Traditional rolling stock
is being replaced everywhere.
High-speed services are
booming in Japan and
Europe. International freight
is increasing 25% yearly.
The European railroad supply
industry now has a 60%
share of the world market.
Its annual sales are
approximately $16 billion,
and its order books are full.
With the global market in rail
systems growing by 5%-6%
a year, competition is fierce
in the industry.

In this new rail era,
marked by liberalization
and privatization, increased
profitability has been
a growing concern. Since
rolling stock is a long-term,
strategic investment, both
manufacturers and operators
are demanding far more
from cable suppliers.
To move ahead manufacturers and operators must:
• Find expert partners to co-design and manufacture complete
cabling systems
• Intensify R&D to develop light-weight, adaptable, modular
solutions
• Incorporate IT cabling to maximize rail’s reliability, safety and
comfort
• Install common, interoperable systems to meet international
standards
• Ensure public safety and protection of equipment through
fire-safe cabling
• Cut costs through cable durability, easy retrofitting, and low
maintenance

Experts predict that
in 10 years, rolling stock
must be 50% cheaper
to buy and maintain,
and achieve 30% energy
savings.
Nexans expertise in
cables and components
can help you achieve
this goal.
Nexans produces a full range
of data and energy cables
and components found in
modern rolling stock, from
thinwall technique up to
45kV. Our catalogue includes

High-temperature
power cables for
locomotives and drives
To deal with extreme
temperatures and weight
constraints (especially for
ultra high-speed trains),
Nexans has developed a new
generation of compact silicon
cables which can operate
in temperatures of up to
140°C (tested to 180°C).
• Used on France’s highly
successful TGV trains, our
cables have been able to
achieve 10% to 20% weight
reduction for the 2 tons of
cabling which are standard
for this type of locomotive.
Rolling stock
power cables
Nexans provides a wide
range of flexible,
Class 5, tinned copper
monoconductors to meet
the power needs of today’s
locomotives and drives.
This includes cables that
can handle 3-phase drives,
with variable frequency.
• To assure protection
in the special operating
environments of both electric
and diesel locomotives,
Nexans has developed a
special polyolefin coating
against mineral oil in electric
motors and a non-halogen-
free CSP coating against
diesel fuel.
HV connection cables,
bushings, connectors
To carry electricity from the
roof-mounted pantograph
to the locomotive’s
transformer, Nexans
manufactures flexible high-
voltage cables (up to 25kV)
which are sold as a pre-
mounted, pre-tested set,
with bushings and connectors.
For years now, these sets
have been highly rated by
manufacturers like ADtranz.
• Nexans’ 700 series
connectors, extensively
used on trains in Europe,
China and Australia,
are now used by British Rail
on their locomotives.
They are known to be light,
compact, vibration-proof
and extremely safe,
with a 25 year life-span.
Standard and
thin-walled, control
cables - Flamex Wires
Nexans’ wide range of
control cables (with or without
shielding) provide energy
for communications, public
address, automatic doors,
lighting, etc. Where space is
limited, our thin-walled
designs have a tough but
flexible high-tech coating.
• Our clients are the who’s
who of the rolling stock
business, including major
constructors like ADtranz,
Alstom, Bombardier
and Siemens, in addition
to numerous cable
manufacturers serving the
railboard industry.

Databus cables -
Flamex Twinas
To assure surveillance and
a video liaison between
both extremities of a train,
Nexans has developed
a copper, twisted-pair data
cable which is made
to the highest standards of
guaranteed impedance.
• Polyethylene foam
insulation guarantees low
attenuation, while precise
manufacturing keeps
impedance at constant levels.
Like all other cables,
it is halogen-free (“0”ZH)
for reasons of public safety.
Coaxial cables -
Flamex RG and KX
Also for video connections,
we have developed a
special twinax coaxial cable,
which combines two cores
(copper with a tin coating)
within a flexible dielectric
coating, a shield and a jacket
(to guarantee impedance).
• Nexans coaxial cables
come in various sizes and
scopes of attenuation,
and have special sheathings
for safety, flexibility and
crush resistance, making
them both easy-to-install
and durable.

Optical fiber cables
Instead of a twisted-pair bus
cable, rolling-stock
manufacturers can use our
high-performance multimode
optical fiber cable to carry
vital onboard data.
• In the long term,
optical fiber offers many
important advantages,
including no electromagnetic
contamination (EMC), very
high data speeds, excellent
attenuation, compactness
and low weight in a confined
environment.
Harnesses
Rolling stock harnesses
consolidate wires, connectors
and identitification systems
not only in the locomotive,
but in drives and blak boxes
throughout the train. Nexans
designs, manufactures,
pre-mounts and end-tests a
complete family of harnesses.
• For the high-speed,
multifunction German
BR 101 locomotive, Nexans
worked closely with ADtranz
to custom-design a complete
system of cables and
harnesses which greatly
simplified end assembly.
Jumper cables -
Flamex M6 Jumper
Short jumper cables between
cars carry information
and energy in an open,
moving environment. Nexans
jumpers use a special
construction and materials
for high flexibility, strength
and durability.
• Nexans jumper cables
have won acceptance
worldwide. They are used
on all Alstom rolling stock
and are especially
appreciated for ultra-speed
trains in France, South
Korea, Spain, etc.

Cables (CTC) made of
multiple enamelled copper
conductors (class 180/200)
or impregnated glass fiber
yarn/glass polyester-blended
yarn copper conductors. In
addition, the cable (including
single copper conductors)
can be insulated with
stabilized cellulose paper and
polyaramide aromatic paper.
• Our plant in Arolsen,
Germany, specializes
in enamelled wire which is
used by major rolling stock
manufacturers, including
ABB, Alstom, Siemens, etc.

All our cables are
halogen-free (“0” ZH)
To protect people and
equipment, Nexans rolling-
stock cables are halogen-
free. This means that they are
flame and fire-retardant,
emit low smoke and toxicity,
and are non-corrosive in
the event of fire.
• With Cenelec
(the European Electrical
Board/working group 12),
which specifies new
standards for rolling stock
cables and their properties,
Nexans has been deeply
involved in developing and
testing new materials
and designs to optimize
safety at every level.
Version 3.3 rolling stock DEF25 15/01/02 11:42 Page 10
Nexans is committed
to co-operation at
all levels, especially with
a chosen group of
co-suppliers. We want
to share information,
pass on expertise,
and transfer technology
wherever possible.
Partnership
We are adept at working
with a group of suppliers,
including electrical drive
system and equipment
manufacturers, to develop
a new generation of efficient,
light-weight, modular
trains, thus reducing costs
and the number of vehicle
designs.
Integration
Wherever possible,
we integrate designs and
develop new interfaces
both to make installation
easier in end-assembly,
but also to facilitate control
and maintenance procedures
when the vehicles are in
operation.
Interoperability
To assure interoperability
in equipment specifications
and safety standards,
we have worked closely with
regulatory committees to
assure both modularity and
open standards. Our cables
are designed to fit into
rolling stock worldwide.

Security
Our halogen-free (or
0-halogen) special cables
cover virtually every rolling
stock application; while
our data cables are ideal
for monitoring components,
advanced fault diagnosis
and data logging, so as to
pre-empt failures before
they occur.
R&D
As IT moves onboard
for intelligent suspension,
fault detection, control,
maintenance and
communications, we are
developing new integrated
data/energy systems to help
drive down costs and
maximize environmental
benefits of rail.
Product support
Manufacturing in more
than 20 countries
and operating in more than
60 countries, we are
committed to delivering what
you need where you need it.
Our “no-maintenance”
policy means that there should
be nothing to do between
major overhauls, apart
from replacing components
subject to wear.
Version 3.3 rolling stock DEF25 15/01/02 11:42 Page 12
In the rolling stock business,
the technology of steel-on-
steel, driven by electric or
diesel motors, will not change
in the near future. However,
trains will have to be cheaper
to buy and operate, with new
levels of safety, comfort, and
environmental-friendliness.
Much of this will be achieved
by technological advances:
intelligent suspension,
more efficient motors and
transformers, composite
bodyshells, lighter electronic
equipment and cabling, and
IT-based onboard devices.
Experts say that in 10 years
time, electrical equipment
will have to weigh a quarter
of today’s, and be equally
reduced in size.

who is not just providing off-the-shelf goods, but working
closely with you to develop:
• New materials and designs
• Lower life-cycle costs
• Cross-border interoperability
• Data/energy system integration
• Manufacturing and retrofitting ease
