What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Historically speaking, musical charts have been the on the forefront of the popularity of an artist and so it is necessary that you satisfy the audience’s need. They are the consumer and there must be an interaction between the producers and the audience. According to a media marketing agency, ‘understanding the audience demographic of a media outlet when wanting to utilize it to get exposure for your content or when wanting to advertise a product or service through it, is extremely important.’ And so, it is evident that the audience demographics are not only taken into account, but, it is also wise to represent them in your production. The target audience is vital and undoubtedly the strand of society by which you want to please.

Analysing Feedback

After analysing my audience feedback, the overall opinion is that our production attracts 17-20 year olds, which is what we intended as the artist we used was in the specific age bracket. This is demonstrated through costume, make-up and persona. The audience tended to find her friendliness, smile, acting; attractiveness and personality are appealing to the viewer. These are the prominent attributes that enhance the success and focus of the artist; this indeed provides a star persona of the artist to ensure maximum success in terms of the image that is eagerly desired. With these characteristics in mind, it emerges into the genre of Indie. In reference to Tim Wall’s ‘Studying popular music culture’,’ we feel we know stars as individuals, but our experience of them id often mediated through the interviews, records, photographs and video appearances we consume.’ Therefore, we can conclude the attributes of which the audience we pleased with were attributes which audiences often consume to delve into the desire of the celebrity culture. Furthermore, improvements could have been made, specifically, in terms of using more naturalistic setting as this scene proved to be successful and effective, additionally the use of the sun was a shot which the audience were intrigued by, a viewer stated, ‘it showed individuality and the bright light was effective’.

This particular show enhances the naturalistic setting and was hugely popular with the audience. This is perhaps due to the blinding light which alters their appearance and is also a low angle, as we get an image of life above the ground, with emphasis on the trees and the sky.

The audience feedback was particularly encouraging, with constructive criticism and positive feedback. An example of this was a member of the audience noticed the darkness of some of the indoor scenes, therefore from this we were able to see the flaws in our work and if we had another opportunity, I feel as though this would be criteria by which we could work on. It was perceived that the attire used was ‘suggestive of the genre which leads us to a star image.’ Additionally, the audience noticed the variety of costume changes which provides for us (Afet and I) recognition of the wardrobe we developed and the amount of input we put into it. It was evident from our audience feedback that women noted the idea of costume change than men, the males noted more on the lighting and camera angles. And so, we can conclude different genders perceive effective aspects of our production differently. In terms of setting the location on the music strand, our media product would probably be aired on music channels such as NME, Q and MTV as MTV broadcasts all types of music genres, these particular music channels show similar videos to our music video, especially NME as they tend to broadcast independent groups and original and alternative music such as alternative and folk, the genres by which our music video is placed within. In terms of an MTV appeal, one member of the audience commented on the panning shot of the artist from the legs to the face, and so this particular scene represents her sexuality and sex appeal, this is the particular representation of women MTV is known to broadcast, with frequent appearances of Lady Gaga and Beyonce.

Moreover, this scene illuminates illusions of feminity with the close-up of the jewellery, the nail polish and lastly the red dress which is a wardrobe essential for many women who empower their gender, sexuality and the genre of their music. In addition, this scene is a representation of the moving attitudes of society as when music videos emerged onto the television you would not see women in this sort of manner, especially showing legs; it is a change in views and liberation of the female.

In conclusion it is evident that audiences are key to musical success, you have to meet with the demands of the consumer as this is who you essentially are trying to please. This is evident through the marketing and advertising of certain artists, Mumford & Son’s for example are a clear example of this. They have a niche target audience who would normally buy NME; this is the strand of society they are geared towards. They music relates to alternative music fans than pop music fans for instance. Mumford & Sons being on the front cover epitomise their musical genre and their appeal, and so this is the same way
