2009-10 Randolph-Macon Women’s Basketball
Randolph-Macon is an undergraduate,
coeducational college of the liberal arts. The
purpose of a Randolph-Macon education is
to develop the mind and the character
of its students. They are challenged to
communicate effectively, to think analytically
and critically, to experience and appreciate
the creative process, to develop qualities
of leadership, and to synthesize what they
know with who they are.
At Randolph-Macon College the liberal
arts constitute a comprehensive edu-
cational opportunity. The curriculum
includes exposure both to broad per-
spectives and specifi c concepts. Stu-
dents explore the natural and social
sciences, the arts, and the humanities,
while they also achieve a deeper un-
derstanding of the single discipline in
which they major. They are guided in
this endeavor by a faculty of
teacher-scholars who are dedicated to the liberal arts and active in their professional disciplines and
in the extra-curricular life of the campus.
At Randolph-Macon the maturation and testing of the skills, values, and character required for a lifetime
of challenges extends beyond the classroom. Students are encouraged to meet with faculty both socially
and intellectually, and they have the opportunity to participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities.
Interaction within the college community is assured by a residential environment and an enrollment of
approximately one thousand. Located in Ashland, Virginia Randolph-Macon College offers a curriculum
and a cultural life enriched by the close proximity of Metropolitan Richmond and Washington, D.C.
A Randolph-Macon education conveys a sense of life defi ned by historical continuity and ethical
responsibility. Founded by Methodists in 1830, Randolph-Macon is an independent college that retains
a relationship with the United Methodist Church. Through this living tie the College draws strength
from a religious tradition that nurtures creative social change and personal accountability.
Randolph-Macon believes that a liberal arts education challenges the intellect, imagination, and
character. Graduates of the college have the capacity to realize their potential as professionals, leaders,
and lifelong learners. The comprehensive nature of a liberal arts education at Randolph-Macon College
prepares students to respond to the changing career opportunities and to meet life’s challenges with
confi dence, enthusiasm, and ethical awareness.

It is my pleasure and honor to welcome all of our Yel-low Jacket fans and other guests to this beautiful campus. Randolph-Macon has a dynamic athletic program boasting 15 varsity sports and is led by our outstanding ath-letic director, Denis Kanach, and a dedicated and talented group of coaches including our women’s basketball coach, Carroll LaHaye. As a member of the NCAA Division III and Old Dominion Athletic Conference, we are proud of our long history in American intercollegiate athletics. Our academic program provides one of the fi nest educational experiences available anywhere in the world, with programs like our unique and popular First Year Ex-perience, January term, and our study abroad, internship and undergraduate research programs. And the special “moments of connection” that occur with our faculty, staff, coaches and students help prepare our students for real-life experiences and create memories that will last a lifetime. To our alumni and friends, I want to personally thank you for your loyalty and support of our college and I invite you to come back and visit us often! On behalf of all of us here at the college, welcome to Randolph-Macon! Go Yellow Jackets!!

2009-10 Randolph-Macon Women’s Basketball
 ODAC Champions: 1996, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007,2009
Carroll LaHaye completed her 27th
season as head women’s basketball
coach at Randolph-Macon College in
2008-09.
In 2008-09, LaHaye and her staff
mentored R-MC to its third ODAC
championship in four years and its fi fth
championship in the last seven cam-
paigns. During the 2008-09 season,
LaHaye reached a milestone with her
450th career coaching win. She fi n-
ished the season with 453 career wins
good for 18th all-time in NCAA Division
III Women’s Basketball.
The Yellow Jackets have posted seven consecutive
20 win seasons and over the course of the last 13 sea-
sons, LaHaye’s teams have produced a 273-92 (.748)
overall record.
In 2007-08, LaHaye led the program to its sixth straight
20+ win season and a national ranking as high as No.12
during the year.
In 2006-07 the Yellow Jackets became just the second
team in the history of the Old Dominion Athletic Confer-
ence to capture three consecutive league championships.
LaHaye and her squad then went on to the NCAA Tourna-
ment where they advanced to the “Sweet 16” for the third
straight year and for the fourth time in LaHaye’s tenure.
LaHaye reached a personal milestone on February
10, 2007 when the Jackets topped Randolph-Macon
Woman’s College 63-33. With the victory, LaHaye became
just the 21st coach in the history of Division III Women’s
Basketball to reach 400 career wins. Over the last four
seasons, LaHaye has led the program to an 106-16 over-
all mark and a 73-7 regular season ODAC record.
In 2005-06, R-MC captured its second consecutive
ODAC title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the
third time in four years. The Yellow Jackets ended their
season at 28-3 after advancing to the “Elite Eight” of the
national tournament.
The 2004-05 Yellow Jacket squad was arguably the
best-ever in the history of the program. Accomplishments
included: winning the Old Dominion Athletic Conference
(ODAC) tournament for the second time in three years;
fi nishing with the most wins in the program’s history at
30-2; becoming the fi rst-ever women’s
team in the ODAC to go 20-0; advanc-
ing to the NCAA tournament Final Four
for the fi rst time in the history of both
R-MC and ODAC women’s basket-
ball; fi nishing second in the NCAAs;
achieving the longest winning streak
in the history of the program at 23
games; and fi nishing ranked #2 in the
nation and #1 in the South Region.
LaHaye was named the ODAC
Coach of the Year and the Virginia
Sports Information Directors state
Coach of the Year, and she earned her
200th conference victory early in the season. She was
also recognized for her dedication as a faculty member
at Randolph-Macon by receiving the Samuel Nelson Gray
Distinguished Professor Award at the college’s 2005 hon-
ors convocation in the spring.
In 2003-04, Randolph-Macon fi nished 20-8 overall and
16-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC),
made it to the championship game of the conference
tournament, and was ranked in the top 10 in the NCAA
Division III South Region during the season as well as in
the top 15 in the nation by DIII News in the preseason.
LaHaye’s 2002-03 squad was 20-10 overall, won the
ODAC tournament, and advanced to the second round of
the NCAA Division III tournament following a fi rst-round
win at home. LaHaye earned her 300th career victory
during the campaign, and she was named the Richmond
Times-Dispatch newspaper’s Virginia state Coach of the
Year.
After guiding her 1997-98 team to a record of 21-6,
a fi rst-place fi nish in the ODAC, and the NCAA tourna-
ment, LaHaye was honored as the Women’s Basketball
Coaches Association (WBCA)/IKON District V Coach of
the Year.
In 1998-99 the Yellow Jackets fi nished 23-5 overall,
won the ODAC regular season championship with a 19-1
record, and made an appearance in the conference title
game for the second time in four seasons. LaHaye was
named the ODAC Coach of the Year for the third time in
six years, and was also the VaSID Small College Coach
of the Year for Divisions II-III. ¡ ¢ £ ¤ £ ¥ ¤ ¦ § §
¨2009-10 Randolph-Macon Women’s Basketball
During 1995-96, LaHaye’s team produced one
of the most successful seasons in the history of the
program, with a 28-2 record. The Yellow Jackets
won two games in their fi rst-ever appearance in
the NCAA Division III tournament, advancing to the
“Sweet Sixteen.” That season LaHaye was named
the ODAC Coach of the Year, the WBCA/Converse
District V Coach of the Year, and the VaSID college
Division II-III Coach of the Year.
A native of Maine, LaHaye earned a bachelor’s
degree cum laude in business management-rec-
reation from the University of Maine-Machias in
1977. In addition to being an excellent student, she
was a standout performer in basketball and volley-
ball.
In addition to her other recent coaching honors,
in 1998-99 LaHaye was selected by the American
Women’s Sports Federation as one of eight Divi-
sion III All-American coaches. Her sound philoso-
phy is recognized by others in the fi eld who strive
to have outstanding student-athletes in their pro-
grams who can compete in the classroom as well
as on the court and receive recognition for both.
Besides being recognized herself, LaHaye has
also had many of her players receive post-season
honors from the NCAA, American Women’s Sports
Federation, the Virginia Sports Information Direc-
tors, and the ODAC. Several Yellow Jackets have
been named All-Americans, both academic and
athletic.
As a coach, LaHaye feels that her players can
achieve success and meet individual goals in other
phases of college life while participating in an in-
tercollegiate sport. She demands top performance
academically, and this is refl ected in the excellent
students that she has been able to attract to Ran-
dolph-Macon. Many of her players have achieved
Dean’s List status as a result of their commitment
to academics

The Randolph-Macon Women’s Bas-ketball team has won 45 games over the last two seasons and look to build on that success in the 2009-10 campaign. R-MC returns nine letter winners including three starters from the 2008-09 squad which fi nished 23-6. Last season the Yellow Jackets won their fi fth ODAC title in seven years, earning a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Head Coach Carroll LaHaye will be at the helm for her 28th season for Randolph-Macon. LaHaye posts a 453-278 coaching record which ranks 18th all-time in NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball history. 2008-09 ODAC Player of the Year Molly Ariail returns to Randolph-Macon for her senior season. Ariail led the Yel-low Jackets with 17.7 points per game and 8.8 rebounds a game. A DIII News All-American last year, Ariail has been named the DIII News Preseason Player of the Year for the 2009-10 season. Ariail’s classmate, Renee Stein, will return to the starting fi ve after averaging fi ve points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists a game in 2008-09. The 5-10 senior is a versatile asset with the ability to play both guard or forward for the Yellow Jackets. Junior Katie Williams averaged 5.8 points per game in her sophomore sea-son. Williams, a three point threat, shot 35.6 percent from beyond the arc in the 2008-09 season. Sophomore Maggie Roy saw signifi -cant time off the bench as a freshman, averaging 8.6 points per game. Roy shot over 40 percent from three and distributed the ball well, averaging 2.3 assists a game. Fellow classmates, Jillian Asay and Molly Brown, also provided valuable play-ing time in their freshmen seasons. Asay and Brown, both 5-11, are big threats down low on the offensive and defensive ends of the fl oor. Asay compliments her
inside play with three point shooting abil-ity, making her diffi cult to defend. Sophomore Taylor Wieczorek provided a spark off the bench for the Yellow Jack-ets in her freshman season. Wieczorek averaged 3.1 points per game in just nine minutes a game on the court. Jennifer O’Briant and Stephanie Grune both return for their junior season. O’Briant earned seven starts last season and looks to build on her role from last season. Grune played in 24 games in the 2008-09 season and will challenge for playing time in the paint. The Yellow Jackets welcome three new faces to the roster for the 2009-10 season. Jordan Cantrell, Madison Dulaney, and Ashley Jones will represent Randolph-Macon’s class of 2013 The biggest question for the Yellow Jackets in the 2009-10 season is replac-ing All-ODAC guard Amanda Hiltunen and All-ODAC forward Lindsay Riesbeck. Hiltunen ran the offense last season and averaged 13.6 points per game along with 4.9 assists per game. On defense, Hil-tunen led R-MC with 75 steals. Riesback complimented Ariail in the paint, scoring 10.5 points per game and averaging 5.9 boards.
