The Zimmermann Telegram

• Arthur Zimmermann (German Sec. of State) sent a telegram to Mexico asking for support.– They wanted Mexico to attack

the US if they attacked Germany.– US found out about this and

pushed them closer to war

Russian Revolution

• In March of 1917 the Russian rebellion overthrew Czar Nicholas from power

• The US was more likely to support the Allies now– Wilson did not believe in

czarist rule of Russia
