Biostimulants assist the seedling’s ability to take advantage of the soil’s own inherent reserves of nutrient by stimulating the soil’s microflora, resulting in improved root growth and establishment.

GroMax is a dry formulation of natural humates and humic acids, seaweed extract, a proprietary blend of natural sugars (sucrose), vitamins (B complex & K) soluble potash and buffering agents. The product is compatible with most micronutrients, fertilisers and pesticides.

Humic Acids Rich in auxin type substances which enhance

antioxidant synthesis – important in increasing plant metabolism under stress conditions

Serve as an important high carbon food source for soil micro-organisms

Improve the permeability of cell-wall membranes in roots, allowing more rapid absorption of essential nutrients

Seaweed Extract Contains high levels of cytokinins which

promote cell division and lateral root growth and delay the ageing process of plant tissue

Stimulates root growth after damage by disease or root feeding insects, or under conditions of temperature, water or salt stress

Sucrose Serves as a high energy food source for plant

and soil micro-organisms

B Complex & K Vitamins Act as important catalysts to enhance and

drive plant metabolism. Vitamin B1 is widely used as a rooting aid

Amino acids Form the building blocks of proteins -

essential for plant growth and metabolism

Potassium Plays a vital role in disease resistance and

overall hardiness of grass plants

INGREDIENT SUMMARY

Following extensive research DLF Seeds Ltd. is delighted to continue to offer the benefits of GroMax on TechniTurf mixtures.

ClearSky™ - Grass Technology & Habitat Management02

SUSTAINABLE VEGETATION PROVIDING A SECURE HABITAT FOR AIRPORTS Wildlife is a major risk in aviation. Occurring primarily at take off and landing, a collision between bird and airplane, or the suction of waste clippings into an engine, can have serious consequences. The size and diversity of grass areas of an airport make it very attractive to many bird species providing shelter, a source of food and limited human activity. Bird strike is a long standing problem. Old and out dated grass mixtures contain large amounts of agricultural grasses resulting in high green matter yield, dense vegetation offering shelter for small animals, and thick layers of decaying matter encouraging moss and lichen. The decaying matter also reduces the effectiveness of insecticides, insects being a major bird attractant.

The solutionThe selection and introduction of species with erect, upright growth habit thus reducing

shelter and protection. The use of non agricultural species results in less leaf vegetation meaning fewer clippings and arisings along with less decaying matter.

A composition that provides rapid establishment of vegetation providing ground cover whilst the slow growing species establish. Depending on conditions and solutions chosen, grasses with a high natural percentage of Endophytes can also be incorporated. The choice of composition allows ease of achieving the ‘Long Grass Policy’ adopted at many airports worldwide. DLF and the ClearSky programme select and produce seeds, through research and development, and have developed compositions adapted to specific areas of airfields.

03

ClearSky benefits from the biggest R&Dprogramme specific for grasses by DLF to assure the solution for today and the future. The ClearSky aim is to provide innovative solutions to problem areas to reduce bird andwildlife activity whilst improving the grasslandhabitat and maintenance operations.ClearSky offer programs of renovation withspecific compositions to solve individualproblems and tailored to meet individualrequirements. The ClearSky solution includes a fullhabitat survey to establish individual siterequirements, problems and micro climaticconditions. A maintenance programme can then be devised with recommendations for long termsolutions such as site renovation.

MORE EFFECTIVE OVERSEEDING OF GREENSGreenkeepers are under pressure from all sides: players who want to play all year round on fast greens and perfect tees; unpredictable and at times extreme climate; not forgetting the restricted use of water and chemicals as sustainable, ecological considerations become more relevant. Therefore, practical management systems like overseeding, where new grass is introduced into the sward will be a long term investment for any golf course.

Overseeding not only replaces grasses which are not renewed by natural regeneration, but offer the opportunity to introduce higher performance varieties into the sward. The latest genetic improvements can be included which take advantage of our substantial investment in research and development. Overseeding helps to maintain a diverse and balanced sward, reducing the invasion of unwanted grasses and weeds.

HOW TO OVERSEEDAs part of the preparation for overseeding it is necessary to create gaps in the existing sward to give seedlings a chance to compete and ensure the seed is in contact with the rootzone. This can be achieved through verticutting, scarifying or aeration, or may form part of the role of the equipment chosen for the actual task of introducing the seed.

Seed can be applied to the greens during regular work as long as the seed is brushed into the cores in the final dressing. This has the added benefit of providing a good depth of root zone below the seed. Surface scarification and top dressing can be utilised applying the seed within the top dressing

For best results, overseed in good growing weather. Relax operations which are likely to cause stress to emerging seedlings. Overseeding to improve turf quality may well require the implementation of a programme of treatments.

Whatever choice is made it is very important to recognise the maintenance requirements of these grasses and choose highly rated seed varieties if overseeding is to be successful.

16Wild Flower Seeding & Maintenance

GROUND PREPARATION Sowing is best carried out on less fertile

soils, even sub soils

A well drained, low fertile, weed free site is preferred

Perennial weeds should be eradicated by cultivation or spraying

Dig, rotavate, plough or harrow, as you would for a grass-seeded area, to level the surface

Do not apply manure or fertiliser or import topsoil, as this will stimulate annual weeds and the accompanying grasses at the expense of the more desirable slower establishing and less aggressive species

SEED SOWING Whilst good results can be obtained in poor

conditions, sowing under warm and moist conditions into a firm, good tilth, produces more reliable results

February – May and August – September are the optimum months for sowing

Sowing from October to January can be successful but poor weather conditions during this period may delay germination until the spring

Sowings on steep slopes or banks should be avoided as displacement of seed or seedlings could occur during periods of heavy rainfall

Remix the seed prior to sowing, as seeds of varying shapes, sizes and textures are likely to have separated during transit

Divide the seed into two equal parts and sow in two passes at 45º. A carrier such as damp sand may be used

Seed should be broadcast by hand or applied with a fertilizer spreader or similar device

Sow at 5g per metre² for grass and flora blends or 1g for pure flora stands

Lightly rake after seeding and roll using a Cambridge roller

INITIAL MAINTENANCETo control weed and minimise competition from grasses cut the sward to 5cm every 8 weeks during the first year. If possible remove all cuttings.

First cut should take place March / April following an autumn sowing or May following a spring sowing.

Last cut should be September / October.

LATER MAINTENANCEAfter the first year the sward should be established and the future maintenance can vary according to size, location, soil type and wildlife needs. Some larger sites can offer grazing or hay options but this should not take place during the flowering and seeding months of May to August. Each year cut during March / April and then after the flowering period in September / October. If possible remove all cuttings. Weeds should be less of a problem but should they continue then spot treat with a suitable herbicide.

CORNFIELD ANNUALSCut once early March and then again after flowering in September / October.

17

Our new improved and extended range of Wild Flower seeds offer mixtures for a wide range of soil types and situations. All blends, with the exception of Heritage, contain only native British seed stocks and provide the Landscaper or Architect with a readily available supply of cost effective mixtures.
