CONTEXT

QUEEN STREET MALL - MYER CENTRE

The site was chosen because of the ACCESSIBILITY. Most people in Brisbane know QUEEN STREET MALL and therefore the branding for the design will take the original name and incorporate that into PUBLIC CENTER. QUEEN STREET MALL also known as Transit Oriented Development and therefore the existing function will be easier to be transformed to PUBLIC CENTER.

The PUBLIC USAGE of QUEEN STREET MALL is clearly exceptional and the existing space is supporting the SOCIALIZING 101 PROGRAMME. Therefore it needs certain alteration and refinement as part of the new design proposal.

OPPORTUNITIES2015 - 2020: SPACE REDUCTION 2020 - 2030: ROAD TRANSFORMATION

Due to the replacement of working technology with autonomous and cloud computing, working entirely from home is now possible. In Brisbane CBD, the office spaces which mostly dominating the CBD will be decreased. Same applied with retails shops, due to the replacement by online shopping, most retail shops will be closed. Therefore, most of the building stories are around 5 - 10 max.

OPPORTUNITIESThe lower level of future building gives adjacency to the QUEEN STREET site in which only have 10 stories high maximum. Also, the transformation of CBD to other function should be considered.

Road only used for delivery and few public transports The autonomous car GPS system have created a smart way of driving so it is possible to have fewer roads than today. Also, people only go out on weekend (and only some of them) so the pedestrian walks are barely used. CBD area only have 2 main roads to accommodate transport activities to important places.

OPPORTUNITIESThe unused roads can be converted to public green walkway and connect it into QUEEN STREET PUBLIC CENTER and act as the expansion of the design.

OPPORTUNITIES2030 - FURTHER FUTURE: THE NEW SOCIAL CITY

The further future scenario contains the space transformation from concrete jungle into actual jungle. Most of the buildings will be demolished and converted into public space. The public spaces can be integrated to the green public walkway as the expansion of QUEEN STREET PUBLIC CENTER. The design will be the main vocal interest of the CBD.

OPPORTUNITIESThe transformation of the CBD creates a sustainable and less pollution environment. Also, QUEEN STREET PUBLIC CENTER can expands into the public spaces and pedestrian walks and form the new perception of the city, as THE NEW SOCIAL CITY, the city which encouraging the people to socialize.

ARCHITECTURAL PROTOTYPE“DID YOU KNOW THAT WHEN YOU LIVE IN THE MODERN CITIES, YOU WILL SLOWLY BECOME AN INDIVIDUALISTIC PERSON”The relationship between MODERN CITIES and INDIVIDUALISTIC BEHAVIOUR is that MODERN (or BIG) CITIES - we can refer to the capitals of the emerged countries such as London, Rome, New York, Hong Kong, Jakarta etc - tends to expose to the advanced technology easily. Furthermore, the technologies have caused a NEW FORM OF CROWDS (Powers 123) as the representation of the new social interaction revolution.

However, sometime we FORGET on how we should interact with the basic simple manner, which is TALKING FACE TO FACE. Now, we are trying to reach someone out there within thousand miles but eventually we forget to talk with our friends next door. Technology, especially regarding informations, have relocated people into virtual world all at once, and leave the real world empty.

Therefore, the proposal of QUEEN STREET PUBLIC SPACE with the association with THE SOCIALIZING 101 PROGRAMME, can be considered as an ARCHITECTURAL PROTOTYPE to tackle the social issues emerging around us. We believe, by implementing the design in each of the big cities around the world, the social issues can be neutralized and reverted to what it should be. Started in Brisbane, Australia.

PRECEDENTS1. KIRUNA CITY HALL / HANNING LARSEN ARCHITECTS - KIRUNA, SWEDEN

“THE CITY’S NATURAL GATHERING POINT” concept is interesting in the way of the simplistic ideas and purpose of this precedent. Somehow, it is quite similar with the intention of the QUEEN STREET PUBLIC CENTER as a container for social activities. As a gathering point, the social interaction will be easier to control as people already know that the purpose of the design, which is to be a gathering point for everybody.

Apart from concept, the form of the building is directly influenced by the climatic condition of the site, in which bringing the sunlight inside the space. The climatic influence have given the building such an interesting configuration of space and open view from and to the ceiling height.

The interesting part of this precedent is the traditional activities of Bergen people, which is selling fish but enclosed in an modern yet contemporary way of Architectural Facade. The building is also trying to preserve and tell the stories through the activities.
