• Training and development should be required of all advisors. The training should be comprehensive and carefully connected to the mission of the college, program of study, and the students’ needs. A successful training/development program must address the following three elements:– Conceptual elements-these elements include the
definition and mission of academic advising and its goals, as well as connecting advising to retention and persistence
– Informational elements-include institutional policies and procedures, programs of study, curriculum requirements, and campus resources
– Relational elements-relationship building, communication skills, questioning skills, and mentoring skills are all a part of relational elements

• Avoid limiting advisor training to the informational elements. It is critical that advisors develop an appreciation of the meaning and value of advising as well as the relational skills that enable them to interact effectively with their students.
• Another important factor in advisor development is providing the appropriate that advisors can refer to on an ongoing basis. Handbooks should include:– the mission and goals of academic advising;– the roles and responsibilities of advisors and advisees– frequently asked questions concerning advising (FAQs)– campus resources for proper referrals of students– a list of important contacts, dates, and other pertinent
information that advisors could be expected to need.

• Technology—Appropriate use of technology can be a major assistance in advising. Indeed the wise use of technology can free up the advisors’ valuable time to spend with individual students’ needs as opposed to the more clerical aspects of advising.
• Strategies for dealing with large numbers of students at peak times-There are a number of ways that colleges can deal with the issue of student volume coupled with limited advisor availability. Certainly technology can assist, but there are other “low tech” ways to deal with this problem such as:
– Both peer advising and group advising, for example, can work extremely well provided there is careful selection, training and evaluation of the peers. Group advising is especially helpful, particularly if the groups are made up of students with similar needs.
– I would recommend Dr. Nancy King’s chapter on group advising in The Jossey-Bass Handbook on Academic Advising, 2nd edition for specific information about the structure, purpose, and advantages of group advising.

• Reward and Recognition for Advisors-Extrinsic– A reduction in non-instructional load (i.e., committee work)– An occasional course release in exchange for an
exceptionally heavy advising load– The inclusion of advising in promotion or merit increase
decisions.
– All of these suggestions I am aware depend upon the
availability of resources.• Reward and Recognition for Advisors-Intrinsic
– Advisor awards both locally and nationally• Establishing an “Advisor of the Year” award on the campuses would be a
good starting point. Nominating advisors for the National Academic Advising Association’s international awards program is an excellent way of bringing visibility to the campuses as well as offering outstanding recognition to the advisors.
