PUNE, (IANS) Luxury car maker Mercedes Benz India recently introduced the C Class 250 d sedan in the mid-size luxury segment and announced its local production. "The all new C- Class completely redefined the mid-size luxury sedan segment in India and created for itself a new territory of supremacy," Roland Folger, MD and CEO of Mercedes Benz India, said in a statement. Priced at Rs.44.36 lakh (ex-showroom Pune), the sedan is equipped with 9G - TRONIC transmission and a 2,142 cc diesel engine capable of producing 500 Nm of torque with a speed of 0-100 km per hour in 6.6 seconds. Other features include LED Intelligent Light System, Garmin Map Pilot, 17 inch alloy wheels and ambient lighting among others. Mercedes Benz already sells C 200 and C 220 models under the C Class and has commenced local production of 250 d to catch up with the demand and cut down the waiting period. "The overwhelming response for the new C-Class drove us to commence local manufacturing of the C 250 d simultaneously with its introduction in India," added Folger. The new coupe is going for a more upmarket character, featur- ing a longer and lower body. For the interior, Mercedes has adopted a similar layout as seen in the latest C-Class sedan. Atop the dash is a protruding infotainment screen that houses most of the on-board controls, which can then be navigated via the rotary control system. With 80mm added to the wheelbase, the new model offers more interior space. As for the under-bonnet stuff, there will be various turbo-diesel and petrol engines on offer, similar to the C-Class sedan. Petrol variants span from a C 180 1.6-litre producing 115kW, to a 135kW C 200, 155kW C 250, and 180kW C 300. A C 450 is yet to be confirmed but we can expect it to join the range later down the track, featuring the 270kW twin-turbo V6 as seen in the sedan. The diesel lineup, at least in some regions, will include a 125kW and 150kW unit. TORONTO - According to a TD Economics report the Canadian exist- ing home sales rose by 0.8% m/m in January, and were up 18.7% from last year, with sales trending near 2007 peak levels for a second consecutive month. Listings rose only 0.5% in the month, pushing the sales-to-listings ratio up to 59.5% in February, up 0.2 percentage points from the prior month, on the brink of the 60% threshold often consid- ered a sellers' market. The rising degree of bargaining power held by sellers has pushed average existing home prices up 16.4% year-over-year. The metric was up 8.5% year-over-year in a quality adjusted basis. Markets in BC and Ontario continued to drive the real estate market in February. All of the markets currently in seller's territory (which make up just under half of Canadian markets) are found these two provinces. In fact, stripping away British Columbia and Ontario markets, average existing home prices were down by 1.4% y/y. The MLS HPI rose 22% in Vancouver and 11% in Toronto, where price pressures are starting to become broader across single-family homes as well as condos. This contrasts to Calgary, where home prices were down 3.5% from last year. The Montreal market has also been gaining momentum in recent months, with sales up 15% from year ago levels, but high inventory levels have kept the market in balanced territory and price growth under wraps. The themes of Canadian housing that were apparent over the recent years are likely to remain in 2016. Low interest rates will offset slightly rising unemployment which we expect will nudge up to 7.5% by mid- year. The weak economic conditions will likely prevail in the Prairies where the unemployment rate already spiked. On the other hand, low financing costs will be the key driver in markets that are more fairly balanced, like Montreal and Halifax. There is a little less certainty as to the interest rate channel in Toronto and Vancouver, where sharp home price gains have already eroded many of the benefits of a low interest rate environment. Housing affordability is deteriorating in both markets, and alongside new mort- gage qualification rules, should temper demand in these hot markets through the rest of 2016. Overall, we expect Canadian home price growth to slow to below 3% y/y this year, but prices in Toronto and Vancouver should continue to grow well above that pace for the re- mainder of the year.

SOON, CLOTHES THAT CLEANTHEMSELVES WITH LIGHTSYDNEY, (IANS) The day when you can look tidy even withoutwashing your clothes does not seem too distant as research-ers, including one of Indian origin, have developed a technol-ogy to make textiles clean themselves within less than sixminutes when put them under a light bulb or out in the sun.The researchers at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, have developed a cheap and efficient new way to grow specialnanostructures -- which can degrade organic matter when ex-posed to light -- directly onto textiles."There's more work to do to before we can star t throwing outour washing machines, but this advance lays a strong founda-tion for the future development of fully self-cleaning textiles,"said researcher Rajesh Ramanathan. The research paper waspublished in the journal Advanced Materials Inter faces. Thework paves the way towards nano-enhanced textiles that canspontaneously clean themselves of stains and grime simplyby being put under light. The process developed by the teamhad a variety of applications for catalysis-based industriessuch as agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and natural prod-ucts, and could be easily scaled up to industrial levels,Ramanathan said. "The advantage of textiles is they alreadyhave a 3D structure so they are great at absorbing light, whichin turn speeds up the process of degrading organic matter," heexplained. The researchers worked with copper and silver-based nanostructures, which are known for their ability to ab-sorb visible light. When the nanostructures are exposed to light, they receive an energy boost that creates "hot electrons".

DEPRESSED? BLAME IT ONSOCIAL MEDIANEW YORK, (IANS) Are you the one who is always clickingnew selfies to be posted on Instagram or who updates thetiniest details of life on Facebook? Chances are that you are prob-ably depressed! According to a new study, the more time youngadults spend on social media, the more likely they are to be de-pressed. Spending more time on social media may increase the riskof exposure to cyber-bullying or other similar negative interactions, which can cause feelings of depression. Also, unlimited use of socialmedia could fuel "Internet addiction," a proposed psychiatric condi-tion closely associated with depression. The results of the studyshowed that on an average the participants used social media a totalof 61 minutes per day and visited various social media accounts 30times per week. Compared with those who checked socialmedia least frequently, par ticipants who repor ted most fre-quent checking throughout the week had 2.7 times the likeli-hood of depression. Similarly, par ticipants who spent the mosttotal time on social media throughout the day had 1.7 times therisk of depression, when compared to peers who spent lesstime on social media. The research is published online in thejournal Depression and Anxiety. However, exposure to socialmedia also may cause depression, which could then in turnfuel more use of social media, the researchers pointed out.

TOKYO, (IANS) Love sushi? Your craving for it is likely to helpyou live longer. According to a new study, close adherence toJapanese diet can reduce the risk of death from all causes anddeath from cardiovascular disease, par ticularly stroke. Thestudy suggests that strictly following the Japanese diet, whichinvolves a balanced consumption of grains, vegetables, fruits, fish and meat, can contribute to a higher life expectancy. In 2005, the Japanese government developed spinning top - aJapanese food guide - to illustrate the balance and quantity offood in the daily Japanese diet. The results of the study showedthat both men and women with higher scores on the food guide -which indicates better adherence - were found to have a 15 percent lower total mor tality rate over 15 years. The lower mor tal-ity rate can be the result of a reduction in cerebrovascular

disease deaths, the researchers pointed out. Our findingssuggest that balanced consumption of energy, grains, veg-etables, fruits, meat, fish, eggs, soy products, dairy products, confectionaries, and alcoholic beverages can contribute tolongevity by decreasing the risk of death, predominantly fromcardiovascular disease, explained Kayo Kurotani, researcher atthe National Centre for Global Health and Medicine in Japan. The study, published by The BMJ, examines the relation be-tween adherence to the food guide and total and cause specificmor tality. The team used data from detailed food and lifestylequestionnaires completed by 36,624 men and 42,920 womenaged 45-75. None of the par ticipants had a history of cancer, stroke, hear t disease or chronic liver disease - and each werefollowed for 15 years.

BLONDES ARE JUST AS SMART AS OTHERSNEW YORK, (IANS) The jokes about "dumb blondes" are, well, just jokes! Researchers have foundthat the average IQ of blondes may actually be slightly higher than those with other hair colours. While jokesabout blondes may seem harmless to some, they can have real-world implications, said study author JayZagorsky from The Ohio State University in the US."Research shows that stereotypes often have an impact on hiring, promotions and other social experiences,"Zagorsky said. "This study provides compelling evidence that there shouldn't be any discrimination againstblondes based on their intelligence," Zagorsky pointed out.The study involved 10,878 US women. Data from the study came from the US National Longitudinal Survey ofYouth 1979 (NLSY79), a national survey of people who were between 14 and 21 years old when they were firstinterviewed in 1979. In 1980, participants in the NLSY79 took the Armed Forces Qualification Test, or AFQT,which is used by the Pentagon to determine the intelligence of all recruits. The overall AFQT score is based on word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, math knowledge andarithmetic reasoning. The resulting findings showed that blonde-haired White women had an average IQ of103.2, compared to 102.7 for those with brown hair, 101.2 for those with red hair and 100.5 for those with blackhair. Blonde women were slightly more likely to be in the highest IQ category than those with other hair colors, and slightly less likely to be in the lowest IQ category, the findings showed. The study, published in the journal Economics Bulletin, could not say whether there are any genetic relation-ships between hair colour and intelligence, but Zagorsky did find one fact that could at least par tiallyexplain why blondes showed slightly higher intelligence -- they grew up in homes with morereading material than did those with any other hair colour.

STRESS DURING PREGNANCY LINKEDTO LOW BIRTH WEIGHT OF BABIES

NEW YORK, (IANS) Even beforea woman becomes pregnant, herstress physiology may predict alower-bir th weight of baby -- lessthan 2.5 kg, said a new study. Thef indings revealed that themother's stress physiology be-fore she even conceives is alsoimpor tant. I t suggests that awoman's health and life circum-stances before her pregnancy,

especially chronic stress, mattergreatly."We found that the same cor tisolpattern that has been linked withchronic stress is associated withdelivering a baby that weighs lessat bir th," said lead author Chris-tine Guardino from the Universityof California in the US. Research-ers claim this study first evi-dence that shows maternal cor ti-

sol -- a hormone the body re-leases in response to stressfulevents -- patterns before concep-tion influence the weight of thebaby. The study, published in thejournal Heal th Psychology, analysed 142 women, whichlooked at how chronic stress af-fects new parents and their ba-bies in which they provided dailysaliva samples."Women's cor tisol levels typicallyincrease by two to four times dur-ing a normal pregnancy and thatincrease plays an impor tant rolein a baby's growth and develop-ment, said co-author Chris DunkelSchetter. But when cor tisol lev-els are e levated beyond thatrange, the effects can be bothimmediate -- because elevatedcor tisol levels reduce blood flowto the foetus -- and longer-lasting-- influencing the child's responseto stress later in life, Schetterexplained. The results showedthat the women were likelier togive bir th to lower-weight babies.

Calcium can ensure good night's sleepTOKYO, (IANS) Calcium has been known long as good for our bones, but it might also be the keyto a good night's sleep, says a new study, unveiling a new theory how sleep works. The studyshowed that sleep depends on the activity of calcium inside neurons. Moreover, it was also revealed that a mechanism regulated by calcium ions is indeed respon-sible for controlling the sleep duration. The study, published in the journal Neuron, contributes tothe understanding and treatment of sleep disorders like insomania and sleep apnea and otherassociated neuro-degenerative diseases.Over a life time the amount of sleep needed gets gradually reduced, in both animals and humans.Sleep allows the body to recover from the effects of daily life, such as removing waste products

from the brain and restoring the immune system, and may use the time to process experiencesand lay down long-term memories. However, the fundamental reasons for sleep and the mechanisms by which sleep duration isregulated remain largely unknown. "Although sleep is a fundamental physiologic function, itsmechanism is still a mystery," said corresponding author Hiroki Ueda from the University ofTokyo in Japan. The team developed a computational model of sleep and identified seven genesresponsible for causing mice to stay awake or fall asleep.

Keep an eye on your kid's calorie-intakeNEW YORK, (IANS) Most children overeat when served large por tions of calorie-dense popularfoods -- but manipulating calorie-content and por tion size of children aged three to five cansubstantially reduce their overall caloric consumption, a study has found.Researchers found that caregivers can lower the calorie density (CD) of children's meals bychoosing palatable lower-CD products l ike gr i l led chicken pieces and reduced-sugarapplesauce."With acceptable and readily available products, strategies to reduce calories can be easilyimplemented in homes and childcare settings and can be strategically combined with changesin por tion size by serving larger por tions of lower-CD foods with smaller por tions of higher-CD foods," said co-author Barbara Rolls from Pennsylvania State University, US."These strategies that moderate the effects of por tion size are practical and effective inreducing calorie intake. However, policy makers and food producers need to provide theresources and products to help parents and caregivers counter pervasive influences," Rollsadded in the paper published in the journal Physiology & Behavior. The team varied the por tion size and CD, or number of calories per bite, for lunch served tochildren in their normal eating environment. Lunch was served in three childcare centresonce a week for six weeks to 120 children aged three to five. The lunch menu had either lower-calorie or higher-calorie versions of chicken, macaroni andcheese, vegetables, applesauce, ketchup and milk. When served a combination of largerpor tion and higher CD meals, the children's intake increased by 175 calories, or 79 percent, ina single meal.

Exercise may delay brain aging by 10 yearsNEW YORK, (IANS) Want to keep a sharp memory in old age? A study has found that moderate tointense regular exercise in old age may delay brain aging by 10 years. According to the study, thepeople who repor ted light to no exercise -- their brain aged 10 years more than the people whorepor ted moderate to intense exercise."The number of people over the age of 65 in the US is on the rise, meaning the public health burdenof thinking and memory problems will likely grow," said study author Clinton B Wright from Univer-sity of Miami, US. "Our study showed that for older people, getting regular exercise may beprotective, helping them keep their cognitive abilities longer," Wright added in the paper publishedin the online journal of Neurology. The team looked at data on 876 people who were asked how long and how often they exercisedduring the two weeks prior to that date. An average of seven years later, each person was giventests of memory and thinking skills and a brain MRI and five years after that they took the memoryand thinking tests again.Of the group, 90 percent repor ted light exercise or no exercise, which included activities such aswalking and yoga. They were placed in the low activity group. The remaining 10 percent repor tedmoderate to high intensity exercise, which included activities such as running, aerobics, or calis-thenics. They were placed in the high activity group. The findings showed, low activity levels showed a greater decline over five years compared tothose with high activity levels on tests of how fast they could perform simple tasks and how manywords they could remember from a list. The difference was equal to that of 10 years of aging. Thedifference also remained after researchers adjusted for other factors that could affect brain health, such as smoking, alcohol use, high blood pressure and body mass index.

PROLONGED DAILY SITTING CAUSES FOURPER CENT OF DEATHS GLOBALLY: STUDY

NEW YORK (IANS) Sitting for morethan three hours per day is respon-sible for nearly four per cent of deaths

in the world, shows an analysis ofsurveys from 54 countries around theworld. Reducing sitting time to less

than three hours per day would in-crease life expectancy by an aver-age of 0.2 years, the researchers

estimated. In order to properly as-sess the damaging effects of sitting, the study analysed behavioural sur-veys from 54 countries around theworld and matched them with statis-tics on population size, actuarial tableand overall deaths. Researchersfound that sitting time significantlyimpacted all-cause mor tality, ac-counting for approximately 433,000,or 3.8 per cent, of all deaths acrossthe 54 nations in the study. They alsofound that sitting had higher impacton mortality rates in the WesternPacific region, followed by European,Eastern Mediterranean, American, and Southeast Asian countries, re-spectively. The findings were pub-lished in the American Journal of Pre-ventive Medicine. While research-ers found that sitting contributed toall-cause mortality, they also esti-mated the impact from reduced sit-ting time independent of moderate tovigorous physical activity.

Weight loss with protein-richdiet linked to better sleepNEW YORK, (IANS) Overweight middle-aged adults losingweight with a protein-rich diet are more likely to sleep better, than those who are losing weight consuming a normal quantityof proteins, say a new study."Most research looks at the effects of sleep on diet and weightcontrol, and our research flipped that question to ask what arethe effects of weight loss and diet -- specifically the amount ofprotein -- on sleep," said Wayne Campbell from Purdue Univer-sity in the US."We found that while consuming a lower calorie diet with ahigher amount of protein, sleep quality improves for middle-age adults. This sleep quality is better compared to those wholost the same amount of weight while consuming a normalamount of protein," Campbell added in a paper published in theAmerican Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study analysed 44 overweight or obese par ticipants whoconsumed either a normal-protein or a higher-protein weightloss diet. The par ticipants completed a survey to rate the qual-ity of their sleep every month throughout the study. The findingsshowed that those who consumed more protein while losingweight repor ted an improvement in sleep quality after three andfour months of dietary intervention."Shor t sleep duration and compromised sleep quality frequentlylead to metabolic and cardiovascular diseases and prematuredeath," said study's first author Jing Zhou. "Given the high preva-lence of sleep problems it's impor tant to know how changes todiet and lifestyle can help improve sleep," Zhou stated.

Vitamin C rich diet may slowdown cataractsLONDON, (IANS) Eating a diet rich in vitamin C may slow theprogression of cataract -- a condition that may lead to blind-ness, reveals a study, adding that environmental factors anddiet also influence cataract more than genetic factors. The findings showed that those participants who had a higher in-take of vitamin C were associated with a 33 percent risk reductionof cataract progression and had "clearer" lenses 10 years after thestudy than those who had consumed less vitamin C as part of theirdiet. "The findings of this study could have significant impact, par-ticularly for the ageing population globally, by suggesting that simpledietary changes such as increased intake of fruit and vegetablesas part of a healthier diet could help protect them from cataracts,"said lead study author Chris Hammond from the Kings CollegeLondon. "While we cannot avoid getting older, diabetes and smoking arealso risk factors for this type of cataract, and so a healthy balanced diet andlifestyle generally should reduce the risk of needing a cataract operation,"Hammond added. Cataract is a common condition in which the lens of theeye becomes cloudy as a result of oxidation over time. The study, publishedin the journal Ophthalmology, looked at the progression of cataracts in theeyes of 324 pairs of female twins over 10 years by examining photo-graphs of the participant's lenses that allowed them to analyse thelevel of opacity of the lens in detail. Participant intake of vitamin Cwas also measured using a food questionnaire.

Know who is most likely to help you at officeNEW YORK, (IANS) Shedding new light on how status affects work-place relationships, a new study has found that workers are mostlikely to help colleagues who are moderately distant from themselvesin status -- both above and below them. "The sweet spot for helpingseems to be those who are moderately distant from you in status,"said study co-author Rober t Lount, associate professor of managementand human resources at The Ohio State University in the US.The study did not examine why colleagues who were moderately distantin status were most likely to help each other. But it may be related to howworkers perceive their own status within the company, lead researcherSarah Doyle from The Ohio State University noted. "Someone near you in

status poses more of a threat" Doyle said. Those who are far above orbelow you in status could require a lot more time and effort to help, whichcould hurt your own job performance. Those colleagues who are moder-ately distant do not pose much of a threat and offer the best opportunityfor workers to demonstrate their willingness to cooperate with their team-mates. The findings appeared online in the journal Academy of Manage-ment Discoveries. The researchers conducted two separate studies --one in a real workplace -- and both reached similar conclusions. In thefirst study, 267 undergraduate students read a work scenario in whichthey imagined they were par t of a 15-person work group in a largesales organization.
