'Betsy Jane Jones was Born August 5, 1905 in (Byron, looming.
There were five girls and three Boys. Eva, Jimmy, Qrace, Edward, Jane,
(Ralph, Letita, and <Beutak\ There parents were 'Edward 'Wheatley Jones
and Lucy Qrace Tucker. The Tuckers and Jones' came from England and
'Wales aBout 1860. Mom was named after her grandmother, (Betsy V.
Lerwitl Tucker. Mother s grandparents joined the Church in England
and came by ship with many other famides. Theyjoined in the hand
cart company traveling to Salt Lake City.
She went to school in Towell, 'Wyoming. Tier father drove the
school Bus many years. Mom's father was a very strict father. Me
didn't (ike his daughters to date But it was very hardfor him to watch
them alC the time. Its Bun told that Mom and her sister Qrace would
sneak, out at night and meet some fellows. I think, Mom and her sisters
and Brothers hadfun growing up. They were a very good lookingfamily.
Lajayette 'Don (Parkin was Born OctoBer IS, 1907 at Sunshine,
'Wyoming. 9fo mother andfather were 'Don Carlos (Parkin and Jeannie
Slack. (Don Carlos 'family came from England. 'Dad had one Brother
and two half Brothers andfour half sisters. 'Dad always felt responsible
for his younger Brother Owen. 'Dad was a very independent man, it has
Been rumored he left home when he was 12. Tie had many experiences
just living on his own. Tk lived with some monks in the state of'Washington for quite some time.
One of his half sisters has said he was always so kind to them
after he was married They stayed a lot with 'Dad and Mom. 'Dad
loved riding and working with, horses. Tie always went to see Momwhite on horse Back.
'Dad and a friend Matt Hdng decided to go to Mutual one night.
Tie looked across the room and saw Mom with her Big Blue eyes and a
quick.smile from her. 'Dad was in love. Tk told Matt right then and
there that she was the one he was going to many. Less than a year
Cater Mom and (Dad were married, September 17, 192$ at Cody,
'Wyoming. Mom hadjust turned 20 and (Dad would Be IS in a couple
of months. (Dad often talked about getting married in overalls. Mom's
(Dad (grandpa Jones) drove them to Cody. (Dad worfydfor different
farmers when they were first married.
was their first Born. She was Born at garland, "Wyoming,
was a 'circus' BaBy Because the doctor was at the circus, so from
then on she was fatown as the 'circus BaBy'.
from then they moved to Salt Lake City where they always said
they almost starved to death. 'While there Mom had a terriBle ear
infection in which one side of her hair turnedgrey, jofkin was Born
there.
from there they moved to Cowley, 'Wyoming where (PhyClis was
Born. I always thought they were disappointed that I ((PhyCGs) wasn't a
Boy.
from there they moved to (Penrose where (Dad andMomfarmed
'Edward Jones'farm. Mom had a cat namedSnowball that she loved
very much. She was lost in the move. S&th herded cows down By the
river in (Penrose. Clyde was Born in QarCand with the doctor coming to
the house. 'What a ceCeBration--finally a Boy.
One winter they lived on pheasants only. 'Dad was a very good
shot, he used a .22 rifle he hit those pheasants in the head every time.
It was a very hard winter with no money. Mom and (Rp-th soCd apples
door to door at 25t a sackz (Ruth's chore was to go to each door. Times
were hard.
joAnn and (Rjith started school at (Powed. Then when I started,
we all went to 'Byron.
Mom and (Dad drew a homestead in Whistle Creek*. I would say
about five mites from Qrandpa Jones' farm, They had to stay in a tent
for some nights. I thinly John Lewis Buitt their Reuse, which was two
Bedrooms, a faring room and kitchen, We moved with a hay wagon and
horse. The piano was ready hard to move.
I remember acres and acres of Beans mother harrowed Behind a
team of horses day after day. Ifiey had a horse named OQng, Vfath Coved
and the horse even likfid her. We didn't have tractors at this time. We
mitk&d cows, every one milk&d accept *Daddy. 9te woutd hide Behind the
hay stack, and come around when we were about finished
JoAnn and I took, big sacks of potatoes and carrots to school so
we would Be able to eat in the lunch room.
Jack.was Born in 'Whistle Creek* More rejoicing, 'Sutah was
there with mother. (Daddy said that they got one boy (with Clyde) so
maybe they could try it again to get another--and they did/
Jim brought us a horse named ginger, he woutd chase Jo&nn
and I. (Daddy would yelt and make us catch her anyway. I spent many
days herding cows during the summer. JoAnn stayed in the house and
cook&t. eUhat's why she is such agood cook.
'Daddy and Mother taught us how to work- 'But we hadfun
also. We went to dances about once a month at the. Whistle Creek, Clxib
house. There were pie suppers and no matter who asfyd us to dance we
had toot Some of them were oldguys.
'But to get there was another thing. We had to go put on
'Dad's socks, shoes, and putt him up. I think, he made agame of it.
Then he had more fun than anyone.
They made sure we went to a Cot of schoolgames. JoAnn was a
cheer leader one year so we went to aU the games. She was ready acutie.
I remember when we got the first tractor. It was a very Big
event.
hadgood neighbors Ortin and Clara (Baker wen ourfavorite.
'But there was Jerry andAnne QulUan. Matt andJohn J$ng were good
friends. The Jarwelts and many more.
Qrandpa and Qrandma (Parkin came over about every other
Sunday. So we got to know them, We loved 'Bulah andJim to come
they were always so much fun. And it was always an exciting time
when relatives from Salt Lake City came.
(Remember the chicken fries they would have after a dance.
clean andfry. The pinochle card parties sometimes lasting all night. So
muchfun ... Mom and 'Dad took. Clyde and Jack, fishing and camping.
One time the rains came while camping making the quilts so wet and
heavy that they almost didn't get down the mountain with them in the
car.
Most of all I remember Mom and (Dad were such hard workers.
Their homestead went Bad, so they exchanged the landfor land in Idaho.
'By that time (Rjith, JoAnn and I were alC married and living in different
places.
So Mom and Dad and tfie Boys packed up and moved to Idaho.
Iguess the trip to Idaho was a story alt By itself. (Ihe land in Idaho
was good. They Built a nice house, the Best they had ever lived in.
Clyde and Jacfifinished their schooling in (Rupert, Idaho, limes were
hard in (Rupert also, the land was covered with sage Brush. AtC their life
they worked very hard.
They win good parents. They never Believed in spanking.
Although $o!Axin and I got one with a dust pan. Once Clyde and I had
to walk, home for fighting in the car. It was HoAnn's fault also, But she
didn't have to walk. But they Babied her Because she was so small.
Daddy was an (Elder. Mother served in many church callings
such as ReliefSociety (President (in 'Whistle Creek} and teacher in
(Primary andSunday School. She also was a ReliefSociety visiting
teacher. She cleaned many houses and took, care of many new BaBies.
Mother took, ad of her church callings very serious. Mother helped a lot
ofpeople. She was always there when some one needed something. She
was very out spok&n But very kind andfair minded. She took.care of
herfather and in-laws; going to their homes at least twice a week.and
sometimes more depending when they needed her.
'Daddy was very soft hearted. Ole loved his family. Die was
very generous. Mother liked to dress nice; she also liked us to dress
nicely and in the style of the time.
'Both (Dad and Mom showedgreat faith when she had open
heart surgery. O\(pt many were done Before hers. Then the time (Daddy
was Blown out of the camper above Sun Valley and was Burnt Badly.
I'm sure that was really hard on him also But Utter he had to have part
of his lung removed. It took.great courage andfaith But also a love for
us kids.
They also loved their grand kids. I think, they treated each one
as someone very special. I'm sure each one of you have many memories
ofgrowing, Being with them and these are just a few that I wrote
down.
