Online composition measurements for pulping and recovery liquors have typically been a great challenge for pulp mills. Traditional measurement techniques such as conductivity, density meters, refractometers, bubble tubes, etc. have had some limited success but suffer from a myriad of operational issues. These include but are not limited to scaling and measurement disturbances due to liquor matrix composition. These devices measure a single property of the liquor and infer the desired measurement from this data. Variations in the overall composition of the liquor can cause frequent recalibration of these devices. Automated titration units were developed to deal with this issue. These devices, however, suffer from high maintenance requirements along with a very high total installed cost.

Near Infrared (NIR) and Ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy can be used to address all of the above mentioned challenges. These methods can provide reliable and accurate online measurements for liquors throughout the entire liquor cycle.

For the past 20 years R. E. Hodges, LLC has been developing and refining online and lab based analyzers based on these spectroscopic techniques that provide full compositional analysis of white, green and black liquors at all locations in the pulping and recovery process.

DURALYZER-2 TM is the latest incarnation of of the DURALYZER TM series of online and lab based liquor analyzers. DURALYZER-2 TM features many improvements and innovations over the prior DURALYZER TM generations.

Two key DURALYZER-2 TM innovations include a proprietary high cycle life sample valve and a small footprint completely self contained NIR spectrometer.

This valve is a plunger style valve which uses the best elements of gate valves and ball valves. All wetted parts are 316 stainless steel. The spectrometer is implemented using a scanning monochromator design with a miniature onboard Linux computer controlling the optical system.

DURALYZER-2 TM Principle Of Operation

The DURALYZER-2 TM black liquor trim analyzer uses NIR transmission for determining composition of white and black liquors. Light from a broadband QTH (Quartz Tungsten Halogen) bulb is projected through the sample under test. The sample is tested in a large volume transmission cell with sapphire windows. Light is transmitted through the sample that is in the gap between the sapphire windows. The exiting light is collected with a lens and projected into a fiber optic cable which is coupled to the spectrometer. The spectrometer then measures the light intensity at approximately 1000 discrete wavelengths in the range of 1000nm – 2200nm. The resulting data generates the spectral signature of the sample. This spectral signature contains all of the composition information of the sample. The spectral signature of the sample is then interpreted by the onboard computer to determine composition information. The analysis results are then transmitted to the DCS via MODBUS. The following figure shows a summary of this process.

DURALYZER-2 TM Sampling System

The sampling system is tasked with consistently delivering representative samples from the process into the sample cell. The DURALYZER-2 TM sampling system has many unique and innovative features that ensures this function is carried out reliably with minimal maintenance overhead. The sampling system is designed to operate as a flow through bypass loop that extracts samples from different points (up to 8 for standard configuration) and returns the sample back into the process. For non pressurized lines, a novel vacuum system is used to produce the driving force for sample flow through the sample cell. An automated acid cleaning system ensures that sample lines, sample cell and internal tubing stay scale free. All sampling, cleaning and sample analysis functions are controlled by the analyzer’s onboard computer requiring no external DCS control for analyzer operations.

DURALYZER-2 TM Software

The DURALYZER-2 TM black liquor trim analyzer has a complete suite of software modules with a familiar

Windows interface. These modules include operator interface, system configuration, calibration functions, diagnostic functions and communication functions. The operator interface module provides the real time sample point sequencing and sample analysis functions. Scrolling text windows display detailed information about analyzer operations at any given time. In addition, internal analyzer sensors and alarms are also displayed. The system configuration module provides a user interface for naming sample points and components, defining sample point sequencing, defining the MODBUS register map and editing sampling system parameters on a per sample point basis. The calibration module provides the data collection functions and mathematical tools to develop the relations between spectral signatures and composition data. The communication module takes the analysis results and transfers them to the DCS via MODBUS data. MODBUS registers and bits can also be defined for analyzer alarms and current analyzer operations. The following figures show typical screenshots from these software modules.
