One purpose of Qigong practice is to improve the practitioner’s Qi condition. Yuan Gong is a Qigong system designed to safely and effectively improve the quantity, quality, and flow of Qi throughout the body. When a person’s Qi condition improves, unhealthy Qi and information in the body transforms and normalizes. As a result, practitioners generally experience improved health and an increased sense of wellbeing. WHAT ARE QI REACTIONS? Part of the transformation process includes the clearing of unhealthy Qi and information retained in the body and consciousness. The clearing process can result in Qi reactions. This is especially true when the amount and flow of Qi are improved quickly and intensely. Qi reactions can be considered a normal part of Qigong and other practices designed to work directly on Qi. At the initial stages of Yuan Gong practice, Qi reactions can often manifest as a flaring up of the symptoms of existing problems, or the recurrence of symptoms of old problems. Qi reactions can take place in any part of the body, including organs. For example, when clearing occurs in the lungs, there can be flu-like symptoms or the release of phlegm. When clearing occurs in the digestive system, there can be nausea or diarrhea. These are common Qi reactions. Qi reactions can also manifest on the emotional level. For example, one can get angry or feel sad for no reason. This is because the body retains the Qi and information created by unhealthy emotions, especially those that are intense or frequently experienced. Yuan Gong practice can shake loose old information, especially the methods that work on the organs, which are strongly related to emotions. Qi reactions can also occur on the heart or consciousness level. This type of reaction may manifest as getting stuck in certain negative thought patterns or behaviors. This is relatively rare for beginners. The exception is when one is actively working on the patterns of the heart or consciousness or receiving information for work on patterns in a strong Qifield.

When a Qi react ion occurs, Yuan Gong pract i t ioners have the abi l i ty to help the process of transformation and heal ing go smoothly and as quickly as possible. How is this accomplished?

1. Recognize and Accept Qi Reactions as a Natural Part of Growth

I t is important to note that , when pract icing Yuan Gong, most posit ive changes take place without causing Qi react ions. I f they do occur, an essential part of deal ing with them properly includes understanding the function and purpose of reactions. Also accepting reactions as a normal part of working on Qi can help the pract it ioner navigate them in a healthy, proactive manner.

2. Be Calm and Posit ive

Maintain a good state while experiencing a Qi reaction by remaining relaxed and calm. View reactions as a posit ive sign of growth and development. Being worr ied or upset may reinforce the unhealthy Qi and information, which may obstruct the transformation and heal ing process. Being calm and posit ive wil l ease the natural process of clearing unhealthy Qi and information and help i t go smoothly and more quickly.

3. Use Yuan Gong Practice to Assist the Process

Continuing Qigong pract ice wil l assist transformation and heal ing. The pract ice to use depends on the reaction. For example, a less demanding pract ice such as pull ing Qi or Dantian breathing may be more helpful i f the reaction is on the physical level . I f the reaction is on the emotional or consciousness level , a moving pract ice such as squats, Ren Yuan or Tian Yuan may be more helpful . Of course, i f one has an emotional or mental react ion, once i t dissipates, i t is necessary to work on the underlying causes, especial ly the patterns.

How about when a symptom is a real symptom, rather than a Qi reaction? How do we deal with i t? The answer is exactly the same: be relaxed and calm and continue to use Yuan Gong to work on the unhealthy Qi and information. Please note that we are not saying Yuan Gong pract ice is the only way to deal with a health problem or symptom. When advising the continued pract ice of Yuan Gong, we don’t mean to exclude the use of other modal i t ies for the purpose of diagnosis or treatment.
