PASTOR’S COLUMN Blessed Among Us…. Venerable Maria Kaupas Founder, Sisters of St. Casimir (1880-1940) Casimira Kaupas was born in Lithuania, then part of the Russian Empire. When she was seventeen she traveled to Scranton, Pennsylvania, to serve as a housekeeper to her brother, a priest. She was struck by the hardship of the Lithuanian Immigrants, most of them employed in the mines. But it was also there that she encountered her first religious Sisters. “Who are those women?” she asked her brother. “They live for God alone,” was his answer. Her heart was immediately won. Though she returned to Lithuania to care for her widowed mother, she continued to dream of pursuing religious life in the United States. An opening came when her brother wrote to say that his fellow priests in Pennsylvania hoped for a congregation that would serve the Lithuanian immigrant community. Eventually she received a formal invitation from Bishop John Shanahan of Harrisburg. She returned and underwent religious formation in Scranton with the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary at Marywood. Her own congregation, the Sisters of St. Casimir, was founded in 1907 when she made her religious vows and took the name Maria. The order quickly grew, establishing schools and eventually hospitals. In 1920, she received an invitation from the bishop of Kaunas to return to Lithuania and establish her congregation there. That accomplished, she returned to the order’s motherhouse in Chicago. There, after suffering through a long ordeal with cancer, she died on April 17, 1940. Her cause for canonization is in process. “Always more, always better, always with love.” -Venerable Maria Kaupas
