ForageMax®Quality Grass Mix tures
It is recognised globally that few countries enjoy the advantages Ireland has when it comes to production from forage. Our ability to produce home grown forages is second to none and will continue to drive efficiencies on farm. As the global leader in grass and clover breeding, DLF is founded on the principle of continuous innovation and we recognise the importance of high performance forage varieties to Irish farmers.
Through this principle, we are committed to supporting the industry with the latest research and development in grass and forage breeding. A key indicator of our dedication to bringing advancements to the Irish Forage sector is realised through our extensive trial site in Waterford. This site doubled in size to over 2,000 plots, which will be harvested and tested in 2017. Within ForageMax® we have not only designed mixtures based on some of the best varieties available today, but we also validate this with Irish trial plots and on farm trials.
Our ethos of bringing the best varieties from the DLF global portfolio and breeding them in Ireland, is testament to our commitment to enable Irish farmers maximise their farm efficiencies.
Who Are DLF?

PAUL FLANAGAN GENERAL MANAGER
DLF Grass Partners
We are in our second full year of harvesting at the DLF grass and forage trial site. In 2017 we will harvest and analyse more than 2,000 plots of grass and forage. We are churning out the results that will feed into Irish recommended lists and identify exceptional varieties from the vast portfolio of genetics being tested. DM yield, forage quality and disease resistance are some of the key trials we are selecting for.
Despite common opinion that Ireland does not suffer from grass diseases; rust, mildew and drechslera can be commonly found in swards. There are vast differences between varieties resistance to these diseases and most countries will publish this data on recommended lists. Ireland currently does not publish this data however we are generating this database at our trial site in Waterford and already see a broad spectrum of resistance across varieties.
Forage quality will become more important going forward as we seek to learn how much energy/ha we can grow and what proportion of our DM yield is digestable and usable by the rumen. Digestibility of the cell wall (DNDF) is the single most important quality parameter in grasses. High DNDF results in higher animal intake of forage and consequently higher output as milk or live weight grain. With high DNDF varieties you get higher production, as these varieties deliver the best possible combination of yield and quality, when harvested at the optimal time. For Perennial ryegrass, differences of up to 10% of units in DNDF are reported in literature. This gives the grass breeder something to work with and at DLF we have for some time been looking for variation in DNDF, in order to select the best varieties for our portfolio.
In 2016 we hosted merchants, farmers and discussion groups at the site to offer a feeling for the scale of our trials and understanding of the selection process. It is important for us also to hear feedback from farmers, which will help challange the direction of our program in future years. We are always open for visits and trial site tours.

5 DLF Forage Quality
Digestible Forage = Healthy stock = More Milk & better LWGHaving spent many years improving yield and disease resistance, the main goal now is to improve feed value and digestibility of the fibre components. Developing even higher yielding varieties may be counter-productive – especially in countries with strict limits on nitrogen use. The breeders at DLF are now focused on producing varieties of grass with improved forage quality, in particular those with high cell wall digestibility (DNDF).
Fibre is one of the main reasons for feeding grass to ruminants, but it can be indigestible and consequently locks up valuable nutrients. Research has shown that a 10% improvement in fibre digestibility can raise milk production by 6.4% and at the same time reduce nitrogen released into the environment by 4.9%; therefore this is what we are aiming to achieve in the future.

Advanced™ Grasses are created by crossing fescues with ryegrasses. The objective of this Advanced™ hybrid breeding is to create grass varieties with high forage quality combined with good persistence, stress tolerance and disease resistance.Yield increases of between 10% and 50% are common when DLF varieties of Advanced™ Grasses are tested in trials.
Perseus and Perun have all the attributes of an Italian ryegrass with additional yield. They also demonstrate improved persistence and stress tolerance. Perseus and Perun are ideal for short term mixtures which last up to 3 years where they can replace Italian and hybrid ryegrass in a silage and aftermath grazing mixture. They also are quick to recover after drought / wet conditions.
The variety LOFA has the broadest appeal of all Advanced™ Grasses. It has all the attributes of a hybrid ryegrass but exhibits improved persistence and stress tolerance over standard hybrid ryegrass varieties. These characteristics make Lofa an ideal component in medium term mixtures as its persistence, being similar to standard hybrid ryegrass, matches the expected duration of the vast majority of medium term mixtures currently used in the UK. This means extra yield and quality in your ley.
Fojtan & Mahulena are suitable to go into all types of mixtures. They complement perennial and hybrid ryegrasses along with Lucerne or red clover. The Advanced Tall Fescue increases the persistency of a mixture because they are able to tolerate challenging and stressful conditions. This is because they have a deeper rooting system which means a greater tolerance to dry conditions.

Late Heading GrazerA specialist grazing mixture with the latest genetics from DLF with superior spring, summer and autumn growth over other leading brands. For maximum benefit a grazing height of 8cm should be maintained. If growth outstrips demand surplus grass should be ensiled. Both Solas and Aspect are performing well on Teagasc on farm grazing trials.
High Clover Grazer Recent research by Teagasc’s Clonakilty Agricultural College, showed that incorporating white clover into ryegrass pastures has the potential to reduce costs, increase animal performance and improve environmental sustainability on Irish dairy farms. Cows grazing the swards with clover incorporated in Clonakilty, yielded an extra 55 kg/ha of milk solids. Our High Clover Grazer mix has the latest varieties available to the Irish market in Coolfin and Buddy.

Offers vitamin and mineral intakes usually absent from grass alone
Trials show higher live weight gains and significant reduction in the number of doses required per lamb
Increased production in drought periods due to deep rooting nature
Inclusion of red and white clover increases palatability and reduces N requirement
Good spring growth
Inclusion of Timothy for early spring growth and more palatable hay and silage
Suitable for silage and hay as well as grazing
High diploid content for dense sward and persistence
Flock 6 SpeciesAs the name suggests this mixture contains six species. Ryegrass species provide the yield and quality to the sward while Chicory and Plantain add vitamins and minerals which are sometimes devoid in grass. Clover is also included at a high rate to ensure more palatable grazing and boost weight gain.
Six species mixtures are currently being trialled by UCD with very positive preliminary results in terms of weight gain and reduction in worm count.
Flock Dual PurposeA blend of intermediates and lates with the inclusion of Timothy. This mixture has a high diploid content for high ground cover, it will produce good spring yields for early turnout.

19 Overseeding Overseeding Mix tures
Take the risk out of overseeding and use ProNitro® treated seedOverseeding into existing grassland is an economical way to maintain a high percentage of perennial ryegrass, repair poached ground and ultimately keep fields producing high DM yields. As with any seeding operation the key to success is getting good seed to soil contact. Ideally whatever method is used a light tilth should be created for the new seed. Most of the modern machinery used by contractors either use a combination of tines and discs to create a tilth for the seed or use discs to cut a slot for the seed to sit in and close again. More traditional methods such as using a chain harrow, spreading the seed and rolling are also very effective.
What we traditionally have control over is creating that seed bed and ensuring good contact for maximum germination, however now we can influence how the seedlings perform against the old sward coming back with ProNitro®. With ProNitro® we are using targeted N to promote the new seedling and not the surrounding plants. There is enough N on the seed to drive growth for the first 3 – 4 weeks after germination ensuring better establishment and more live plants per m² than untreated seed.
Today typical reseeding costs are in the region of €300/acre although this can vary depending on the method used. Overseeding with ProNitro® can be done for as little as €100 per/acre. Assuming a ley is reseeded in year one, regular overseeding repairs damage between reseeds and keeps swards productive. Also by keeping fields topped up with new grass this prevents the ley from dropping yields as tends to happen at the tail end of a reseed program.

20Overseeding Mix tures
OverseedingOur ProNitro® Overseeding mix as the name suggests is specifically designed for overseeding. This is a cost effective way of establishing new grass seeds in an existing sward and a great way to economically boost a field’s production. All varieties are selected based on DM seasonal yields and high quality DMD%. Our unique ProNitro® coating offers more live plants and faster establishment compared to untreated seeds.
Overseeding - DLF Top Tips Assess the field for weeds and grass species content Timing is essential. After the last cut or hard grazing in the late summer or autumn is best Use ProNitro® treated seed as an option Use the correct drilling method. For younger open swards a scarifying rake, for denser swards a disc drill Cross drilling can improve ground cover Roll after drilling for good seed to soil contact. Use a Cambridge roll if possible Be aware of Fritfly and Leather Jacket attack (consult your agronomist) Stock can continue to graze up to seedling emergence. Then allow establishment
Result – more yield, better quality, healthier stock
DLF trials show ProNitro® coated seed produces 200% more fresh weight in first 21 days
DLF trials show ProNitro®seed delivers 30% more live seedlings than untreated seed
ProNitro® feeds the seed not the weed
DLF trials show ProNitro® enhances root growth – 30% longer with ProNitro®

HorseMax PaddockLong term horse grazing with an option to produce a quality hay crop. HorseMax Paddock is designed using diploid Perennial Ryegrasses, Timothy and Creeping Red Fescue. Sward density is a key consideration as both grazing and winter feed are often produced from the same area. Timothy is much favoured by horses and in particular gives hay a sweet smell and is very palatable. Creeping Red Fescue is key to keeping the sward together and because of its growth habit quickly repairs the turf when damaged by hooves.
Very good sward density
Suitable for a hay crop if desired

24GLAS
The scheme now has its third tranche of GLAS participants on board and there are nearly 50,000 partaking. GLAS offers a maximum payment of €5,000 per year to participants who commit to carrying out a five-year plan of actions. There are essentially three tiers to GLAS; Tier 1 targets vulnerable landscapes (including Natura and commonages), important bird- species and protection of high-status watercourses; Tier 2 focuses on water-quality, through protection of predetermined vulnerable water-courses, while also accepting proposals from other farmers who are prepared to take on actions against targeting climate change mitigation and supporting farmland birds; Tier 3 consists of actions such as the protection of traditional hay meadows, low input permanent pastures, important landscape features like archaeological monuments, hedgerows and stone-walls, as well as provision of bird, bat and bee nesting facilities and the planting of small groves of native trees.

More Milk With DLF is the concept whereby DLF focuses on the feeding value of grass. The development of the ForageMax® brand is aimed at launching new varieties and mixtures for livestock farmers. ForageMax® has become the most widespread forage grass brand in Europe and is being used in more than 25 countries.
To showcase this in the Irish market we’re partnering with three dairy farmers to provide top class varieties and products, along with sharing advice, expertise and knowledge. Ultimately, we will turn our products into profit for our partner farmers, through an increased output of milk.
