Building Relationships
As we honored our Seniors this past Sunday night, I couldn’t help but think of
all of the new experiences and people that they will meet as they venture out to college
and the next chapter of their lives. They will be in new locations, unfamiliar surround-
ings and be looking for new ways to grow and connect with new people. They will be
forced to get outside of their comfort zones and they will grow into young adults. My
prayer is that they will stay strong in their faith and strong in their commitment to God.
My prayer is that they also connect as Christians to build new relationships.
We have all had different paths that led us Christ. At some point we have all
had to make the decision to answer the question of Christ and respond to him. But
then the real challenge begins doesn’t it? Christ tells us to connect with people. To
seek out new relationships. To not be comfortable with where we are and whom we
have become. We have to continue to grow.
Getting others to know Christ is about building relationships. People
have to get to know us to know Christ. We are supposed to be a reflection of him.
They have to understand why our lives are different. How are we to be different from
the world to attract others?
One of Jesus’ first sermons is recorded in Matthew 5 and at the beginning of his
message in verses 3-10 he gives us what we refer to as the “Beatitudes”. These 8 char-
acteristics describe the ideal disciple. It’s what should make us different from the
world. It is what should attract others to us so we can build relationships with them
and maybe introduce them to Christ. Ok, I understand these “blessings” but what does
that mean? It’s hard to bring others to Christ unless they see something different in us
that they recognize they need. If we act like the world or are no different than the
world in our speech, behavior, responses to happiness and loss, then the world will
never be attracted to us or to Christ. I am not saying that we do the “saving” by any
means, but in many cases we definitely do the “introducing”.
What are you doing to build relationships with new people? What are we do-
ing as a church to reach others on an individual level? Great lessons, great programs,
great Bible classes should be educational, uplifting and motivating. But church is just
the training ground. The mission is to build those relationships with others through
love to draw them closer to the ultimate relationship they need with Christ.
