Built over a century ago, we all owe a debt of gratitude to the Irish faithful who were the first to call this church their parish. For apart from the countless sacrifices made by that first generation of faithful to build a suitable house of prayer and divine worship for the greater glory of God, this beautiful church would not exist. Our beautiful stained-glass windows, perhaps the most stunning feature of the church, have been newly restored. Rendered in the Munich Pictorial style, they depict scenes from the life of Christ as well as images of various angels and saints. The careful observer will discern elements from the Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine styles which together make up the style known as Venetian Gothic. Bishop Paprocki consecrated the new main and side altars in 2012 and established the church as a personal parish on New Years Day, 2014. The liturgy celebrated at St. Rose follows the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite, and employs primarily the ancient Latin language. On Sundays, translations of both the ordinary and propers of the Mass are provided. To follow daily Mass you may wish to invest in a daily Latin English Missal available at the rectory or download an app like iMass. This week we celebrate the Ember Days of Advent. Ember days go back to Antiquity. Contrary to common opinion, they were not suppressed with the 1969 Liturgical Reform and they are still mentioned in the 2011 English edition of the Ordinary form of the Roman Missal: “45. On Rogation and Ember Days the Church is accustomed to entreat the Lord for the various needs of humanity, especially for the fruits of the earth and for human labor, and to give thanks to him publicly. 46. In order that the Rogation Days and Ember Days may be adapted to the different regions and different needs of the faithful, the Conferences of Bishops should arrange the time and manner in which they are held.” From The Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year and the Roman Calendar.

The latest document on the question of Ember Days is a Statement Issued by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops on November 18, 1966: Pastoral Statement on Penance and Abstinence: “ 17. Vigils and Ember Days, as most now know, no longer oblige to fast and abstinence. However, the liturgical renewal and the deeper appreciation of the joy of the holy days of the Christian year will, we hope, result in a renewed appreciation as to why our forefathers spoke of "a fast before a feast." We impose no fast before any feast-day, but we suggest that the devout will find greater Christian joy in the feasts of the liturgical calendar if they freely bind themselves, for their own motives and in their own spirit of piety, to prepare for each Church festival by a day of particular self-denial, penitential prayer and fasting.” Thus the church does not oblige the faithful to make penance on these days any longer but suggest them to do so.

Originally, Ember Days were 3 days (Wednesday, Friday and Saturday) set apart in each of the four seasons (winter, spring, summer and fall) for fasting, abstinence and prayer. Father John F. Sullivan from The Externals of the Catholic Church explains the origin of the name: “These days, sometimes called the Quarter Tenses (Latin, “Quatuor Tempora,” the four times), occur at intervals of about 3 months… Why are they called “Ember Days”? The words has nothing to do with embers or ashes. It may be from the Anglo-Saxon ymbren, a circle or revolution; or it may be a corruption of quatuor tempora through Dutch, Danish, or German.

“The observance of the Ember Days, a most venerable feature of the liturgical calendar, dates back to early Roman antiquity (they are older than Advent). Pope Leo I (c. 450) has left a series of beautiful sermons for these days. Originally the Ember Days were an occasion of thanksgiving for the three great harvests of wheat, grapes, and olives — all very meaningful symbols employed by the liturgy.” Pius Parsch, The Church’s Year of Grace, Volume 1

Each season has a different focus depending on

harvests in the Mediterranean seasons. In spring, during the week after Ash Wednesday, we give thanks for the rebirth of

nature and for the gift of light. In summer, within the octave of Pentecost, we give thanks for the wheat crop. In autumn,

within the third week of September, we give thanks for the grape

harvest. In winter, within the 3rd week of Advent, we give

thanks for the olive crop. Olive oil being used in the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, holy orders, and anointing of the sick.

NEW ADVENT / CHRISTMAS CDS AVAILABLE IN KIOSK

Advent: Rethinking the Season and The Mystery of Christmas are now available in vestibule.

Advent: Rethinking the Season Unlike most other seasons, it’s a season that isn’t about itself, but is instead about preparing for Christmas. But that reality often gets lost in the shuffle and stress of trying to find all the right gifts, decorations, and dinner ingredients. In this talk, Dr. Tim Gray uses storytelling and the readings of the Old Testament to explain that we need to live the ‘pre-season’ of Advent well, so we can be prepared to welcome and receive the greatest gift God the Father wants to give us at Christmas: His Son, Jesus.

$4 donation per CD is requested.

RECOLLECTION FOR MEN THURSDAY DECEMBER 20TH AT 7 PM

There will be a Recollection for men at the St. Rose of Lima Parish Hall. The Recollection will begin at 7:00 p.m.

A talk will be given on the Birth of Christ and the Significance of, "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us". The depth of symbolism, the significance of the timing, the fulfillment of prophecy, and a seemingly endless number of items of importance surround the astounding moment when the God of the universe, "... emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, ..." Philippians, 6:7

We will attempt to explore some of the most important and most interesting topics to try to help enrich the significance of Christmas!

In addition to the Men's Recollection, there is Adoration and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 6:00 pm at St Rose. Several of us will gather there before we meet for the Recollection. All Catholic Men 16 and older are invited.

laundry of the servers’ black cassocks. If we could

have 1 or 2 more volunteers, we would have a nice size

team! Cassocks do not require ironing! Simply wash,

put in dryer for 3-5 minutes, hang on hangers, and

you’re done!

Please consider helping with this much needed task.

They are laundered only 3-4 times per year.
