
best option to fit their personal schedules. Having different levels of packages may push a fan
who is just starting to go to games to choose the Pick 10 plan that includes ten games instead of
just buying a ticket to one game. The types of plans offered are two 40 game plans, four 20 game
plans, a Flex plan, a Pick 10 plan, and a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday weekend plan.
40 Game Plan
It is more reasonable that one individual would be able to make 40 games of a season
than 81 home games. The Minnesota Twins feature two 40 game plans, plan A and plan B. These
plans specifically guarantee that the fan will get the same seats for every game. Besides season
MINNESOTA TWINS MINI-PLANS 8
ticket holders, those who purchase these plans have more sections available for them to sit in.
There is a club level for those who want to spend more in the Delta SKY360° Club section. At
the main level there is space in the diamond box, field box, and the left field bleachers. This plan
also allows fans to sit at the outfield mezzanine and in the terrace with options such as home
plate and field terrace, and home plate, skyline, and field view.
One major draw of the 40 game plan is that both packages make sure to include two
Yankees games. These games are really high in demand so buying the package ensures that
customers will be able to get a ticket. Division rival games against the White Sox and the Detroit
Tigers are also included in both packages. In plan A there are four White Sox games and five
Tigers games and in plan B there are five White Sox games and four Tigers games. Making sure
the number of quality games included are equal is crucial because then the consumer will see
both plans as equal. If one plan cost way more than the other the consumer would most likely
expect it to have a higher number of quality games. Some consumers may decide to buy the
cheaper package. However, if the packages are equal in price and in quality the organization does
not have to worry about making less revenue on a cheaper 40 game plan. Along with high quality
match ups, the Minnesota Twins have made sure to include games where attendance numbers are
usually low. For the 2015 season, two games against the Cleveland Indians had the lowest
attendance. On Sunday, April 19 attendance was 17,923 and on Wednesday, September 23
attendance was 17,831 people; these numbers are lower than the 40,123 people who attended
opening day that same season against the Royals (Palmer & Gillette, 2015). The organization
makes sure to mix and match to try to get more people to show up for the lower tier games. Plan
A include six Cleveland Indian games and two Red Sox games while Plan B has three Indian
games and only one Red Sox game. The plans also include a mixture of week days and weekends
MINNESOTA TWINS MINI-PLANS 9
games to best accommodate people’s schedules. The 40 game plan is a good tool for the
Minnesota Twins because fans pay for 40 games and may have a better chance of making most
of them because they have two lists of games available to them.
20 Game Plan
The next level plan is the 20 game plan which features four different package options
known as C, D, E, and F. Each package makes sure to include one Yankees game and a mixture
of White Sox and Detroit Tiger games with games on every day of the week and various
weekend days. These packages may be easier to market to fans because there are high quality
games featured but less games that a fan has to be committed to and pay for. For plans C and D
that include more Tigers and White Sox games, there are also more Cleveland Indian games. It
seems the organization was once again trying to balance out the high quality games with games
where attendance is usually low. Getting more people to the facility for the game is extremely
important because it can lead to more sources of revenue such as concessions and merchandise.
The 20 game plan does not include a guarantee that the fan will have the same seat for all the
games. The main difference in the seating sections available is that the 20 game plan does not
include any club seating like the 40 game plan does. There are also no specific amenities or extra
benefits listed in the description of the plan. The main benefit is that the fan saves money by
paying for a more reasonable number of games that they can attend.
Flex Plan
The Flex Plan allows a fan to get a bank of 20 tickets. These tickets can be used as a
normal mini-plan or they may be used as a group sale tactic. The individual can choose to attend
20 different games or may decide to bring along a friend to ten different games. Along with this
MINNESOTA TWINS MINI-PLANS 10
benefit, flex plan users also get 10% off merchandise and other features that are similar to those
season ticket holders receive. One catch of this plan, is that a few games that are excluded
including the home opener, a Friday and Saturday game against the Red Sox, a Friday and
Saturday game against the Yankees, and a Saturday game against the Royals, Indians, White Sox,
and Rangers. These games are most likely not included because demand will be higher which
means that single ticket prices can be higher. However, even though those games are excluded
there are still high quality games to pick from such as two other Yankees games and nine White
Sox games. The options for seating include home plate view and field box. The Flex plan is the
newest mini-plan that the Twins have so it will be interesting to see if it is successful. It does
allow for more options for fans and can better cater to their needs.
Pick 10 Plan
One of the most fluid choices for a fan is the Pick 10 plan. Coupled with the same
benefits as season ticket holders and your choice of any ten games (even the games that were
mentioned previously that had been excluded from the Flex plan), it allows fans to create their
own specific plan. It is similar to the Flex plan because it allows spectators to sit in the home
plate view and field box sections. This plan could potentially be a major proponent in making the
organization money which will be discussed in the pricing analysis.
Weekend Plans
The final group of mini-plans that the Minnesota Twins offer are the weekend plans.
There is a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday plan that each includes 13 games. These packages are
pretty equal in game quality. Each has one Yankees game, two White Sox games, and one Tigers
game. These plans allow fans to have consistency in their schedules so that they do not have to
plan for random week games. It also helps people who do not have time to go to games during
MINNESOTA TWINS MINI-PLANS 11
the week. The sections available for the weekend plans for seating include the field box and the
U.S. Bank home run porch terrace. The weekend plans do not include any extra amenities. The
weekend plans still allow fans to see thirteen games and guarantees them tickets to games that
are higher demand.
Pricing Structures
The Minnesota Twins have different pricing structures for their mini-plans. Some pricing
structures allow the organization to make more money on the tickets while others keep the prices
the same for the consumers. The groupings of pricing structures include the 40 and 20 game
plans, the Flex and Pick 10 plans, and the weekend plans.
40 and 20 Game Plan
The 40 game and 20 game plans have similarities in the number of tickets a customer has
access to, the incentives, and game pricing. For each plan there is a limited amount of tickets that
may be purchased. One individual may only buy a maximum of eight tickets. The other limits are
based on each household account; those in “Twins Territory”, which includes Minnesota,
Wisconsin, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Indiana, are allowed eight tickets and anyone
outside of “Twins Territory” are limited to four tickets. If any purchases are made online over the
designated amount, then that person will automatically get those extra tickets refunded. As
mentioned previously, the 40 game plan has the most sections available for consumers. Each
section has a different price range and the lowest price is $480 for field view. The highest value
is for the Delta SKY 360° Legends Club at $2,160. When comparing the 40 game plan price
structure to the 20 game plan one it is obvious that they are based off of one another. Both have a
diamond box section and a field box section for fans. The 40 game plan has its diamond box at
$1,640 which breaks down to $41 a game which is exactly what the rate per game is for the 20
MINNESOTA TWINS MINI-PLANS 12
game plan for that same section. It also is the same for the field box section which ends up
breaking down to $32 a game for both plans. Keeping the prices the same between the season
ticket holders and these two plans makes it more convenient for fans. If one year they cannot
attend as many games as they have in the past, then they do not have to worry about spending
more money on less games. However, if prices were to decrease then more season ticket holders
might be apt to purchase a mini-plan instead of tickets for the whole season. The season ticket
plans actually use the same prices per game as these two plans. These are also the only plans that
include a premium for certain sections. In the first row of sections 3, 14, and 15 in the dugout
box, sections 104 and 124 in the diamond box, and 103 and 125 in the field box there is a $10
premium added on. For the first row of the sections in the Delta SKY360° Legends Club, home
plate terrace and field terrace there is a $5 premium. The only additional incentive between the
40 game and 20 game plan is that for the 40 game plan the fans will sit in the same seat for all of
the games they attend. The 40 game and 20 game plans are the closest to the season ticket
holders pricing structures because the organization would rather keep an individual in those three
plans then have them drop to the lesser plans. The organization wants more fans at more games
because of the additional revenue that can be accumulated which is a great benefit of the 40 and
20 game plans.
Flex and Pick 10 Plan
The next pricing structure deals with the Flex plan and the Pick 10 plan. Unlike the 40
and 20 game plans there is no given limit to the number of tickets that may be purchased at a
time for either of these plans. Fans may purchase tickets for the field box and home plate view.
The home plate view which is the cheapest option is $440 for the Flex plan and $220 for the Pick
10. The interesting factor of pricing structure for these plans is that surprisingly the price per
MINNESOTA TWINS MINI-PLANS 13
game is more than the season ticket holders and the 40 and 20 game plans. The field box prices,
which are $680 for the Flex plan and $340 for the Pick 10 plan are $34 per game. Prices may be
more because the organization has less control of what games a fan may pick. If they pick a
weekend game it makes sense that they would want the individual game price to be higher
because those games are higher in demand. The additional benefits in these plan may also be a
factor in the increased price per game. Fans receive 10% off merchandise and food, receive
discounted ticket pricing, and get enrolled in the Sweet Spot benefits program. Some benefits of
the Sweet Spot program can include being able to throw out the first pitch, autograph sessions,
meet and greets, all-star game viewing parties, and a spring training trip. Even though season
ticket holders are also offered the same benefits it may be easier to make a return on the benefits
with these lower level plans that cater to the needs of people who can only attend a quarter of
home games. The Flex plan and Pick 10 plan can make up more revenue by actually getting
people into the door since it is a smaller amount of games. Ticket prices are inelastic so fans may
not even realize the difference in price which is why the Twins were able to slightly increase the
price per game without it being detrimental to the amount of people who buy these plans.
Weekend Plans
The final pricing structure relate to the three different weekend plans that the Minnesota
Twins have. There is no limit given on how many tickets a single customer has access to for any
of the weekend plans. There are two sections available to these ticket holders including the field
box and the U.S. Bank porch terrace. Each weekend day has its own price structure. The field
box is $498 and the U.S. Bank porch terrace $355 for Friday games which equates to $38.31 a
game. The Saturday games are $41 for the field box which is the same as the diamond box was
for the season ticket holders. The cheapest weekend plan is Sundays which is only $35.08 a
MINNESOTA TWINS MINI-PLANS 14
game. Saturday nights are obviously the most attended so it makes sense that that price would be
the highest. It is easier for fans to get away on the weekends to go to a game then to go during
the week. There are not any additional incentives mentioned on the website but there are
firework nights that happen Friday nights for the season and there are plenty of promotions given
out on the weekends. Since the weekends are higher demand it is beneficial to fans to have
tickets purchased ahead of time so that they do not get sold out.
Timeline for Purchases
The final aspect of mini-plans is the timeline allowed for the tickets to be purchased.
Each mini-plan has its own specific set of rules of when it is available for fans. The Minnesota
Twins have similar reasons for keeping all their plans available for a certain length of time and
for how the packages can be purchased. For all of the mini-plans, the first task of purchasing is to
put down a $100 deposit which can be done right online on the website. The 40 game and 20
game plan tickets are available in print that can be mailed to the individual or picked up. The
paper option is there because ticket exchanges are allowed to happen for only these two plans. It
may also be easier for the ticket department to keep track of which games people have purchased
these plans for. The 40 game plan and 20 game plans on the website currently will close Monday,
April 11, to make room for a new set of 40 and 20 games. These plans can be purchased until
there are 39 games lefts, for the 40 game plan, which is on July 5, and 19 games for the 20 game
plan which occurs on August 24. The Flex Plan and the Pick 10 Plan may only be purchased
online and a digital copy can be used or the individual may print it out. The Flex plan has an
option to choose the games straight from a mobile device. There is an app and a website that
gives people access to these tickets. It is easier for the organization because these plans can
constantly change and are available for most of the season and it gives the fan more control of
MINNESOTA TWINS MINI-PLANS 15
their tickets. Staff does not have to stay on the phone with the fans while they choose what
games they want. The Pick 10 plan is available until there are only nine games left which will be
on September 9. The Flex plan is new and the Twins are willing to work with fans with that plan.
If the fan wanted to use ten tickets for one game that could potentially be an option. Technically,
that plan would not be complete until the last home game on September 25. The weekend plans
are available in digital format only and are only available to purchase until April 13 unless the
fan wanted to work with the organization and pay by a per game basis. These tickets are only
digital and may either stay digital or be printed out. Utilizing digital tickets is easier for the
Minnesota Twins and more convenient for the consumer. All of these mini-plans have their own
timelines that a ticket organization must keep track of so that fans are getting the most updated
plans.
Conclusion
The Minnesota Twins have 11 different mini-plans that work to give their fans the best
benefits while also bringing in the most revenue to the organization. There are several
similarities among the plans especially between the 40 and 20 game plans, and the Flex and Pick
10 plans. Each has its own quality games, pricing structures, incentives, and ways of purchasing
tickets and these mini-plans allow a the Minnesota Twins to serve more customers.
