Friends,

I'm writing this the morning after experiencing our Ash Wednesday service. If you weren't there, you missed a powerful beginning to the season of Lent.

Lent is the 40-day season that starts on Ash Wednesday and ends the Saturday before Easter. It's 40 days because we don't count Sundays. I know that's odd, but we don't count Sundays because we should consider every Sunday a "mini Easter" and let the Sundays be a celebratory break in our self-reflection during Lent.

The word Lent comes from the Latin "lencten", meaning spring. Spring symbolizes new life and growth, so we should use these 40 days to look at our lives to determine what is holding us back from the growth God has for us. It's become a tradition to give up something for Lent - chocolate, coffee, french fries, or Facebook seem to be popular choices. But there is no single right way to observe Lent.

Instead of giving up something, how about adding something? If you aren't reading your Bible daily, how about adding daily devotions to your days between now and Easter? If you aren't attending worship consistently, how about making a commitment to attend every Sunday between now and Easter Sunday? If you've never served in a ministry, how about finding a place to serve between now and Easter Sunday? (If you need help getting connected to an opportunity to serve, just send me an email or call.)

I am excited about the Easter season at Shady Grove this year! As with most things in life, you'll get out of it what you put in -- so let's be all in for Lent as we prepare and celebrate Easter 2018!

I hope everyone has enjoyed meeting new people through their Table for 8 group,

and is excited to continue. Beginning in April we will assign new groups and as a re-

minder, each group meets 4 times for dinner (or lunch) over 6 months. That’s it! No

Bible study or mission project, just food. You can sign up as a couple or a single.

March 11 and 18, with a March 21

deadline. Don’t pass up your chance to

get to know someone new!
