CLEAN CYLINDER SURFACES IMPROVE DRYING EFFICIENCY AND QUALITY

Dirty cylinder surfaces create many problems in PM drying section. Energy waste, paper or board quality problems and production time waste mean significant profit loss for the paper mill.

With an efficient cylinder surface cleaning it is easy to eliminate these problems. Reduction of energy costs, improved quality and additional production efficiency mean increasing profit for the paper producer.

Dirty cylinder surface creates uneven moisture profile and moisture profile peaks. These peaks are usually eliminated with the steam box, moisturizer and with over-drying. As a result, easily 7% additional energy costs are created. Dirty cylinder surfaces also prevent effective heat transfer from the cylinder to the paper web. This means decreased drying efficiency and additional steam consumption for drying, also resulting in increased energy costs.

DIRTY CYLINDER SURFACES CAUSE PAPER QUALITY PROBLEMS AND ADDITIONAL NEED FOR MANUAL CLEANING Dirty cylinder surfaces also worsen the paper or board quality. Dirt and contamination like fibers, fillers, stickies and chemicals accumulate on the cylinder surface and sticks into the paper web. This creates paper defects, other quality problems and sheet breaks. Dirty cylinders must be cleaned manually very often. Cleaning takes time, meaning production time waste and additional cleaning costs.

DIRTY CYLINDER SURFACE MEANS ENERGY WASTE ENERGY COSTS EASILY

CLEAN CYLINDER SURFACE IMPROVES DRYING EFFICIENCY AND QUALITY Clean cylinder surface has a straight impact on drying efficiency. Elimination of the insulating dirt layer improves the heat transfer into the web. It clearly helps to maintain an even moisture profile, which decreases energy costs as there is no need to correct the profile with the steam box or over-drying. Clean cylinder surfaces also improve the paper or board quality. In addition, it enables the mill to achieve better CD tensile strength in earlier stage of the drying section. The efficient cylinder cleaning also means improved drying section runnability and higher permeability of dryer fabrics, because the dirt particles are removed before spreading to the process.

REFERENCES “ We have 40 references in Europe in paper and board machines. We have delivered EV ReDoc system to many different kinds of machines and grades, for example special baking paper, silicone coated and filter paper.” Some examples of our deliveries: Stora Enso: coated fine paper, printing paper and liquid packaging, Finland M-Real: LWC base paper, folding box board, coated fine paper, Finland Ahlstrom: label paper, Finland and filter paper, UK

Metsä Tissue has 6 EV ReDoc units in PM 7 and 4 units in PM 5. The grade is special baking paper. Production has increased 24 000 to 30 000 tons/year and problems with contaminated cylinders have disappeared in MetsäTissue Mänttä. The mill has received great feedback from end-customers about better paper quality.

Ahlström Chirnside PM 22, UK, has 2 EV ReDoc units. The grade is filter paper. The mill had a problem with build up on the dryer cylinder after the acid section that could not effectively be cleaned with normal doctors only. According to the mill, the situation was certainly improved by the EV ReDoc system.

EV ReDoc® is a continuous reconditioning system for paper machine cylinder and roll surfaces. EV ReDoc -system eliminates dirt like stickies, fibres and coating colour from cylinder surfaces by using steel brushes. Even old and worn out cylinders can be cleaned effectively with the help of EV ReDoc. Conventional doctoring system is not able to keep cylinders clean. EV ReDoc -system can be used with an existing doctoring system.

Stora Enso will, subject to deci-sions by the respective Ger-man corporate bodies, per-

manently shut down the 195 000 tonnes per year newsprint machine at Maxau Mill in Germany by the end of November 2010. Newsprint production at Maxau will end due to weak European market outlook and high production costs. Sales prices have fallen significantly while recovered paper and wood costs have risen strongly. As a result, there is no realistic prospect of newsprint production at Maxau Mill becoming profitable again in the foreseeable future.

“The European newsprint market is structurally heavily oversupplied and there has been no substantial recovery in demand since con-sumption collapsed in early 2009. The outlook for demand is negative too. In addition, the availability of wood and recycled fibre in Germa-ny has been limited, so costs have been rising fast recently,” says Juha Vanhainen, EVP, Publication Paper Business Area.

The permanent shutdown of the newsprint machine at Maxau Mill will reduce European newsprint capacity by approximately 1.5%.

The shutdown will affect about 180 of the 617 people employed at Stora Enso’s Maxau Mill. Stora Enso is working on a social plan for the employees affected by the restructuring measures. The two uncoated magazine paper ma-chines with total annual capacity 530 000 tonnes at Maxau Mill will remain in operation. -End-

Innventia, a research institute, continues to revolutionise the paper business. Its research

work has now produced a new method that will result in a strong-er paper with lower production costs and reduced raw materials consumption. This dream scenario has now become a reality for many companies in the paper business.“For a paper mill that produces 450,000 tonnes of the new paper per year, this technology means an annual savings of approximately 120 million Swedish kronor,” says Daniel Söderberg, Research Man-ager and initiator at Innventia and the person behind the previous work.

The Aq-Vane technique is derived from the aircraft industry. It deals with the separation of fibre layers before they are joined together to form the paper. “This technique uses a thin layer of water to sta-bilise the fibre layers and conse-quently form an even flow while they are being joined together. This prevents the layers from blending with each other. This means that it is now possible to keep the layers separate as well as to control the precise properties that are wanted in a paper.”

A lighter IKEA catalogueFor a product such as the IKEA catalogue, approx. 200 million cop-ies of which are distributed each year, this means enormous savings. For the papermaking industry as a whole, this implies a savings in bil-lions of kronor.

Daniel explains, “We’ve tailor-made a new kind of uncoated pa-per, which is the same type as that

used in the IKEA catalogues. By putting finer fibres in the surface and coarse fibres in the middle of the paper we’re able to save up to 10% in costs on fibre raw materials and energy.”

European collaborative project

As of June 2010, Innventia is lead-ing BoostEff, an EU project with a total budget of 11 million Euro, to demonstrate the industrial and economical potential of the method. Using Aq-vane, with its possibilities for advanced dosage, Innventia, in collaboration with Stora Enso, a paper producer, is developing the kind of paper that is used in catalogues and magazines.“This project also signifies a com-pletely new way of working,” states Daniel. “The starting point in the project is three existing industrial production units, one of which belongs to Stora Enso. Using these, the possibilities of the new technique, together with existing techniques, are being adapted to demonstrate the potential product and the production process in-volved. The results from the project are going to be used as a basis for three investment projects involving technical specifications and eco-nomical results.

The Aq-vane technique has the po-tential to generate increased profits based on the form of savings in the fibre raw materials and energy. “Within BoostEff several compa-nies and institutes from around Europe are collaborating with us at Innventia,” explains Daniel. “When the project comes to an end in 2013, the technology will also be available to the rest of the indus-try giving the opportunity of an increased profitability and, most of all, an improved paper.”

Mondi launches its new digital printing paper brand DNS®:

Digital Needs Specialists

Mondi launches its new digital printing paper brand DNS®: Digital

Needs Specialists

Mondi expands its digital print-ing portfolio to include DNS®, the new paper brand that offers profes-sional printers a single solution for multiple applications on all digital printing presses. DNS® premium kicks-off the brand-launch as the first paper on the market from the DNS® range.

Mondi launches DNS®as its new brand of uncoated fine papers. “DNS® was devel-oped with the requirements of digital specialists in mind. We recognized that profes-sional printers needed a single paper they could rely on in an industry that demands a lot of versatility,” explains Johannes Klumpp, Marketing and Sales Director for Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper.

DNS® premium is the first product to stem from the DNS®brand. It is produced for use on digital production machines anddry toner machines such as iGen and Nexpress, as well as office laser printers, inkjet printers and copiers, making it a multifaceted product for use in both profession-al press rooms and offices.

“The launch of DNS® is an excit-ing milestone in the growth of our digital printing paper portfolio,” says Klumpp. “DNS® premium is also pre-print guaranteed and

suitable for off-set printing, which is an attractive feature for profes-sional printers, as having one paper on stock for every printing press is now a realistic option.”

DNS®premium has a high white-ness factor that shows excellent contrast for text and graphic printouts. Due to ColorLok® Technology, office inkjet printers with pigmented ink can also create impressive full colour brochures,

presentations or other printed materials that demand high-impact colour saturation.

DNS® premium can be recognized by its purple wrapper with the digital motif of a hand operat-ing a touch screen. “We will be adding more papers to the DNS® brand. Our customers have more to look forward to in the upcoming months,” says Klumpp.

Mondi has spearheaded a number

of initiatives in response to the growing digital printing market. During the past year, Mondi intro-duced its ongoing series of Digital Specialist Forums, where profes-sional printers and key customers familiar with professional and of-fice printing environments convene to discuss current and upcoming trends in digital printing.

DNS®premium and the digital printing paper portfolio are devel-

oped and produced by Mondi Neusiedler, a mill renowned for its innovations, high quality paper production and environmental standards. DNS®premium is certified with the FSC® (Forest Stew-ardship Council) mark and the EU-Flower. It also belongs to Mondi’s Green Range. All Green Range papers are either FSC®-certified, bleached with-out chlorine (TCF) or 100% recycled.

The Green Range reflects Mondi’s commitment to responsible manufactur-

ing practices, as all products are produced according to the leading environmental and social guide-lines. Keeping a steady focus on sustainability, Mondi continually strives for the careful selection and responsible use of raw materials and for significant reductions in emissions to air, water and land. The leading environmental posi-tion was recently recognized by WWF – Mondi ranks as number one in the global paper company environmental index.

MÜTEK PCD-04... KNOWS WHAT’S IN SOLUTION

The Mütek PCD-04 Particle Charge Detector measures colloidally dissolved substances in a process sample. It is a standard tool for detecting anionic trash levels as well as for characterizing chemical additives. Equipped with an optional pH probe, the pH value of samples can be monitored and the isoelectric point be determined.

To measure charge the sample material has to be titrated in the PCD measuring cell. Highest accuracy and reproducibility is achieved by combining the Mütek PCD-04 with the automatic titrator Mütek PCD-T3. This set-up is widely used around the world in:

* R&D labs of chemical suppliers and paper mills * Universities, institutes, schools * Applications outside the paper industry

making the Mütek PCD the standard for charge measurements.

Measuring Principle

The aqueous sample is placed in the measuring cell and the pH probe is inserted. Once the PCD is turned on, the piston of the cell oscillates and causes a high flow rate. Any charged material adsorbed to the cell wall will be separated from its counter-ions by the flow to create a streaming current. Two electrodes in the cell pick up this current and display it on the unit next to the measured pH value. A poly-electrolyte of opposite charge is added until reaching the charge zero point. For isoelectric point detections, an acid or base is used to neutralize the charge.

The Mütek PCD-04 should always be combined with the automatic titrator Mütek PCD-T3.

Benefits

* Detect anionic trash sources * Characterize charge properties of additives * Determine isoelectric points * Understand charge reactions in the processThe Mütek PCD-04 is also available

with an integrated titration module – the so called Mütek PCD-04

what is the difference between cellulose and cellulose?

viscose fibre specialities for a new approach to paper

Page 21: Pulp-paperworld Magazine

Controlling the quality of paper by using the right grade of pulp and

auxiliary materials as well as selecting the appropriate process settings

is a standard procedure in the paper making process. When the end

product requires specific properties this may not be enough:

Our viscose specialities offer you a wide range of possibilities to extend

the spectrum of your paper’s characteristics or even add new function-

alities to your product.

fine-tuning of paper characteristics

• Our viscose specialities help increase the tear

resistance of the paper without loss of tear

strength.

• Tests have shown that the paper’s porosity

can be precisely controlled by incorporating

viscose fibres – a feature already used by

manufacturers of tea bags, cigarette papers

as well as many kinds of filters.

• Papers incorporating viscose fibres can

exhibit better dewatering properties.

• When modified with additives, viscose

fibres can improve the paper’s retention

characteristics.

• Our viscose specialities are produced from

100% cellulose and can therefore easily be

incorporated into a paper matrix having the

same surface chemistry as pulp fibres.

• Completely natural in origin, viscose fibres

are fully biodegradable and therefore an

environmentally sound alternative to other

additives.

• Viscose fibres offer uniform and constant

levels of quality from batch to batch.

fibre. The hollow cross section combined

with a chemical modifier delivers an

intrinsic fibre absorbency level four times

higher than standard viscose fibres.

Page 22: Pulp-paperworld Magazine

• fibre cross section

The shape of the fibre cross section is the key to fibre

properties. In addition to our well-known fibres with round,

flat and trilobal cross sections, we have developed fibres

with innovative cross sections which are particularly suitable

for incorporation into paper.

• fibre dimensions

Unlike natural cellulosic fibres, viscose fibres can be produced

in a constant and defined fibre length and fibre diameter as

required by the final use of the fibre. Kelheim Fibres produces

short cut viscose fibres in a range from 0,5 to 28dtex in the

standard round cross section, corresponding to an equivalent

diameter of 7 to 48 micrometers. For short cut applications the

the fibre can be supplied in a range of cut lengths between

three and twelve millimetres.

• fibre functionality

In addition to the parameters of cross sec-

tion and dimension our R&D specialists have

developed a number of modifications which

give our fibres further special properties.

New functional fibres can be realised by

incorporating special additives – such as

pigments or micro-capsules – into the fibre

matrix; The structure of the viscose fibre is

modified by adapting spinning conditions and

chemical modification of the fibres can deliver

fibres with anionic or cationic properties.

Knowledge of our customer’s products and an understanding of our

customer’s business is crucial for our work. This allows us to offer

fi bres that are tailor-made to meet the specifi c requirements of our

customers. We operate pilot plants which allow us to produce – on a

small scale – different products using our speciality fi bre technologies.

For paper applications we run an inclined wire machine – so we are

able to test our fi bres under production conditions on site. For analysis

of the test material we work in close cooperation with professionals

from the Institute for Paper, Pulp and Fibre Technology (part of the

Graz University of Technology, www.ipz.tugraz.at) and from the de-

partment for Paper Technology (University of Applied Sciences Munich

New Infrared Moisture Sensor launched at

Zellcheming Expo

HPIR sensor gives papermakers tighter CD control, and faster start-ups and grade changes

ABB, the pioneer in Quality Control Systems,

officially introduced the new High-Performance Infrared (HPIR) moisture sensor for their QCS800xA Quality Control System (QCS) at the Zellcheming Expo in Wiesbaden, Germany, on June 29, 2010.

The new HPIR, a replacement for ABB’s popular HemiPlus moisture sensor, is designed to improve the performance of both new and existing ABB QCS systems. It is the latest advance in ABB’s 50-plus year history of providing innovation to the pulp and paper industry.

“HPIR helps mills achieve faster grade changes, quicker start-ups and tighter CD control,” says Declan Byrne, Head of Sales & Marketing, ABB Ltd. Quality Control Systems. “This gives papermakers a greater sense of confidence in the accuracy of their moisture measurement. They can shift

their moisture targets so they are closer to their quality limits, which helps them save on energy and fiber costs.”

High resolution HPIR sensors were developed to provide

papermakers with increased reliability and accuracy. The new ABB moisture sensors calculate measurements 5000 times per second, making them especially precise tools. Designed to significantly increase signal-to-noise ratio, HPIRs can measure moisture streaks as narrow as 4 mm.

HPIR is the only moisture sensor on the market with no continuously-moving parts

and they do not require liquid cooling. The sensors’ modular design allows mill personnel to easily replace modules on-site. As a result, mills can avoid factory repairs and eliminate having to stock complete spare sensors.

EV EasyOne optimizes the first single felted drying groups Does your web run easily at the beginning of your drying section, at the first single felted groups?

Do you have sheet flutter and paper defects? Does tail threading take too much time?

Especially in high-speed paper machines, the first single felted drying groups are very sensitive to run. Without support on web release between upper cylinder and vacuum roll the wet web tends to follow the upper cylinder, resulting in breaks and paper defects. EV EasyOne™ optimizes the web release between upper cylinder and vacuum roll. It eliminates runnability problems that are caused when the sensitive wet web tends to follow the upper cylinder surface. Traditionally, draw difference between press and drying section has been a tool to control runnability but this often causes problems in paper quality. With the EV EasyOne it is possible to improve the web release effectively with a special high vacuum area. This optimizes both drying section runnability and draws to improve paper quality.

EV EasyOne technology includes a special high vacuum area. This prevents web from following the upper cylinder and resulting in breaks and paper defects. EV EasyOne technology is typically combined with the EV EasyGo concept combining web stabiling and vacuum roll technologies.

EV EasyOne ensures:

Excellent runnability of the first single felted drying groups

Eliminates sheet flutter and paper defects

Additional PM speed

More tolerance to process fluctuations

Reduction of raw material costs

Stora Enso Anjala PM 2 has ordered EV EasyOne™ runnability components and services to improve runnability at the 1st and the 2nd drying sections.

RESPONSIBLE

TANK CLEANING

Page 31: Pulp-paperworld Magazine

As leaders in the global supply of equipment which uses water and chemicals to clean tanks across a wide variety of industries we know some of the pressures facing the manufacture of pulp and paper. The large volumes of water consumed and effluent discharged requires an optimal approach to cleaning. At Scanjet Systems we call this responsible tank cleaning. This means we don’t just supply you with equipment to clean your tanks to the highest standard and in the shortest time, instead we take care to find a technical solution that will use the lowest volume of water and chemicals, that will enable maximum recycling of cleaning waters and that will release the lowest volume and concentration of effluent. We know how important it is for your process to be efficient and environmentally responsible and we appreciate water is a scarce resource. In our team we carry microbiologists, engineers and utilities specialists from the process industries who have the most experience in providing answers to your tank cleaning challenges. With offices based in the US, Europe and Asia Pacific we have additionally developed sales partners with specific pulp and paper industry expertise. Scanjet Systems is the global supplier but with locally placed partners .

Clariant showcases expertise in coloration,

whiteness and functional chemicals at ChinaPaper 2010

Under the banner of “Creating Value in a world of paper”, global

specialty chemicals company Clariant will attend the China Paper exhibition in Shanghai from September 15 – 17 at the Intex at Shanghai, China. As an established leader in providing high quality solutions for the paper industry across the world, Clariant will showcase its expertise in the area of coloration, whiteness, surface & coating, as well as processing chemicals during the 3-day show.

Cartabond® series crosslinkers for improved quality in offset printing and converting The series provides crosslinkers for improved quality in offset printing and converting. During printing and converting operations such as sheeting, rolling and de-curling, free particles tend to form dust, causing pro-duction stoppages and reduced printing quality. Thisis especially true when the paper surface needs to be wetted out for printing or converting operations.

Cartabond crosslinkers offer improved wet surface strength by decreasing the water solubility and/or aqueous swelling of binders and fibers close to the paper surface. They create additional links between the binder polymer molecules, the cellulosic fibers and the filler or surface pigment particles. Cartabond crosslinkers are highly reactive. They quicklycrosslink as soon as water is evaporated from the paper surface in the drying section of the paper machine. Carta-bond TSI, Cartabond EPI, Cartabond MZI and Cartabond KZI are available depending on the specific paper type and printing application.

Cartafluor® CFI liquid – Oil & grease resistance for food packaging

Cartafluor CFI is a highly efficient

cationic fluoropolymer providing grease and oil-resistance for paper and board. Additionally a degree of water resistance is also achieved via the sizing effect. The product func-tions by absorbing onto individual fibers, imparting a low surface en-ergy to the substrate and is designed for the treatment of sized and un-sized paper. Due to its performance and ecological properties it provides considerable benefits in the high-end industries such as food packaging.

Main characteristics and advantages of Cartafluor CFI liquid:

• Cationic, high molecular weight fluoropolymer• Providing grease, oil and water resistance to paper and board• Versatile product: application in wet-end or size press• Food contact approval from FDA and BfR

Cartasol® M range – coloration for packaging & newsprint

Another group of products to be featured at China Paper 2010 is the Cartasol M range. They have been developed especially for the packag-ing and newsprint market and com-bine superior technical performance with an improved Health and Safety profile at a competitive cost.

Cartasol M products are ide-ally suited for the dyeing of papers based on mechanical, recycled and unbleached pulp. They have been developed specifically for packag-ing applications as a technically advanced alternative for basic and anionic direct dyes. Compared to

basic dyes, Cartasol M products of-fer a faster attainment of shade and a higher stability with significantly higher light fastness. This product range is available in Yellow, Orange, Brown and Black to suit the varying needs in the packaging and board industry.

Tailored white paper solutionsWhen it comes to tinting white pa-pers one single solution may not al-ways be applicable. Recognizing this limitation, Clariant offers creative, easy-to-control tinting solutions, tailored for specific mills’ needs, making it versatile enough to pro-duce the desired white grades. This is achieved by offering a full line of specialty dyestuffs, pigment disper-sions and specialty optical brighten-ing agents for coated and uncoated free sheet as well as lignin containing grades.

“With strong expertise in tinting and the full range product portfolio, Clariant can provide the paper sector with tailor-made and easy-to-control white paper solutions. We can sup-port customers’ selection of the right combination of optical brightening agent and tinting dyes or pigments to meet their requirements regard-ing whiteness level and their process conditions,” says Andy Walti, Head of BU Paper Specialties, Region Asia Pacific.

“With this optimized combination resulting from strong partnerships with our customers, papermakers can reduce the consumption of OBA and related costs significantly,” con-tinues Walti.

Clariant offers customized recipes for an improved whiteness depend-ing on the customer’s requirements:

• Brightness• Whiteness• Shade of whiteness• Application (wet-end, size-press, coating)
