PULSEHISTORY
The Ecclesfield Parish Council region has a rich and proudhistory, recorded over time in a great number of historicalphotographs, films and documents. But due to the nature of the parish which covers 22 sq km
around Burncross, Chapeltown, Grenoside, High Green and muchof Ecclesfield this material has been spread over several locationsand has lacked a single, comprehensive archive. Until now.
In 2012, parish clerk David Morton and local councillorsrecognised that something should be done to pull this informationtogether, and make it available to all those who wished to access it,by working with and building on the efforts of several active localhistory and conservation groups.
After 18 months of talks and meetings, they proceeded with asuccessful Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) bid and in 2014 weregranted 82,400 to help record and preserve this history. They havebeen working hard ever since to build a clear picture of what lifewas and is like in this corner of north Sheffield.
Supported by project co-ordinator Christine Handley, theEcclesfield Civil Parish Past and Present Archiving Project as it isofficially known is collating and digitising a huge amount ofmaterial to create an online resource for schools, individuals andother groups to learn more about their local history.
As the project dedicated torecording and preserving
Ecclesfield parishs historyprepares to reach its end later thisyear, Stephanie Burns spoke to
project co-ordinator ChristineHandley to discover exactly what
she and a dedicated team of localvolunteers have been up to.

Thousands ofphotographs, prints, books, newspapers, diaries, maps, films and audio materialsfrom the mid-19th centuryonwards are being collectedand either scanned in toappear online or put into adigital archive to preservethem for use in the future. So far, around 2,500photographs and images, documents and records, andlots of other material, havebeen gathered anddigitised.
Because its a locallybased archive, its very muchmade of up what is ofinterest to the community, explained Christine. Its arich tapestry reflecting past and present, the everyday and thespecial.
Christine has been employed part-time by the parish councilsince October 2014. She has been working closely with the areasmain local history groups the Chapeltown and High GreenArchive, Ecclesfield Conservation & Local History Group, Grenoside& District Local History Group and Heritage High Green to co-ordinate all aspects of the project, organise activities and promote theirwork and events.
One of the key features of the parishsheritage is Newton Chambers Ltd andthe project aims to recognise not onlythe impact it had on the local area itemployed 8,000 people at its height but its position at the forefront ofnational technological change in ironand coal-related products. This includesthe companys involvement in thesummer-long Festival of Britain in 1951,which celebrated the beginning of anew modern era. The project hasalready discovered some material in the
parish archive relating to the local festivals that took place atGrenoside and High Green and the role that local companies suchas Newton Chambers played in the construction of the site, andthey are eager to find more.
Its so exciting when people come to us with a carrier bag ofstuff, explained Christine. People dont think well be interestedbut we open a bag and there is all of this wonderful stuff. They are
touched that they can help and welove being able to rescue items thatmight otherwise have just beenthrown away. What we say is, justbecause youre not interested initems, it doesnt mean the projectisnt. Whatever you have, get intouch and never assume its not ofinterest.
The projects most recent focushas been Chapeltown Baths, which isset to close its doors for the last timeon 24 May. This facility the firstmunicipal swimming baths to bebuilt by a parish council after WWII opened in 1961 and, with the >>>

financial support of both Sheffield City Council andEcclesfield Parish Council, has been run by a communityenterprise for well over 20 years.
Local children have been involved with the baths since itsinception, even protesting its potential closure in the 90s,and Christine believed it was only fitting that this traditioncontinued until its end. She was therefore delighted whenKS3 pupils at Ecclesfield School agreed to get involved. Co-ordinated by English teacher Charlie Pritchard-Brennan, thestudents looked at contrasting factual writing, analysing theopening day brochure, creative story writing andinterviewing people to record their memories.
As well as the local history groups, schools, churches, libraries, Scouts and Guides that are already involved,Christine is encouraging individuals to contribute. Its abroad brush project so there are lots of ways that peoplecan help out, she said. Were training volunteers so theyhave the skills to carry on the work beyond the official enddate of the project this October from IT skills tointerviewing techniques.
She is also eager to impress upon people the presentaspect of the project. One of the things I keep saying topeople is that what were doing today is history and weneed to record it properly. We take lots of photographs inthis modern age but its about what really captures theessence of the current time. So, while its great to gathermaterial from 100 years ago, we also feel that preservingthe present is just as important as reminiscing about the past.
Its not too late to make your mark on the project. If youd like to lend a hand withany aspect whether its scanning in photographs, interviewing local people, sourcing additional material or helping out at events contact Christine [email protected]. In the meantime, check out the website(www.ecclesfield-district-archives.com) and Facebook page to see what the projecthas achieved so far.
One of thethings
I keep sayingto people is
that whatwere doing
today ishistory andwe need to record
it properly.

PROMOTIONSHEFFIELD GLAZING
Dont let the sightof misted unitsspoil the look ofyour house thissummer callGraham atSheffield Glazing.
Sheffield Glazings owner Graham Warsop certainly knowshis stuff when it comes to all things glazing. Havingworked on both the manufacturing and installation sidesof the business and now specialising in installation heknows this industry inside out and is proud to offer fantasticproducts at very reasonable prices.
The Pilkington KS glass sealed units that Graham expertlyfits as standard are of the highest quality and come with a ten-year guarantee. They are filled with argon gas and can includea warm edge bar if required and are manufactured and testedto BSI standard so you have the peace of mind that your newglass has been rigorously tested and is highly energy efficient.
And as we all know by now, its not just our carbon footprintthat increases with inefficient glazing products, but also ourenergy bills.
After a period of time, the seal between the two pieces ofglass in a double-glazed windowunit breaks downand causes a mistyeffect, explainsGraham. When
this happens, it means they nolonger have any thermalefficiency or sound proofing andheat loss can become a bigproblem.
While you may think that theonly solution is to fork out for anew frame as well as new glass,Graham is pleased to say that thisisnt necessary. What I do is fit thelatest energy efficient glass intoexisting frames of any size. Aslong as there is no damage tothose frames, there is no need toreplace them and this can save people a lot of money.
While frames have improved slightly over the years, theyhave mainly stayed the same so you can rest assured that youwont be losing heat through old frames. Huge improvementsin glazing technologies, however, are benefiting homeownersmore than ever.
So why wait until the glass is misty? With very competitiveprices and no VAT to pay, Sheffield Glazing can offer an
affordable option for new double-glazing that will instantly improve theenergy efficiency of your home withoutbreaking the bank.
As well as replacing the glass inwindows, Graham also carries outrepairs on any type of frame and anyaspect of glazing, including the glass inconservatory roofs and patio door units and he does it all to the higheststandards.
Give Graham at Sheffield Glazing acall for some honest advice or toarrange your free quotation and startlooking forward to a brighter view at agreat price.

PULSEEATING OUT
With food this goodyou dont need anexcuse to dine outat the Whitley HallHotel, writesStephanie Burns.
Its one of S35s most spectacular hidden gems. Nestled in thebeautiful countryside between Penistone Road andChapeltown Road, Whitley Hall Hotel has no doubt been thesetting for the special occasions of many a Pulse reader.
Indeed, on the night we visited a midweek evening as springwas just beginning to bloom we overheard a number ofcelebratory clinking of glasses and happily paused in a doorway atone point as a family gathered to have their photo taken on thegrand old staircase in the lobby.
The evening had begun in style with a G&T in the lounge; aroaring open fire crackling in the background and a windowoverlooking the pristinely manicured gardens adding to its charm. We took our time over the menu and quickly set our mouthswatering over the prospect of dishes such as chicken and pistachioterrine, marinated Moss Valley belly pork and pan fried sea bream fillet.
However, it was something much more homely that drew myattention to the specials menu a meat and potato pie. Now, youmay think that this particular dish seems out of place on such asophisticated menu, but this was no ordinary pie. Served silver-service style at the table, this was a triumph of wonderfully tender
beef, rich flavoursome gravyand flaky puff pastry and waseasily one of the best Ive ever eaten.
My partners charred sirloinof Hereford beef was just asgood. Accompanied byshallot chutney, confit cherrytomatoes and seriously goodchips, it was an excellentexample of another classic.
These hearty dishes had followed rather more delicate starters, both of which looked pretty as a picture. My creamed goatscheese was cut through with a ragout of sharply pickledvegetables, ensuring the overall experience wasnt too rich. Acrossthe table, my partner thoroughly enjoyed his lesson in adding atouch of sweetness to a savoury dish thanks to a butter-roastedpigeon breast that, alongside sour cherry and beetroot pure, came with a smooth chocolate ganache. It was a wonderfullyunusual addition to the plate.
For puds, the spiced sugar doughnuts immediately caught myeye and were every bit as scrumptious as Id hoped, and theindulgent iced biscuit nougat and areo foam (a kind of chocolateand cream mousse) that accompanied them were divine. It was a
similar story for my companions brandy snap basket filled withhomemade ice cream and sorbet, it was a refreshing end to our evening.
Although we hadnt arrived at Whitley Hall Hotel to celebrate anoccasion, we left safe in the knowledge that wed experiencedsomething really rather special. And besides, when the food andsetting are this good, who needs an excuse to visit?

EDUCATIONKIP MCGRATH
You may have noticed that a wave of panic is beginningto spread through S35. To be precise, it is gripping thosehouseholds and families where there are children whowill be doing exams and tests.
There will, however, be households where the occupants arevery relaxed.
I remember one boy at school who didnt seem to care. Hehad never done anything remarkable in class work and didntseem to study particularly hard. When it came to the mainevent, he was quite unruffled and went on to get grade A inevery subject.
Others are very bright and normally score top marks ineverything they do but, come exam time, they struggle withthe pressure. Coping with pressure is necessary in todaysworld. Indeed, some tension is useful if there is to be goodperformance. The problem comes when there is too much, or itisnt managed well enough.
Here are some thoughts for families dealing with test andexam pressure at this time of year.
As Arthur Ashe, former world number one tennis player, said:One important key to success is self-confidence. An importantkey to self-confidence is preparation. This means doingrevision thoroughly.
Dont be fooled by the idea that spending hours swottingwill necessarily be good. It is much better to do 20 minutes
concentrated effortthen relax as the brainwill be processingeven when notrevising.
Dont forget to havedays with no schoolwork. We have a viewthat more is better but look at Finland. They have one of thebest performing education systems in the world yet they doless school work than we do.
When taking downtime, consider its quality. Are video gamesthe best way to relax the body and brain?
Finally, try to avoid making the whole exam thing a make-or-break experience. Yes, it is true that you need maths andEnglish GCSEs for just about everything these days, but thereare other opportunities if the grade is missed first time around.
I wish every child and their families the very best as thisimportant time of year approaches.
David Kaye is the Centre Director for Kip McGrath EducationCentres Sheffield North in Ecclesfield and is a former headteacherwith 25 years experience in South and West Yorkshire.
Exams are looming, but keep calm anddont panic, writes David Kaye.

nurture all your plants, just as theyre starting to grow. Feed beds and borders with any good general
fertiliser such as blood, fish and bone or anotherorganic alternative. Sprinkle it on by hand allover the soil, applying it underneath shrubs andround the base of climbers, perennials and
clumps of bulbs. Trickle a line of fertiliser alongthe base of all your hedges theyll be feeling
fairly starved after this winter and spring is theperfect time to feed them.
Fruit trees, bushes and canes also benefit from a good start-of-the-season feed, so use the same general fertiliser for those too.But since they need extra potash to encourage flowering and

fruiting, also give them sulphate of potash (at half an ounceper square yard).
This same cocktail is a good late-spring feed for clematis, which is a greedy plant and also appreciates extra potash.
Carol Klein says sow your seedsOutdoors, self-sown seedlings are beginning to peep out inbeds and borders, but the greenhouse is heaving with life.
Providing it has been stored in a cool, dry place and out ofbright sunlight, most seed is raring to go. Any pot or recycledcontainer will do for your sowing as long as it has drainageholes (imperative) anda reasonable depth (atleast 5cm).
What are wesowing? Lots of veg.Fill containers liberallywith peat-free seedcompost and firmgently to produce alevel surface justbelow the rim of thepot or tray.
Sprinkle small seedson the surface of thecompost by pinchingwith thumb andforefinger or tappingfrom your palm; it doesn't matter how you do it as long as theseed is sown finely.
The biggest cause of death in seedlings is from damping off,a fungal disease that makes them collapse. And the mainreason for damping off is sowing too thickly.
Cover seed with a layer of sharp grit, emulating what wouldhappen in nature. The grit helps stop the seed being washedaway yet retains moisture underneath and provides drainagearound the shoots.
If seedlings are there for any length of time, grit also detersweeds and liverwort from taking hold.
Monty Don says selectseasonal flowersAfter the first delicate bulbs of early spring and the pastel flushof yellow that follows with daffodils, tulips bring colour like acarnival to the garden.
The earliest will start flowering at the beginning of April, butthe end of the month and well into May is their prime season.
Before choosing your bulbs, it is worthremembering where tulips come from so
that the ground can be properlyprepared. They mainly originate from anarea that now occupies Turkey, Iraq, Iranand Armenia, where they grow on shale
slopes. This means they have very sharpdrainage so they never sit in the wet. Give them as much sun as you have and
most importantly do whatever you can toimprove the drainage.
If you have very wet, cold soil, it is a good idea to grow newbulbs in containers. The bulbs can then be lifted in due course and the best surviving bulbs from the containers planted intothe borders.
Not all tulips flower at the same time. It is much easier toplant tulips of the same type and group such as lily-flowered,triumph or parrot tulips together.
THE HOME HEROES Aggie Mackenzie says spring cleanStart with a small room soyou won't feel daunted.Make a list of what youhave, and what you nolonger need. Divide everythinginto categories, such as paper, gadgets, clothes, books. Take outeverything that needs to be cleaned and I mean everything, including thecurtains.
If you haven't used something for morethan a year, out it goes. If it holds very dearmemories, start a memory box.
Divide everything into: things that areuseless and have to be thrown away; itemsthat can be recycled; and things you cangive to friends. Then start assembling yourpiles. Once you've collected everything, actimmediately go to the tip, the charityshop or the recycling depot.
Bring in a basin of hot, soapy water.Clean those ledges. Clean windows untilthey shine. Dust the lamp. Get the vacuumattachment and clean the dark corners.
This takes time don't expect to do morethan two rooms a day.
Laurence Llewelyn-Bowensays substance before styleMany people place maintenance way down their list ofproperty essentials, preferring to spend money on moreimmediately glamorous items, but there's no point in buying a
costly, luxurious carpet or rug for yourbedroom, if two months later a leak
caused by faulty roof tiles means youhave to replace it.
There is nothing stylish aboutdamp. Preventive care is the best formof maintenance - it's the least intrusive
and, in the end, it's the least expensive.Get the basics right - and then you can
have fun!The great irony is that if most of us spent a little time and
money on some simple maintenance, in the long run we'dprobably have more to spend on the, admittedly, excitingcreative and imaginative aspects of home ownership.
Kelly Hoppen says lighten upAccessories and dcor, or home jewellery as I like to call it,provide those little accents that add beauty and personality toa home. Build a collection of staple pieces, such as coral andvases, which can conveniently be changed with the seasons.
Choose your shades carefully the colours and themes usedin your home can have a great impact. I am notorious for mylove of taupe I use it so much because its a gorgeous shadethat always provides a chic, timeless look.
Lighting is crucial and has such a big impact on a room. Foran affordable and unique touch, place uplighters by the edgesof your curtains, which will light up the ceiling.

PULSETRAVEL
Lizzie Murphyexperiences the rich variety of life in the tropical paradise ofCosta Rica.
Flying through the forest canopy nearly1500m above the ground, this felt like achallenge that would even make BearGrylls think twice. Well, almost. The fact that Ihad been kitted out with a harness and ahelmet and was accompanied by a team ofsafety-conscious guides may detract slightlyfrom the True Survivor element of Costa RicasEcoglide zip-wire experience. In fact, it was theperfect introduction for two adrenalinerookies such as myself and my travelingcompanion, my dear old dad.
Costa Rica is a land rich in experiences. Aparadise for thrill-seekers and nature-loversalike, the country attracts over 2.5milliontourists annually. Almost half of these visitorsare seeking to explore the expansive naturalbeauty of the country, which is estimated tocontain five per cent of the worldsbiodiversity.
As both a biologist and lover of all thingsAttenborough, I leapt at the opportunity todiscover this treasure trove of tropical life. I wascertainly not disappointed by the gems weuncovered.
Some of Costa Ricas richest life is found onland, in the rainforests of the northernhighlands. A varied selection of mammals livehere, from the heavily armoured armadillo tothe wide-eyed kinkajou.
The star of the show is without a doubtthe sloth, the worlds slowest mammal.Sleeping for between 15 and 20 hours aday, this animal moves so slowly its furprovides the perfect habitat for moths, beetles and cockroaches. We were luckyenough to spot one of these weird yetwonderful creatures during a night walkin the cloud forest of Monteverde.Hanging from a thin, trailing vine a merethree feet above us, it swung itselfdelicately upwards in search of some evening grub.
It was not just this mysteriousmammal that our tour guide, Elbert, waskeen for us to witness. Once we werefully equipped, torches in hand, he led

us through the forest in search of a variety of nocturnal critters. Elbert had his walkie-talkie at the ready, communicating with other nearby guides to ensure we saw thefinest of what the forest had to offer under the veil of darkness.
Elbert pointed through trees and branches to show us a side-striped palm viper, poised and ready for ambush. He shone his light into a small burrow between thick, knotted tree roots to show us a female orange-kneed tarantula. Leaves came alive, suddenly revealing themselves to be expertly camouflaged katydid crickets. He was soenthused to show us the forest at night our pace quickened until we were leaping overdead wood and hurling ourselves over fallenbranches in true Indiana Jones-style,desperate not to miss out.
Our explorations of Costa Ricas naturalwonders however, were not restricted to land.Never one to pass up the chance to divebeneath the waves, I spent one morningscuba diving off the north Pacific coast, around the Catalina Islands. On the boat rideto the islands a pod of dolphins joined us,breaking the waters surface with theirarching bodies. The diving itself uncoveredmoray eels with needle teeth, scorpion fishnestled into the sand and a shiny, silvertrumpetfish, proudly hovering above thesand.
The final dive of the morning was certainlyone to be remembered. While movingthrough a narrow channel between two rockswe came across three sharks drifting lazily

along the seabed. Smaller, and thankfully lessvicious, than Hollywoods infamous Jaws, thewhite-tipped reef sharks paid us divers littleattention. These were silent, gracefulcreatures, their sleek bodies moving in gentlecurls with the current. Our breathingremained steady and slow, respectful of thefact that we were merely visitors to theiraquatic kingdom. Eventually our air suppliesindicated it was time for us to leave so weheaded back to the surface, all limbs intact.
A trip to Costa Rica wouldnt be completewithout a visit to one of its prime surflocations and the choice is vast. The northernPacific coastline is a haven to backpackersand beach bums, all in search of the perfectwave. We chose to spend the final few daysof our Central American adventure atTamarindo Bay, one of the most famous surfresorts in the country. Being a completenovice to the sport, I spent an intense twohours inhaling seawater as I threw myself offthe board in a frenzy of flailing limbs. Such anexhausting effort finally paid off and I finallymanaged to ride a wave, albeit on an over-sized foam beginners board.
Costa Rica is so much more than a holidaydestination; its a country of adrenaline andadventure. Its the perfect place for thosewho are looking for something with a bitmore bite than just sun, sea and sandperhaps with the help of a shark or two.
