for regular –AR, -ER and –IR verbs As you proceed, think about why it is

important to be able to use the past tense

*Vosotros is only used in Spain. We will not be using vosotros in this course. Always use Uds.

Every verb has two parts

Just like the familiar present tense in Spanish, all verbs will be broken down into two parts before conjugating. Remember, we do this in

English as well: “He walks”

To form the preterite tense…

Here are the regular –AR preterite verb endings:

Tú = aste

Él Ella = óUd.

*Notice that the nosotros ending in preterite tense is the same as present tense. Context will help you understand which tense is being used.

This is not dissimilar from English. Think about it! I talked

“-ed” is the ending that we often add to signal past tense in English.

Unit project Create a short story about a recent shopping trip

that you took with someone (perhaps a friend or family member).  Use the Zooburst website to create the story and e-mail me your story when it is completed. Each subject (yo,tú, él, etc.) must be used at least once in your story.  You should have a minimum of five sentences.  Do not use a free translator. Use the vocabulary from this chapter to help you.
