ACCENT SACD 25315 Label Code 196 Price Code V JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH; CANTATAS Falsche Welt, dir trau ich nicht: BWV 52 O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort: BWV 60 Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ: BWV 116 Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme: BWV 140 ARTISTS: La Petite Bande; Kuijken In the beginning there was great scepticism towards the thesis that Bach’s sacred vocal works were originally written for solo voices. Now this interpretation is establishing itself more and more. With this edition of one cantata for each Sunday and the great feasts of the ecclesiastical year Sigiswald Kuijken and La Petite Bande want to strengthen this new approach and prove it right by their excellent performances. This Vol. 15 of the edition contains cantatas which Johann Sebastian Bach wrote for the last four Sundays before Advent: BWV 52 „ False world, I trust thee not!“, BWV 60 „O Eternity, thou thunderous word“, BWV 116 „Thou Prince of Peace, Lord Jesus Christ“, BWV 140 „Awaken ye, the watchman calls us“. “Among current cantata series Sigiswald Kuijken‘s has a distinctive place, his one-to-a-part voices and few instruments achieving striking delicacy. His vocal soloists sing with disarming simplicity and ease in arias, and blend superbly in ensemble. A rare treat, Kuijken – and Bach – at their very best.” (BBC Music Magazine, March 2010, review vol. 9)

Scarcely anybody of his now much more famous contemporaries has managed to combine Beethoven‘s achievements with the new tendencies of Romanticism as convincing as Louis Spohr. ARS PRODUKTION starts with a small series of songs and duets for voice(s) and piano. It is an emphatic pleading to get to know the neglected song composer Spohr.

BIS - SACD 1947 Label Code 419 Price Code P ANTONÍN DVORAK ; SILENT WOODS Original works and transcriptions for cello and piano Sonatina in G major, Op.100; Rondo in G minor, Op.94; Silent Woods, Op.68 No.5; Songs My Mother Taught Me, Op.55 No.4; Good Night, Op.73 No.1; Polonaise in A major, Op.posth.; Larghetto in G minor, Op.75a No.4; Song to the Moon from Rusalka, Op.114; Lasst mich allein, Op.82 No.1 ARTISTS: cello: Christian Poltera; piano Kathryn Stott Antonín Dvo!ák’s path to his famous cello concerto was long and far from direct. Certainly he had used the instrument to great effect in his orchestral music, but for a long time he doubted its suitability as a solo instrument. To some extent, this disc charts the process of the composer towards the recognition of the full capabilities of the cello, as it includes chamber works that Dvo!ák composed directly for cello and piano, or arranged for the combination. The earliest of these, although not published until long after the composer’s death, was the Polonaise in A major, a piece lyrical and virtuosic in turns. Some thirteen years later, in 1892, Dvo!ák composed the Rondo in G minor and arranged Silent Woods, originally a piano duet. Shortly after he also made versions for cello and orchestra of both pieces, almost as if preparing himself for the concerto, which he began writing in 1894. Dvo!ák’s own practice of arranging existing works has encouraged Christian Poltéra to select a number of the composer’s violin pieces and songs, performing them here in his own transcriptions. These include the Violin Sonatina, from the same time as the Rondo and Silent Woods and originally intended for Dvo!ák’s own children. Among the songs are Lasst mich allein, which Dvo!ák quotes it in the slow movement of the cello concerto, and the ever-popular Songs My Mother Taught Me, as well as Rusalka’s Song to the Moon, as eloquent a declaration of love as can be, even when performed without words. Christian Poltéra and Kathryn Stott are regular partners in chamber music, and have previously recorded music by Honegger and Frank Martin together, on discs that have received distinction BIS - SACD 1950 Label Code 419 Price Code P RICHARD STRAUSS Eine Alpensinfonie, Op.64; Symphonische Fantasie aus ‘Die Frau ohne Schatten’ (1947) ARTISTS: São Paulo Symphony Orchestra; Frank Shipway Called a ‘symphony’ by its composer, Richard Strauss’ Alpine Symphony is nevertheless a symphonic poem, and as such it is the last in a series of works that includes such masterpieces as Don Juan, Also sprach Zarathustra and Ein Heldenleben. In 1900, when Strauss first mentioned any plans for the work, he spoke of a symphonic poem in two parts that would begin with a sunrise in Switzerland. When he returned to the idea some ten years later, the work soon grew so vast that he decided to be content with one single movement, depicting the ‘worship of eternal glorious nature’. To regard the Alpensinfonie simply as an impression of landscape would be a mistake, however. It does make use of Strauss’ entire repertoire of orchestral pictorialism, but behind it are ideas much less simple: nature is being worshipped in the intoxicated spirit of Nietzsche’s superman, the liberation of the soul is achieved through hard work – the climber’s struggle to gain the mountaintOp.The work is divided into 22 sections that flow in an unbroken sequence, marking the ascent and descent of the mountain, from before sunrise to after sunset. It was scored for the largest orchestra ever used by Strauss for a purely orchestral piece, and he later said that it was in the Alpine Symphony that he had ‘finally learned how to orchestrate’. The experience must in any case have been useful when he composed his next work, the opera Die Frau ohne Schatten, with an even more opulent orchestration. The opera was premièred in 1919, but it wasn’t until 1946 that Strauss, in his 82nd year, returned to the score in order to make his Symphonic Fantasy, based on high points from the opera. These huge, and enormously colourful works are performed here by the eminent São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, whose highly praised recordings of the Choros by Villa- Lobos have been described as ‘an orgy of colours and rhythms’ (Diapason) and ‘an assured blend of lush colours, pulsating rhythms and supple phrasing’ (International Record Review). The orchestra is conducted by Frank Shipway, with fine credentials in late-Romantic Austro-German repertoire.

BIS - SACD 1962 Label Code 419 Price Code P COLORATURA Reinhold Glière: Concerto for coloratura soprano and orchestra, Op.82; Ambroise Thomas: Scène et air d’Ophélie from Hamlet; Léo Delibes: The Bell Song from Lakmé; Alexander Alyabyev: The Nightingale; W. A. Mozart: Der Hölle Rache from Die Zauberflöte; John Zorn: La Machine de l’être; Jean Sibelius: Luonnotar, Op.70 ARTISTS: Anu Komsi, soprano; Lahti Symphony Orchestra; Sakari Oramo Coloratura – the colouring of a note, a phrase, an entire aria with trills, ornaments, death-defying leaps and dynamic shadings of infinite variety. For more than two centuries, the art of coloratura was a central aspect of the vocal art, and especially of opera, developed largely by the castrato singers at first, and later by generations of star performers and their vocal coaches. In the mid-nineteenth century this great tradition was all but broken – neither Wagner nor Verdi were prepared to accommodate it in their different brands of music drama, and as both the opera houses and their orchestras grew larger, a different, heavier and more powerful style of singing was favoured. But the fascination and awe inspired by this almost supernatural phenomenon has never died, among audiences, singers or composers. Anu Komsi, Finland’s ‘coloratura assoluta’, here presents a selection almost as wide-ranging as her own vocal technique, with mad scenes and rage arias from 18th- and 19th-century operas, Alyabyev’s ever-soaring Nightingale and the silvery tinkling of Lakmé’s Bell Song. Later examples of the lengths a singer may be expected to go to are Glière’s glittering (and strikingly anachronistic) Concerto for coloratura and orchestra from 1943, and La Machine de l’être by the composer John Zorn (b. 1953). Described by Zorn as a monodrama, this 11 minute-long work in three parts received its scenic première in 2011,by Anu Komsi at the New York City Opera. Throughout the programme, Anu Komsi is supported by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo, and in the closing work all involved find themselves on familiar ground in a thoroughly idiomatic performance of Sibelius’ Luonnotar, with its text from the Finnish national epos Kalevala, and a vocal part which is among the most challenging in the literature.

FARAO SACD 108061 Label Code 128 Price Code E ROBERT SCHUMANN CONCERT PIECE FOR 4 VALVE HORNS RICHARD WAGNER SIEGFRIED-IDYLL RICHARD STRAUSS METAMORPHOSEN ARTISTS: Bayerisches Staatsorchester; Kent Nagano cond.; Solo Horn: Johannes Dengler, Franz Draxinger, Rainer Schmitz, Max Hochwimmer Recorded at Farao Studios, Munich November 2008 A new dawn and history When conducting the Bavarian State Orchestra, a matter which is of key importance to Kent Nagano is the orchestra’s special character, which has evolved from out of its almost 500 years of tradition, it being one of the oldest orchestras world wide. For Nagano, herein lies the analogy which is necessary for his commitment for all that is new in music. The distinguishing feature of this orchestra is its unmistakable warm and dark string sound, having been fostered by the great operas of Mozart and Wagner, and enriched not only through the works of Richard Strauss but actually working with the composer himself. What culminates from out of this, through the tonal contributions of the horns and brass, is a basic tone quality which is wonderfully rounded, never stressing brilliance merely for the sake of brilliance.

GLOSSA SACD 921116 5 CD SET Label Code 159 Price Code V LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN: LIVE FROM ROTTERDAM 2011 THE SYMPHONIES ARTISTS: Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century; Brüggen LIVE It was some years after founding the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century in 1981 that Frans Brüggen first turned his attention to the music of Beethoven’s Nine Symphonies and endeavoured to perceive that special orchestral landscape, in order to transform it into musical sound, with the use of period instruments rediscovering historical tonal colours. Now, his quest undimmed, Brüggen has submerged himself once more into the glories of Beethoven’s orchestral music for a new cycle being issued in a sumptuous new hybrid SACD box set by Glossa. Likewise undimmed is the rapport he shares with his orchestra for one of classical music’s greatest challenges of realizing the intimate and the familiar in these symphonies, a challenge achieved here on record by way of concert performances (Brüggen has long distanced himself from studio recordings). As well as being a witness to Brüggen’s communing with the spirit of Beethoven, this Glossa edition comes with a series of powerful and elegant photographs of conductor and orchestra by Annelies van der Vegt (also one of the orchestra’s first violinists), taken during the tour which led up to the “Beethoven Experience” in the Rotterdam concert hall of de Doelen last year, where the symphonies were recorded.

The collection termed by experts as “Das Partiturbuch Ludwig” was created for the culture-loving Duke August of Brunswick and his wife and was presented to him on the occasion of his 83rd birthday. It is amazing that despite the devastating effects of such a long period of war in Germany, cultural life had never come to a complete standstill, and Jacob Ludwig succeeded in discovering a whole series of musical jewels to add to his collection. The works of Das Partiturbuch Ludwig were arranged according to the number of instruments involved and include sonatas, canzonas, chaconnes and other works influenced by the modern Italian trends of this period. The volume is one of the most valuable sources north of the Alps for works displaying the technical and compositional potential of the violin whose popularity was on the rise at this time. The renowned Baroque violinist Florian Deuter and his ensemble Harmonie Universelle have compiled a selection from the 114 works included in Das Partiturbuch Ludwig which not only demonstrates the incredible variety of music from this source, but also offers listeners a broad palette of different genres and instrumental scoring.

Starting with the Gregorian chant of the Catholic liturgy, especially the socalled "O Antiphons", which were sung to the Magnificat in the last days of Advent, and elaborate Latin motets, it presents the development of Protestant German song as set by Michael Praetorius, Samuel Scheidt and Johann Hermann Schein. Here are to be found old friends, the almost "folk songlike" next to wonderful treasures, which are produced in this form for the first time all presented with the crystal clear and beautiful vocal sound, which one is used to from Stimmwerck.

ARTISTS: Marie Nishiyama; Rafael Bonavita The reign of Elizabeth Tudor (15581603) brought with it a period of splendour for England, within which the lute experienced its moment of glory. In paintings from this time convivial scenes featuring performers of harp and lute are often depicted. Well known melodies of the epoch, as well as harmonic sequences such as Bergamasca, Ruggiero, Callinoe, Conde Claros and various Dumps were used by performers when they gathered to improvise together. Sometimes the music was dedicated to a wellknown personality of the court such as was surely the case with The Queenes good Night, inspiring sweet dreams for Elizabeth. For this recording Marie Nishiyama and Rafael Bonavita have mixed the colours of harp and lute, the characteristics of each instrument to create a dialogue of sound between the two. Rather than following the order of the printed edition, La Venexiana has preferred here to arrange the sequence of pieces into three substantial liturgical settings, each one equipped with its own self-governing character. The first two discs contain one office of Vespers each, taking advantage of the fact that Monteverdi provided double (and sometimes even triple) versions of the Dixit Dominus, Confitebor, Beatus vir, Laudate pueri, Laudate Dominum, Magnificat and Salve Regina. The programme for the third disc has essentially been created around the Messa a 4 and includes other free-standing mass sections. The effect is of constructing a grand missa solemnis that perhaps might have been heard on November 21, 1631 in Saint Mark’s to celebrate the cessation of the plague epidemic in Venice. With a recently-presented Gramophone Award for the ensemble’s indispensable recording of L’Orfeo still fresh in the mind, this disc will undoubtedly bring much delight to lovers of the music of the two Claudios: Monteverdi and Cavina… GLOSSA 921513 Label Code 119 Price Code F ANTONIO VIVALDI: LA SENNA FESTEGGIANTE ARTISTS: La Risonanza; F. Bonizzoni Continuing his captivating survey of the Baroque serenata, Fabio Bonizzoni now focuses on one of the “occasional” works – with music at a magnificently high level throughout – written by Antonio Vivaldi when in Venice: La Senna festeggiante. What animated Vivaldi to compose a work apparently extolling the virtues of the River Seine in Paris? The story goes, as described by Michael Talbot in his exemplary accompanying essay, that the serenata was written in 1726 jointly to honour the French king, Louis XV (on his name day), Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni (then the Protector of the Affairs of France at the Vatican) and the French Ambassador in Venice, the Comte de Gergy; and bringing in the river to heap Baroque praise on the Sun King’s greatgrandson. An unmistakeably Vivaldian score (complete with selfborrowings and “loans” from others), the composer nonetheless makes plentiful musical allusions to his Gallic theme and setting through the music of the three named vocalists – The Golden Age, Virtue and the Seine – and through the instrumental accompaniment, handled deftly and gloriously here by Fabio Bonizzoni and La Risonanza. The singers, Yetzabel Arias Fernández, Martín Oro and Sergio Foresti, capture the spirit of the allegorical and fluvial characters superbly in this new Glossa recording, which was made at the Abbaye de SaintMichel en Thiérache (also the setting for La Risonanza’s earlier recording of Alessandro Scarlatti’s Serenate a Filli).

GLOSSA 921514 2 CD SET Label Code 119 Price Code F GIROLAMO FRESCOBALDI TOCCATAS & PARTITAS ARTISTS: Bonizzoni (harpsichord, organ) For as much as Fabio Bonizzoni is drawn to the splendours of Baroque music for voices and orchestra – as demonstrated through his awardwinning recordings with La Risonanza – his keyboardplaying instincts are constantly urging him to tackle masterpieces of the keyboard repertory. Most recently having applied his musical insight and virtuosity to Bach’s Die Kunst der Fuge, Bonizzoni now pits himself against another, albeit earlier, Baroque master in Girolamo Frescobaldi. Frequentlycited as being as important for keyboard music as Monteverdi was for vocal and dramatic fare, the genius of the Ferraraborn Frescobaldi was amply recognized when working in Rome and Florence – periods when he published (and revised) the two books of toccatas (but including canzonas and partitas or variations sets) recorded by Bonizzoni here. Frescobaldi’s toccatas allow for – and draw from Bonizzoni – great interpretative flexibility, calling for rhythmic freedom, not to say drama and emotion. Indeed, Bonizzoni, clearly mindful of the new demands of the seconda prattica in Frescobaldi’s time, likens the toccatas to being madrigals without words:poetry lies at the heart of his performances. This new recording from Glossa has Fabio Bonizzoni playing on a splendid modern copy of an Italian Baroque harpsichord and on the idiosyncratic organ of the Basilica of Santa Barbara in Mantua. Along the way,Bonizzoni has puzzled out – and describes in the booklet – how best to draw out the sound appropriate for Frescobaldi’s music from this mysterious instrument. Opéras Music by Bodin de Boismortier, Purcell Destouches, Marais, Grétry and Campra V.Mes petits bijoux préférés Music by Bodin de Boismortier, Marais and Destouches ARTISTS: Hervé Niquet 26 years ago, Hervé Niquet recalls having become so incensed with the disparaging remarks directed at French music and the Lamentations of Jean Gilles in particular by a conductor of a choir in which he was then singing that Niquet vowed to set up his own ensemble and record the work – and demonstrate furthermore other beauties of music from his country (and beyond). And so was born Le Concert Spirituel, now celebrating its quarter century, its vocal and instrumental forces throughout that time constantly delighting audiences with its joyous celebration of music from the 17th and 18th centuries (and now with CharlesSimon Catel’s Sémiramis, the dawn of the 19th). To mark the anniversary, Glossa is now issuing an attractively priced doubledisc celebration, with Niquet pulling out the stops from across Le Concert Spirituel’s broad and expansive range (and he started musical life as an organist, after all): Baroque sacred music, MarcAntoine Charpentier assuredly; selections from Le Concert Spirituel’s “reoxygenation”, as he calls it, of the tragédie lyrique (Grétry, Campra, Destouches), but also demonstrations of his own nimblefooted theatrical tendency (Niquet is an avowed fan of the musichall!) in Handel, Purcell and Striggio. Musical ostentation and bravura are concluded on each disc by some of Niquet’s own special bonnes bouches: Boismortier, D’Agincour, Marais and excerpts from his “other” Charpentier (Gustave). All accompanied by a sparkling apéritif from the conductor himself about how Le Concert Spirituel came to reach its 25th anniversary!

The Chamber production was almost unknown , and the very beatiful recordings of the ”Quarttetto Dorico” and “Il Tramonto”, poem for voice and string quartet realized by Barylli in 1960; were a sensational news in the general conformist music background. To make this record even more precious is the presence of an extraordinary artist: Sena Juriac; at that time she was at the top of her artistic career. The great Austro - Croatian soprano died in 2011, and this cd would be also a tribute to her art. A touching of the “Lauda per la natività del Signore”the version directed in 1961 by Nino Antonellini with Rome RAI groups ends this cd. These works are considered one of the highest level of Knapperrtbush career as conductor. The interpretations of Schumann’ Fourth Symphony and Rchard Strauss’ Tod and Verklärung could be considered as one of best performances of these two works now avaiable on cd. The Fourth Symphony has an epical grandeur and an expressive intensity equal only to the ones that Wilhem Furtwangler has reached. Istead Tod and Verklärung from the beginnig to the end is infused by a wild desire to claim that is immediately communicated to the listener, that made this cd one of the points of reference for Richard Strauss music.

NEOS 11213 Label Code 273 Price Code F DARMSTADT AURAL DOCUMENTS - BOX 2 John Cage – Communication ARTISTS: John Cage, voice and piano; David Tudor, piano Late summer, 1958. For the first time the American composer John Cage attended the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music. As so often in those years, he was accompanied by the pianist David Tudor, and together they gave the European premieres of his Music for Two Pianos, Winter Music and Variations I. John Cage’s first appearance in Darmstadt, in 1958, was a red-letter event in the history of music (his second and last appearance there would not take place until 1990, two years before his death). With his three lectures in particular he cracked open the little world of contemporary music, sowing the seeds for a rich, burgeoning, heterogeneous landscape of sound with many different concepts of what music is and can be. The Communication lecture of 1958 is, by the way, the only one of Cage’s three Darmstadt lectures that exists in the archive of the Darmstadt International Institute of Music in the form of an audio document, minus the opening minutes. There is no way of knowing today why the other two lectures, Changes and Indeterminacy, were not tape-recorded, or whether the recordings later disappeared.

The accomplished young British countertenor Alex Potter succeeds in displaying this wide emotional range in selected works for alto solo: he dazzles with astounding virtuosity in the motet Barbara, dira effera and soars in tender arcs of tension in his performance of the Christe eleison from a late unfi nished mass by Zelenka.

NEW PAN 10277 2 CD SET Label Code 250 Price Code F J.S.BACH Violin Concertos bwv 1041-1042 Psalms 51 bwv 1038 ARTSTS: Ars Antiqua Austria; Gunar Letzbor, Director The ensemble Ars Antiqua Austria under the direction of the violinist Gunar Letzbor have devoted this double CD to instrumental and vocal works by Johann Sebastian Bach with reissued recordings originating in 1995 and 1996. CD 1 focuses on the virtuoso potential of the violin featuring the two Violin Concertos BWV 1041 and BWV 1042 with Letzbor as soloist and the Double Violin concerto in which Daniel Sepec takes on the equal role of second soloist. These works are augmented by the Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 BWV 1049 in which the concertino group includes not only solo violin but also two recorders which in this recording are performed with great virtuosity and sinuous tone by Kees Boeke and Michael Oman. Bach’s arrangement of the Stabat Mater by Pergolesi known as Psalm 51 “Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden” BWV 1083 (CD 2) was only rediscovered during the last few years and is seldom performed. Bach replaced Pergolesi’s text of the Stabat Mater with the Lutheran translation of Psalm 51 and undertook a number of alterations to both vocal and instrumental parts. Bach attached great importance to the exact musical illustration of individual words of the text, producing an orchestral score with greater complexity and more heightened contrasts than the original Pergolesi. The special feature of this recording is the assignment of the St. Florianer Sängerknaben, a boys’ choir from which the excellent soloists have also been recruited. The CD is augmented by the Cantata “Himmelskönig, sei willkommen” BWV 182 in which the male vocal parts are sung by the Kepler Consort.

Today, it is difficult to imagine that the renown of the Czech composer Leopold Koželuh (1747-1818) in Vienna once equalled the fame Mozart enjoyed, that he was perceived as being on a par with Beethoven or Haydn. An accomplished composer, sought-after piano virtuoso and teacher in the services of the highest aristocratic circles, including the imperial family, Koželuh ardently championed the at the time still young and modern fortepiano. This instrument plays a pivotal role in his compositions, which is also the case of the sonatas presented on this recording, with the flute and cello rather complementing, commenting on and accompanying the exposed piano part. These Koželuh pieces were published in Vienna, as well as in London, Paris, Berlin and other cultural centres. Alongside the large number of sonatas with an “accompanying” violin, Koželuh’s oeuvre contains thirteen works in which he gave preference to the flute. The five most wonderful of these have been cherry-picked for this CD by three female virtuosos performing on period instruments. With their characteristic enthusiasm, they at least partially redeem our debt to the hitherto undeservedly marginalised Czech composer.

SUPRAPHON FL 4111 Label Code 332 Price Code C MUSIC FROM EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY PRAGUE JAN DISMAS ZELENKA: MISSA NATIVITATIS DOMINI, MAGNIFICAT, O MAGNUM MYSTERIUM, CHAVALTE BOHA SILNEHO ARTISTS: Barbora Sojková – soprano; Markéta Cukrová – alto; Tomáš Král – bass; Musica Florea (on period instruments); conductor: Marek Štryncl Recorded at the Church of Saints Simon and Jude, Prague, December 7–8, 2011. Following on from the previous two titles (Sepolcri, SU 4068-2; Melodrama de Sancto Wenceslao, SU4113-2), Supraphon’s Music From Eighteenth-Century Prague series now reflects Prague-related works by Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679–1745), whose pieces were performed at the city’s churches with increasing frequency from the middle of the 1730s. One such composition was Missa nativitatis, ZWV 8, preserved at the Saint Nicolas Church in Prague’s Lesser Town; another copy is from C. Ph. E. Bach’s personal effects, which indicates that this very piece was one of the two Zelenka masses his father Johann Sebastian had in his library. The aria of the Christmas motet O magnum mysterium is derived from the mentioned melodrama; Zelenka furnished it with a different text and added two flutes. The motet Chvalte Boha silného (Praise God Almighty), a setting of Psalm 150, is most likely the one and only Zelenka piece to a Czech text and has only been preserved in Prague copies. The Advent spirit is supplemented by with the Marian hymn Magnificat. Zelenka’s lesser-known works are once again presented within the acclaimed Supraphon series by Musica Florea, a renowned Baroque orchestra who stood at the beginning of the modern discovery of this exceptional composer.

Unanimously, critics agree in recognizing the '50 version of the best outcome, even if it comes from an edition without the recitatives spoken and technically limited. This beautiful edition of 1962, taken with stereo technique by the Austrian ORF, adds a key to the discography page of the great conductor, caught here in his better years, far from the minimalism and the phonic turgidity of the last years. The team of singers is dominated by the presence of the foremost artists of the sixties in Vienna: Gedda, Kunz, Lipp, Frick, Waechter, each of which had deepened Mozart characters in dozens of shows. Leontyne Price recorded it again in the '70s with Mehta and Karajan, but she will not reach the same power and freshness of our Roman version. Richard Tucker plays the role of Manrico only in this version, and certainly his Trovatore made and still makes history. Leonard Warren, who had recorded Il Trovatore with Bjoerling in 1952, remains one of the biggest Conte di Luna of the twentieth century; while Rosalind Elias belongs, with Simionato and Cossotto, to those interpreters that offer a modern, young and passionate image of Azucena. Last but not least, Arturo Basile, who reads Verdi with concrete and accuracy of the Italian tradition.
