La-Z-Boy Midwest Celebrates Milestone Accomplishments

Neosho, Missouri

15 Million Chairs, 1.5 Million Hours and Zero Landfill La-Z-Boy Midwest, Neosho,

Missouri, celebrated three milestone accomplishments on May 29th.

The team of over 750 employees at the 13-acre facility celebrated the production of their 15 millionth chair, 1.5 million hours of working safely without a lost-time injury and achieving “Zero-Landfill” status.

Bill Snow, VP & GM of the facility noted, “Just a few short years ago, Neosho generated over one million pounds of waste per month with over 150,000 pounds going to the landfill each month. An ongoing process of training, education and finding additional

avenues for re-use of varying supplies enabled us to now recycle 100%!”

Snow pointed out that the Noesho team is also on track to go past the 2-million hour mark without a lost-time injury. That would be the second time this level was reached in the plant’s history.

The plant was opened in 1970 and now has over 570,000-sq.-ft. of space.

“Without the hard work and daily support of our great employees, La-Z-Boy Midwest would not have been able to attain these landmark achievements.”

Dignitaries on hand for the event included: Kurt Darrow, La-

The Wichita Manufacturers Association (WMA) has partnered once again with Wichita Area Techni-cal College (WATC) to provide a total of sixteen

$1,000 scholarships in 2013. Applicants are selected based on their pursuit of manufacturing education at the National Center for Aviation Training, Wichita State University, WATC and other local schools, along with a written essay, GPA and other criteria. Students are encouraged to continue in manufacturing careers upon graduation.

The WMA Scholarship Chair, Steve Flesher of InterAct Training Group, coordinates the scholarship committee, as well as WMA presence at the local high school career fairs. The 2013 WMA Executive Board is lead by President Jim Callaway, President of Powder-Tech, LLC.

WMA awarded 5 scholarships in 2012, awarded from the WMA general scholarship fund. But 2013 brought a significant applicant pool, with over 30 appli-cants for the scholarships. Because so many of the ap-plicants were well qualified, Steve Flesher, WMA Schol-arship Chair, approached the WMA members and asked for additional scholarship funds. Five WMA member companies stepped forward with a total of $8,525.00 in additional scholarship funds for 2013 awards.

The scholarship winners were honored during an awards ceremony May 10th at Rolling Hills Country Club. Congressman Mike Pompeo was the keynote speaker and delivered comments regarding the outlook for manufacturing employment in Kansas.

Waterjet technology manufactur-er TECHNI Waterjet®, Lenexa, Kan-sas, has introduced its NXT genera-tion of electric servo pumps (ESPs). The Quantum NXT® produces 20% more power than previous models.

“With this NXT generation ESP, Techni Waterjet has addressed the

challenges of increasing demands for cutting speeds and compatibility by waterjet technology users world-wide,” company director Darren Reukers says. “Since releasing our revolutionary ESP technology in 2009, we gained a lot of market knowledge and field experience which have been used to develop the NXT generation of ultra-high pres-sure waterjet pumps.”

By increasing the pump’s power output, TECHNI enables customers to cut any suitable material at faster speeds, while the improved lubrica-tion and cooling system guarantee durability and low maintenance costs. “The costs for running an old intensifier pump greatly increase from year four,” Reukers explains. “From here it makes business sense

Performance Contracting Inc.(PCI), Lenexa, Kansas, offers cus-tom metal fabrication services.

The 50+ year-old business specializes in laser cutting and custom short production runs..

The facility is just one of 50 PCI contracting offices across the country that offers a wide variety of industrial services. PCI’s office in Lenexa houses a specialized metal shop that has served the nuclear power industry for over 40 years with it’s own product line. Recently, PCI has decided to offer its metal fabrication services to industrial and commercial custom-ers as well. New customers in this area have been in the food service industry, heavy & light gauge manufacturing, dept. of defense contractors, architectural sheet metal, and customers needing on-site metal fabrication and welding services for plant maintenance. PCI also performs a significant amount of laser cutting services for other metal shops and machine shops in the area.

Equipment at the Lenexa facil-ity includes an industry leading 7,000-watt Trumpf laser cutting system (one of the most powerful production laser cutters in North America) that can cut stainless steel up to 1.25” thick.

“Our laser cutter allows us to cut thicknesses that are typically reserved for other cutting methods that be slower or less precise,” stat-ed PCI’s sales manager Bart Yoder. “We have found that the 7,000-watt system can cut both thick and thin metal at superior speeds without sacrificing quality.”

“We have always excelled in this service-driven industry,” continued Yoder. “We take quick turnaround jobs and short produc-

Each year our free enterprise system is less “free” after more regu-lations are imposed. Whether these laws and regulations are good or bad is debatable, but nevertheless a bit of our freedom has been chipped away.

Every new law restricts some-one’s freedom. But recently regula-tions have come down like rain.

Ted Cruz, U.S. Senator from Texas, is a strong advocate for free enterprise and spoke at Hillsdale College’s 161st Commencement on May 11. His topic was: The Miracle of Freedom. Some of Senator Cruz’s remarks are reprinted below with permission from Imprimis, a publica-tion of Hillsdale College.

In the history of mankind, free-dom has been the exception. Gov-erned by kings and queens, human beings were told that the power starts at the top and flows down.

The British began a revolu-tion against this way of thinking in 1215. It was embodied in the Magna Carta...That revolution reached full flower in 1787 in a Constitution that began from two radical premises.

The first is that our rights come not from kings or queens–or even presidents–but from God. Second, the Constitution’s founders inverted the understanding of sovereignty. Power comes not from the top down, but up, from “We the People.” Gov-erning authority for those in political office is limited to set periods subject to elections.

As James Madison explained...: “If men were angels, no government would be necessary...In framing a government which is to be admin-istered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first

enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself.”

I can assure you there are no angels in Washington, D.C. And that is why Thomas Jefferson said “the chains of the Constitution” should bind the mischief of government. Only when government is limited are rights protected, the rule of law honored, and freedom allowed to flourish.

And with those as our foundation, what has freedom wrought? Simply put, the American free market system is the greatest engine for prosperity and opportunity that the world has ever seen.

Over the last two centuries, U.S. growth rates have far outpaced growth rates throughout the world, producing per capita incomes about six times greater than the world aver-age and 50% higher than those in Europe.

But most importantly, freedom produces opportunity. And I would encourage each of you to embrace what I call opportunity conservatism, which means that we should look at and judge every proposed domestic policy with a laser focus on how it impacts the least among us–how it helps the most vulnerable Americans climb the economic ladder.

Historically, our nation has en-joyed remarkable economic mobility. About 60% of the households that were in the lowest quintile in 1999 were in the higher quintile ten years later. During the same decade, almost 40% of the richest households fell to a lower quintile.

This is a nation where you can rise or fall. It is a nation where you can climb the economic ladder based not on who you are born to, or what class you are born into, but based on your talents, your passion, your perseverance, and the content of your character.

I remember some time ago

when former Texas Senator Phil Gramm was participating in a Senate hearing on socialized medicine. A witness explained that government would best take care of people. Senator Gramm gently demurred and said, “I care more about my family than anyone else does.” The witness said, “Oh no, Senator. I care as much about your children.” Senator Gramm smiled and said, Really? What are their names?

It is precisely because eco-nomic freedom and opportunity outperform centralized planning and regulation that so many mil-lions have risked everything for a chance at the American dream.

Fifty-five years ago, my father fled Cuba, where he had been imprisoned and tortured–including having his teeth kicked out–as a teenager. Today my father is a pas-tor in Dallas.

When he landed in Austin, Texas, in 1957, he was 18. He couldn’t speak a word of English. He had $100 sewn into his under-wear. He got a job washing dishes and made 50 cents an hour. He worked seven days a week and paid his way through the Univer-sity of Texas, and then he got a job, and then he went on to start a small business.

Now imagine if, at that time, the minimum wage had been two dollars an hour. He might never have had the opportunity to get that dishwashing job and work his way through school and work his way up from there.

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve thanked God that some well-meaning person didn’t greet him when he landed in Austin and put his arm around him and say: “Let me take care of you. Let me make you dependent on govern-
