001. AL-FATIHA - THE OPENING
Section1
NARRATIVEAL FATIHA - OPENING OF THE BOOK
1. 4 AWESOME ATTRIBUTES OF DIVINITY
In search of Divinity, you discover the Compassionate and Merciful Master who is the Owner & King of all affairs. Your soul in awe says - All praise and thanks (HAMD) belong to Him. He is:
1. RABB - MASTERThe Master who arranges the affairs of all Creation and guides them to their full potential step by step. 2. AL RAHMAAN* - COMPASSIONATEThe All Encompassing Incredibly Merciful who is Compassionate to all Creation. 3. AL RAHEEM* - MERCIFULHe who is particularly Merciful to those who believe. 4. MAALIKI YAWM AD DEEN - OWNER & CONTROLLERHe owns and controls the micro and the macro and it is to Him alone to whom one is accountable.
*Al Rahmaan and Al Raheem refer to the two aspects of Divine Mercy. When two similar words are placed together, it is to accentuate their difference. The root word is Rahima – Mercy from which the word rahm (womb) comes (that which provides everything). Al Rahmaan is like the light of the sun that illuminates the world and Al Raheem is like a particular ray that touches a creature.
2. PLEA REQUESTING TO BE HIS SLAVES AND HELP TO REACH ONE’S FULL POTENTIAL The knowledge of the awesomeness of Allah leads you to action. A request where the heart cries out wanting to be His ‘abd (slave) and continuing to beseech for help in reaching one’s full potential (Siraat Al Mustaqeem**).
** Siraat Al Mustaqeem is the vertical path of ascent towards Divinity.
3. THE RESPONSE FROM DIVINITY TO THE REQUEST FOR HELP
Divinity replies with instructions to:i. Follow the path of those whom He has blessedii. Not to follow those on whom there is angeriii. Nor to follow those who are lost
THE REST OF THE 113 chapters (suwer) of the Qur’an are an exposition of this verse (aya).

NARRATIVEAL JINN - THE JINN
1. FEEDBACK FROM THE JINN ABOUT THE QUR’AN 1-19
Before the revelation of the Qur’an, the Jinn used to eavesdrop on snatches of information they heard in the lowest heavens between the angels. Suddenly they found that they could no longer intercept the messages, and found angels set as guards shooting meteorites at them if they went any way near. Distressed, they realized that it could only be as a result of a major event and searched the globe. A group heard the Prophet (pbuh) and realized that it was the revelation of the Qur’an and went back to their community to report their ndings and complain about how they were deceived by their ‘teacher’ Iblees (Shaytan)
2. RESPONSE FROM DIVINITY 20-28
Allah responds by asking the Prophet (pbuh) to declare to them that he the Prophet :i) Calls only upon Allahii) Doesn’t control any good or eviliii) Seeks refuge only from Allahiv) Only delivers the message as orderedv) And that it is only Allah who is the Knower of the Unseen
The Jinn are a creation who like human beings have free will to choose between being thankful or ungrateful. Iblees (Shaytan) is one of the Jinn. The sura was revealed when the Prophet (pbuh) in 619CE was returning from Taaif where he was rejected and chased away. Sitting under a tree, he sought solace by reciting the Qur’an when a group of Jinn heard him and were captivated by the words. The sura is comfort for the Prophet (pbuh) from Divinity in that his message continues to spread.

NARRATIVEAL KAFIRUN – THOSE WHO DEFIANTLY COVER UP THE TRUTH
1. ADDRESS TO THE KAAFIRUN * OF MAKKA AYAAT 1-5
The Makkans had made up their minds of non acceptance of the Prophet (pbuh). In this sura the Prophet (pbuh) declares his independence from them identifying himself as a Muslim and them as the KAAFIRUN (those who deantly cover up the truth).
They offered him a compromise:i) Lets agree to worship each others Gods in alternate yearsii) Abandon your religion in exchange for wealth, women and position.
They believed this way they could all live in peace. The sura breaks all ties with them saying:“I do not worship that which you are orientated towards nor is my interaction with Divinity like yours…”It created a unique identity independent of race, colour, country….. based on Deen (that which you have exchanged your life for).
2. NO COMPROMISE AYA 6
LAKUM DIYNAKUM WA LIYA DEENYou will have the consequences of your choice of Deen (life transaction) and I will have mine
The sura is paired with Sura Al Ikhlas (112) and they are known as Mukashkish (that which heals). They form part of the basic tenant of Islam – LAA ILAAHA (No Gods) – Sura Al Karun ILLALLAH (Except the One God) – Sura Al Ikhlaas.

NARRATIVEAL FALAQ – THE DAY BREAK
In Sura Al Falaq we are seeking refuge with The One Who brings light after darkness from:
1. MAA KHALAQ – The potential of harm from creation not only because of an evil intention but also from their nature eg. A bee stings not because it is evil but it is in its nature…2. GHAASIQIN IZHAA WAQAB – Darkness where there is no visibility. May also allude to ignorance, obstructions ….3. NAFFAATHAATI FIL UQAD – Blowing on knots refers to witchcraft or powers whose function we cannot comprehend. It may also refer to the knots of relationships.4. HAASIDIN IZHAA HASAD – The root case of most evils – Jealousy. Here we seek refuge from the jealous one when he is jealous.
The sura is paired with Sura Al Naas (114) and they are known as Maudhatayn (the two suras of seeking refuge). They were revealed simultaneously. One seeks refuge from:a) The one who can listenb) He who is more powerful than what one is seeking refuge fromc) He must be on your side
The two suras order human beings to seek refuge from 5 sharrs (that which causes harm). 4 in Sura AL Falaq and 1 in Sura Al Naas1. Potential evil of all creation2. Darkness (ignorance…)3. Blowing on knots (Black magic, relationships)4. Jealousy5. Whispering of Shaitan (the greatest Haasid – jealous one)
