In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our film opening develops the conventions used in many supernatural and psychological horror films. This is because our protagonist is a priest, which one of many conventions in horror movies; this is the case in ‘Annabelle’ as one of the main protagonists is a priest, who fell victim to Annabelle and was killed.

Another convention our film opening follows is having a human female antagonist. This is similar to many blockbuster horror films as well as independent films. ‘The Ring’ uses a female protagonist, as does ‘The Grudge’, ‘Carrie’ and ‘Misery’.

One common convention of a horror is that the story will take place in a rural setting, such as a country lane, remote villages and lakes. Our film opening adheres to this convention, as it is set down a remote village path.

We also did not have dialogue in our opening scene, this is also similar to the very specific psychological horror genre.

Our opening was not as violent as some other film openings we researched. Our opening did not contain any blood or mass killings that may occur in other horror films.
