I Was Just Thinking... Matthew Broderick is a favorite actor
of mine. While he always seems to play
a comical role in some capacity or
another, I recently was jettisoned back
in time to 1983 when the movie “War
Games” was shown. For those who
never saw it or forgot about it, “War
Games” is about a computer hacker
(Broderick) who breaks into the Air
Force’s nuclear missile system
computer and mistakenly plans an all-
out worldwide thermonuclear war which
looks real, but, is in fact, a computer simulation. The military thinks
it’s real and Broderick has to convince them and the computer to not
launch the missiles. Written at a time when nuclear proliferation was
still a primary national security
issue with the Soviet Union, it was
an attempt at being a part of the
national conversation of the
dangers of nuclear war and, in
particular, the U.S. involvement in
the nuclear arms race.
While the movie seems quaint
with the 30 year old technology
and the military bravado with the
Soviets, there was one exchange
in the movie that seems terribly
relevant today. As Dr. Stephen
Falkin, the creator of the computer
program, and Matthew Broderick’s
character attempt to override the
program, Dr. Falken begs the
General in charge to change the
order to prepare to launch our
missiles by using the following
reasoning:
Dr. Falken: “General, what you see on these screens up here is
a fantasy - a computer-enhanced hallucination. Those blips are not
real Soviet missiles. They're phantoms.”
General: “There's nothing to indicate a simulation. Everything's
working perfectly.”
Dr. Falken: “Does it make any sense?”
General: “Does what make any sense?”
Dr. Falken “That!”
General: “Look, I don't have time for a conversation right now.”
Dr. Falken: “General, are you prepared to destroy the enemy?
General: You betcha!”
Dr. Falken: “Do you think they know that?”
General: “I believe we've made that clear enough.”
Dr. Falken: “Then...don't. Tell the president to ride out the
attack. General, do you really believe that the enemy would
attack without provocation, using so many missiles and subs,
so that we would have no choice but to totally annihilate
them?”
In the end (spoiler alert) the General agrees and lets the
computer play out every possible nuclear war simulation and,
when finished, the computer gives the movie’s final judgment line
when it says, “Dr. Falken. That was a strange game. No one ever
wins. Now, how about a nice game of chess?”
No one ever wins a nuclear war. That was the force behind the
movie and the force that Einstein conveyed during the
development of the bomb. As the talk of Iran’s nuclear capabilities
dominates the news, we are forced, again, to confront this terrible
issue.
I have been asking myself, can a country, bent on acquiring
nuclear capabilities, be prevented from creating a weapon? By all
scholarly and scientific reports, it only can be delayed, not
prevented. Iran will become the 9th country in the world to have the
weapon. It’s just a matter of when. So, what do we do about it?
I suppose it depends on whom you ask. My Israeli friend, who
lives outside of Tel Aviv, is not concerned at all about Iran, but
rather desperately concerned about the faltering state of the Israeli
economy. The politicians in Israel, he said, especially Netanyahu,
haven’t been paying attention to what’s happening at home in the
lives of real Israelis.
He may be in the very small minority of Israelis and others
around the world. Most people
are worried about Iran making a
nuclear weapon. But, is it so bad
if they do? Will Iran immediately
use it to destroy Israel? I
wonder….
According to Jacques E.C.
Hymans of the Center On Foreign
Relations, “Although the
chances of an Iranian sneak-out
attempt [slowly building a nuclear
arsenal] are relatively great,
however, its odds of success are
extremely low. With the world’s
spy agencies devoting huge
resources to tracking events
inside Iran, any serious attempt at
cheating under a new nuclear
deal would probably get caught. If
Tehran somehow did manage to
cheat without notice, its secret program would nonetheless
advance slowly. Moreover, even in the unlikely eventuality of a
highly efficient secret effort, Iran would still fall short of a bona fide
nuclear weapons arsenal. The major powers, then, are right to
focus on getting an agreement that limits Iran’s genuine breakout
potential, not its highly questionable sneak-out potential….The
scenario of a devastating Iranian sneak-out is nothing more than a
fanciful hypothetical. Washington and its partners should not let
the fear of such a low-probability event divert their attention from
what remains an attainable and worthy goal: a comprehensive
agreement that brings about a substantial cut in Iran’s actual
uranium enrichment capabilities while showing due respect for
Iran’s legitimate desires for economic development and national
scientific achievement.”
I worry about Israel from within and without. I worry about not
knowing the future and how she might survive. I don’t wonder
about Israel’s capacity to respond to complex situations, strained
relations and existential threats - she has survived and the dream
of Israel cannot be extinguished. But, we all need to agree on one
thing; more than we have kept Israel alive and thriving, Israel has
kept us alive and thriving. Doing our part from this point on to
ensure that is maintained, whatever that may be, is our very
mandate.

Nu?
In this space, throughout my brief tenure as President of Temple Shalom, I have shared with you some of
our successes involving Tikkun Olam, Education, and touting our great staff, among other topics. This
month, I would like to share with you some nationwide perspective. As congregants, we often take for
granted what we see each day; giving little credence to even our own history. We often don’t recognize how
good we have it.
Unlike many congregations that have to beg members to sit on their Temple Board, we have more
congregants applying for board positions than we have vacancies. That can mean one of two things: either
congregants are excited about what we are doing and want to be involved, or they are planning a military
coup and several of us may end up in front of a firing squad. I prefer to presume it is the former.
Whereas most temples’ committees are run by the board members, Temple Shalom has over 36
committees, few of which have board members on them. That means, in addition to the Temple Board, our congregation has 30+
other congregational leaders leading our committees.
Most congregations tend to find their best leadership, and often their best programming, coming either from their Temple, their
Sisterhood, or sometimes their Brotherhood. I know of no other congregation that has such strength in all three.
Our Sisterhood continues to be a shining star for Temple Shalom. Aside from the leaders it has provided to both the regional
and national organizations, our Temple Sisterhood Board is as strong as ever. Many of us can recall a time in our youth when
Sisterhood was the alternative for women to get out of the house; those days are long gone. Sisterhood is made up of women who
not only help raise families, but work 40+ hours a week, volunteer for multiple organizations, and still find time to keep Sisterhood
vibrant, meaningful, and a critical cog in congregational life. And, in spite of enormous competition on the internet, Sisterhood’s
Traditions Gift Shop still provides our congregation with a first-class Judaica Shop staffed by volunteers, compared to the glass
cabinet that most congregations offer with the occasional mezuzah, menorah, dreidle, and chocolate gelt. The Spring Event/
Woman of Valor is just one of many terrific Sisterhood social programs, along with the many speakers, Tikkun Olam, and other
events and activities going on weekly. Moreover, Sisterhood’s Shabbat oneg, with its chopped liver, chicken salad, hummus,
variety of cheeses and fruit, makes it one of the best Friday Night buffets in the city (ask those who sometimes only come for the
oneg). Sisterhood has got it going on.
Go into most synagogues and ask them about their Brotherhood and they will just stare at you perplexed. While nationally we
see Brotherhoods shutting down faster than Radio Shacks, our congregation has one of the finest Brotherhoods in the country. In a
time when the national organization, the MRJ (Men of Reform Judaism) has closed its doors, Temple Shalom’s Brotherhood is
seeing its finest days. From its Holocaust programming to its breakfasts with big name stars, Margaritas and Mishnah, Guys Night
Out, and a host of other activities, we have never seen a men’s group like this. This year’s Shalom Award Dinner placed
Brotherhood and Temple Shalom onto the Metroplex-wide stage by honoring the President and CEO of the Dallas Holocaust
Museum/Center for Education and Tolerance, Mary Pat Higgins.
The fact that Temple Shalom sustains three separate, co-existing, strong boards is amazing. Even more incredible is the fact
that these groups don’t compete but rather work to complement each other. I am proud to have the honor of serving such an
amazing congregation and its incredible leadership.

Temple Shalom Spotlight Congregant of the Month
As part of getting to better know our congregation, each month we will feature a Temple Shalom Congregant.
Steve Weintraub
Please introduce your family.
Well, there’s my lovely wife Ann, daughters, Laurel and Jennifer, and son, Eric, and my son-in-law,
Rhys, and his wife, Jenna. Beyond that, there’s a swarm of wonderful family who are thankfully all
located in the Dallas area. I’ve saved the best for last though, as we have our granddaughter,
Skylynn, who is 6. Since she showed up, she trumps everyone else previously mentioned,
excluding Ann, of course! I tell the other kids that they’re now second stringers and they all
understand!
When did you join Temple Shalom?
I’ve been a member of Temple Shalom since 2000 actively. Before that, I’d made appearances off and on since 1983.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m all about people enjoying themselves and living in the moment and appreciating what they have. I came from a very
small family with no living grandparents, uncles, aunts or first cousins. So, I am glad we have grown so substantially in just
one generation to a relatively large family. Ann’s and my kids will always feel a part of something very whole and very
qualitative. I’ve been a lifelong salesperson—as a magazine/digital ad sales representative, a playground manufacturer’s
representative and I recently took a job as an outside residential sales representative for Terminix. I love helping and
meeting people, so a sales career has been a great fit for me. I love sports of all kinds and have played adult soccer on
weekends since 2005. My favorite team is the Dallas Mavericks.
You have been a teacher for Temple Shalom’s Religious School for years! What has drawn you to teach here?
I had a very intensive Orthodox Jewish Education through 7th grade in Cleveland, Ohio and I felt the calling in 2000 to
share my Jewish spiritual knowledge with young people, and hopefully, impress them with the beauty of our Torah,
customs, prayers, Midrash and the Hebrew language. It also brings back the wonderful memories of the school years that I
cherished with my own kids.
Of all the activities in which you have been involved at Temple, in which one did you have the most fun participating?
Being married under the chuppah to Ann in 2010 in the Epstein Chapel had to be the most fun event. The beautiful
ceremony and the pre-marital process presided over by Rabbi Paley were just extraordinary! After I stomped on the wine
glass, Rabbi Paley quipped to all in attendance that that would be my last opportunity to put my foot down in our
household! Very prophetic - as he was correct….
What is your favorite Jewish holiday and why?
Everyone answers Passover to this question, but I’ll be different and say Erev Yom Kippur because I know of no more
powerful moment in any of our prayers than when we listen to the Kol Nidre. It moves me like no other prayer and I’m
thankful to be around another year to experience it.
Which of your activities at Temple fulfills you the most or makes you feel the most connected to Judaism or your Jewish
identity?
My religious school teaching activities, Brotherhood involvement roles, attending services with my wife and family and
other temple-related interactions make up, for me, this beautiful fulfilling spiritual tapestry that continuously feeds my ever-
growing love for Judaism and my Jewish identity. I thoroughly enjoy our Friday night services, probably the most, as they
truly release me from my work week obligations and related stresses.
You are a member of the Temple Shalom Brotherhood. Why did you join and what would you tell others about it?
I joined several years ago because Dennis Eichelbaum asked me and I can’t refuse any temple–related request he
makes of me! It also had been on my mind for quite some time and, even when I had not been a member, I would
occasionally volunteer my time to some of their projects. Last year, I felt it was time to step up my efforts. When I got more
involved with Brotherhood, I merely was looking for a place to be a contributor. What I didn’t realize was how many
wonderful and fun new friends I would make, and what we could all accomplish together on so many Temple Shalom and
community-related endeavors! Winning Brotherhood Man of the Year last June was exhilarating and very special to me. To
be on the wall with others whom I deeply admire and who have contributed so much is just an incredible honor! I would
encourage any adult male member of our Temple to join and experience the wonderful brotherly experience that this group
offers!
Thank you for being our Spotlight Congregant, any parting words or thoughts?
Each year with my Religious School students, I make certain they are aware of many of the firsts that our Torah and the
Jewish people, historically, have gifted to humanity. I would encourage everyone to educate themselves on what some of
these are. Lastly, I would encourage all to take advantage of our temple’s resources and programming to fill up your life
with its offerings. The resulting benefits are well worth the time investment.

Lifelong Learning Council
As many of you know, my
philosophy of Jewish education is a
bit different than others. While
knowledge acquisition is a high
priority, my number one goal is for
our students to acquire a love of
Judaism and an affinity for our
Jewish community at Temple
Shalom. While this goal may be
achieved through traditional
educational means, I have found through my studies and
my experience that it takes a little more than a good
teacher and a lively textbook. In order for a child to truly
embrace his/her Jewish identity and develop a connection
to the Jewish community, we must provide the means. The
first and most important step in this process is the
development of relationships; relationships with peers,
teachers and clergy. At Temple Shalom, we aid in this
endeavor by providing opportunities for students to
socialize and get to know each other both inside the
classroom walls and out. During the first 15 minutes of
every class, students engage in “getting to know you”
activities. They learn about each other’s interests and find
commonalities. Outside of school hours, students are
invited to Junior Youth Group activities and Kesher
outings. These opportunities for relationship building are
integral to our students forming deep and meaningful
connections to one another and to Judaism.
In addition to developing meaningful relationships at
Temple Shalom, faculty, staff and clergy do everything in
our power to bring a sense of fun and excitement to our
weekly educational activities. This year we have added
monthly Sunday FUN Days which are days in which
students come dressed up based on a pre-selected
theme. Our 2014-15 FUN Days have included Temple
Shalom Spirit Day, Pajama Day and Mismatch Day, to
name a few! Additionally this year we have added a
variety of Holiday Fests in which students rotate through
hands on learning stations based on the selected holiday
theme. Our next Holiday Fest is on Sunday, March 1st
during which we will celebrate Purim. Grade level stations
will include making edible Haman cookies, playing Purim
games, and creating homemade masks and groggers
(noise makers).
At Temple Shalom, we believe that learning cannot
take place until students feel safe, happy and nurtured.
We are continually striving to achieve our goals and build a
sustainable Jewish home for our Jewish children.
May this month of Adar be filled with fun, joy and above
all peace!

Brotherhood Breakfast
I Am Malala: Speaker & Film
Sunday, March 22
9:00am Breakfast 9:30am Program Begins Radnitz Social Hall
Light Bagel Breakfast Free for Brotherhood Members, $5 for Guests
Marilyn Israel, Executive Director of the Legacy Retirement Community in Plano will give a short review
of the book I Am Malala and then will show Christiane Amanpour’s interview with Malala and her father,
Ziauddin Yousafzai, conducted shortly before Malala received the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize.
When the Taliban took control of Pakistan’s Swat Valley, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and
fought for her right to an education. On October 9, 2012, at age 15, she almost paid the ultimate price, shot in the head at point-
blank range while riding the bus home from school. Malala’s miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a
remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York City. At sixteen, she became a global symbol of
peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.
I Am Malala is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls’ education, of a father who,
himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a
fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons above daughters. Her story will make you believe in the power of one
person’s voice to inspire change in the world.
In recognition of her courage and advocacy, Malala was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014. She had also been honored
with the National Youth Peace Prize in Pakistan in 2011 and the International Children’s Peace Prize in 2013, and she was short-
listed for TIME Magazine’s “Person of the Year”.
For more information about the event, contact Bob Weinfeld at (972) 814-6214 or [email protected].

BROTHERHOOD
Brotherhood Board Meeting
March 18
7:15pm Boardroom
All Brotherhood Members Invited to Attend.
The Shalom Award Dinner on February 8 was a truly remarkable evening, but don't just take my word for it! Read what some of the attendees had to say:
"In Temple Shalom's fifty years we have held many fine events and programs, and tonight's would have to rank among the best we have ever offered. Brotherhood's Shalom Award dinner was seamless, and brought untold prestige and benefits not simply for Brotherhood but for Temple Shalom."
"I have never been more proud of my affiliation with the Temple Shalom Brotherhood than I was tonight…not only was the recognition of this talented and wonderful leader a well-presented honor, but also we launched a gift to the entire North Texas region by saying to all who will hear that we are providing a major voice in the combatting of hate and intolerance. The Museum is not just a Jewish institution that we recognize. It is now, and will become even more so, an important part of our North Texas community’s awareness."
"The level of this event was on a par with the finest we’ve experienced, from the decorum of the event to the feeling of brotherhood . . . Events like tonight and, hopefully, similar ones in the future, can have immeasurable impact and benefit to both Temple Shalom and Brotherhood in many ways, including attracting new temple members as well as showcasing Temple Shalom to the greater Dallas community in a very positive way."
There are so many people to thank for planning and executing this event that it is not possible to list their names individually. The list includes Brotherhood members, Sisterhood members, Temple board members, Temple staff and other members of the congregation. On behalf of the entire congregation, I salute all of them for an incredible effort!
Yasher Koach to all involved.

Temple Shalom is committed to preserving the future of our congregation for

our religion, our Temple, and our people.
A bequest can easily be established by adding a simple codicil to your will.
Additionally, many other options exist to leave a legacy for Temple Shalom.
