Our Paper Science and Engineering program is thriving, and I am privileged to say it is one of the best in the country. With a strong hands-on education, our students continue to advance our college’s mission of providing cutting-edge solutions for the sustainable use of natural resources.

The Paper Science and Engineering program continues to boast 100 percent job placement and some of the highest starting salaries on campus – in no small part because our students graduate with extensive experiential learning opportunities not found in the classroom. All of our students gain in-depth industry knowledge through internships, co-ops and study abroad, and enjoy both personal and professional growth through their experiences. Our Paper International Experience that is supported so well by many of you (page 9) is another example of great learning outside of the classroom.

We are pleased that with your help, so many of our students receive the financial support they need to pursue their passions in the paper industry. People like Dustin and Kristin Mountcastle (page 11) and Dr. Ron and Dale Terry (page 9) are great examples of the wonderful investment our alumni and friends make in our program and college. The Pulp and Paper Foundation supports one of the largest endowments per capita on campus. In addition to traditional financial support, gifts in kind, such as our Mill Simulation model donated by Andritz (page 12) are vital to training our students for their careers.

It brings me great delight to announce Dr. Sunkyu Park (page 17) as our E.J. “Woody” Rice Associate Professor. Dr. Park continues to build an outstanding reputation globally for himself, our college and our university with his research and teaching.

I am so proud of our Paper Science and Engineering students, alumni, faculty, staff, volunteers and supporters. Your continued support of this prestigious program keeps our college robust and relevant in a constantly changing world. We are strong today because of the life-long commitment so many of our dedicated alumni, donors and industry partners make to our program. Thank you for all you do.

On behalf of the executive committee and advisory board, greetings from the Pulp and Paper Foundation! We are honored to serve in a leadership capacity for this wonderful group of dedicated individuals, serving a powerful industry.

We have many accomplishments this past year to be proud of:

• Fundraising $233,000 from corporate entities, $73,000 from individuals and over $53,000 for the Paper International Experience (PIE) China trip.

• Encouraging gifts in kind resulting in a $750,000 gift of simulation software from Andritz for classroom and lab utilization.

• Supporting faculty and administration through our successful ABET accreditation process.

• Providing the support of our industry that places our graduates at the top of all engineering disciplines for starting salary and job placement.

• Engaging alumni through class contests, reunions and local events so that we all continue to be a part of our “paper science family” no matter the years or the distance.

We have a lot to be thankful for and it would not happen without the involvement of our board members, dedicated alumni and friends, industry partners and the college, department and program faculty and staff.

While we have continued to see record breaking attendance at foundation meetings and other events, as well as within the board and on committees, we encourage you to continue to advocate on our behalf. We always welcome new industry partners, committee members, board members and volunteers. Our excellent program and reputation were built on generations of volunteers and advocates before us. We encourage each one of you to help us pursue our goal of a world class, world renowned program.

Thank you for your dedication, support and time.

Currently, approximately 180 students are enrolled in the PSE curriculum or intend to change to the degree. The program will graduate the first of its larger cohorts this coming year, with nearly 50 expected to graduate in December 2017 and May 2018. Overall, the program continues to be healthy.

Last year, we experienced a dip in incoming freshman numbers, from a three-year average of 41, to 27 new freshmen because of changes in university admissions that were out of our control. However, our net students moving forward into the sophomore year is just 4 less than our three-year average. This demonstrates that we are able to recruit talented and energetic students from our on campus Engineering First Year students. The quality of the incoming freshman continues to increase, with GPA’s and test scores above average for the university and College of Engineering.

We continue to track the attrition rate of our incoming students, which has been about 25 percent for the past four years with the exception of 2015-16 where we experienced a 40 percent attrition rate. The nature of students admitted to the College of Engineering seems to be shifting. We are investigating ways we can change our recruiting and outreach strategies to respond to this change. Our program and industry resonate very well current freshman, and we consistently acquire more on-campus students than those that leave from the entering cohort. These “on campus transfer students” are wonderful additions to our program.

The fall of 2016 marked a major milestone with the successful visit of an accreditation reviewer (ABET). No weaknesses or concerns were cited for our program. We expect to receive full reaccreditation in August. This was our third accreditation review which occurs every six years.

In May, we took a record number 35 students to China for 11 days as part of our Paper International Experience (PIE). We visited manufacturing facilities, equipment suppliers and universities. The students were able to go for a reduced cost thanks to our industry, alumni and partners. Donations from companies and individuals totaled over $53,000.

We continue to look for ways to improve our facilities and capabilities. Dr. Lokendra Pal is working with various suppliers to upgrade the Wolfpack Baby pilot machine. A wet end rebuild is planned for late 2017. Dr. Ronalds Gonzalez is leading our new Tissue Pack Innovation Lab and the associated research consortium. With this effort, we are adding exciting new tissue making and analysis capabilities to our labs and pilot plant. Undergraduates are being exposed to more concepts concerning tissue manufacturing.

We are continually looking for ways to improve our students and graduates, using innovative curricular and extra-curricular measures. We have launched the Student Enhancement Initiative (SEI), which has the following new features:

• A “Leadership Certificate” which encourages students to take leadership modules on campus (e.g. teamwork concepts, communication, managing change, inspiring success, etc.) and complete a service project.

• A series of focus tracks to add value to students not pursuing the dual degree in PSE and Chemical Engineering. Students will be required to take courses in one of the following tracks, with an option to pursue a minor in some areas:

– Chemical Engineering Starter – Process Control (leading to a certificate) – Products & Converting – Business Management – Sustainable Materials & Technology – Chemistry

With a large number of undergraduate students enrolled and strong placements for summer internships, co-ops and full-time positions, the PSE program is looking forward to another great year for 2017-2018. We are thankful to the friends, supporters, alumni and companies who help us to stay successful.

Congratulations to our new upperclassmen recipients!

PIE 2017 – CHINA A Trip That Will Never Be ForgottenThe 2017 Paper International Experience (PIE) to China was an incredible experience! On behalf of a grateful group of students, faculty and staff, we would like to thank everyone who contributed to making this trip a reality. This experience would never be possible without the help of our amazing donors.

Our group would also like to recognize and thank Dr. Hou-Min Chang for his dedication, planning and network that made this trip not only possible, but tremendously memorable. Inside of ten days, the group experienced the high rises of Shanghai, the Forbidden City in Beijing and everything in between. In such a short time, we were completely immersed in Chinese culture and eagerly awaited each upcoming day with wonder and marvel. The group saw so many incredible historical sites and met so many amazing people, the trip easily became a life-changing experience abroad.

In addition to historical and cultural experiences, the group also visited several unique paper mills and two universities, Nanjiang Forestry University and Qilu University. Voith was the first industrial experience, where the group learned about industry employee training programs and production lines. They saw the construction of Yankee Dryer hoods and the assembly of tissue machines in the Voith warehouse. The second industrial experience took the group to Gold East Paper

Mill, where we they saw three coated free sheet machines in action. Later that day, the group also toured the Yongfeng Yu Paper Mill, where they saw a three-ply linerboard machine using old corrugated containerboard sourced partially from the United States.

The group also toured SunChem, a company founded by NC State alumnus Dr. Michael Sun. His facility makes specialty release paper for synthetic leather production. The most impressive feat was Dr. Sun’s explanation of how they pieced together this one-of-a-kind machine from several different manufacturers. They also went to an Asia Symbol manufacturing site, where the world’s largest continuous digester is housed. Unfortunately, the mill was on an outage, but they still learned a tremendous amount from their generous hosts. Our last mill, Tranlin, uses wheat straw to make their products. The group toured the mill, seeing everything from the wheat straw piles to the finished tissue product. Each facility provided us with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and learn about how mill processes abroad differ from processes at home.

This trip was filled with laughs and memories that will not soon fade. The group started as a bunch of inquisitive paper students and came back as a close-knit group of world travelers. This was the largest PIE group ever and the bonds that were forged was surely a highlight. The trip was much more than the group could have ever imagined.

This was truly an experience of a lifetime. I cannot thank our generous donors enough. Gaining international industry knowledge, experiencing Chinese culture, networking with alumni and executives, and forming a lifelong bond with your peers is a unique opportunity that I will cherish forever.

Dustin and Kristin Mountcastle don’t know where they would be without NC State University. The alumni couple credits the university with preparing them for burgeoning careers and providing them with lifelong friends and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. And last – but certainly not least – a mutual love of Wolfpack athletics brought Dustin and Kristin together. The two first met at a tailgate in 2003 when the NC State football team played in – and handily won – the Gator Bowl.

“NC State was really the launching pad for my entire life up to this point,” said Kristin, who earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the university in 2004. She and Dustin championed the 2015 “Recent Grad Challenge”, which encouraged young alumni to give back to the university.

Kristin and Dustin know firsthand just how critical private support can be for NC State students. Without scholarship support, the couple might never have met. Dustin, who grew up in Virginia, said a merit-based scholarship from the NC State Pulp and Paper Foundation piqued his interest in the university and ultimately made attending NC State, as an out-of-state student, a possibility.

“The tuition would’ve been too much for my family had it not been for a merit-based scholarship from the Pulp and Paper Foundation. It’s the whole reason that I was at NC State,” said Dustin, who earned bachelor’s degrees in pulp and paper science and technology and chemical engineering in 2003.

The Mountcastles, who now live in Charlotte, have remained strong supporters of their alma mater in the years since they graduated and started their careers.

The Dustin S. and Kristin D. Mountcastle Scholarship Endowment will support students from underrepresented groups whose major is in the College of Natural Resources Department of Forest Biomaterials. “That is an area where we can use diverse thought and diverse backgrounds to push the envelope,” Dustin said. Over time, he and Kristin plan to broaden their support to other areas at NC State.

Kristin said the couple considers their support of the university a long-term investment. “We have three daughters, and our hope is that one day they will end up there. We really see it as an investment in our family, our future and the future leaders of our country. We really couldn’t think of a better way to give back at this point in our lives.”

Although NC State has more than 30,000 students, both Dustin and Kristin said they were able to build strong relationships with faculty, which they say were instrumental in the development of their careers. “The faculty that were available to me always had an open-door policy,” Kristin said. “I developed great relationships with many of my professors.”

Coming to such a large university, Dustin initially thought he would miss the small-town environment in which he grew up. “I worried that I might get lost in the sea of so many people and so many students within the NC State family. But for me, the pulp and paper program – and the faculty within that program – had that small-town feel,” he said. “Professors cared about you and your future, and they made the content come alive so you enjoyed it.”

It is those types of experiences the Mountcastles hope to make available to even more students through scholarship support, which helps the university recruit top students and those who would not otherwise be able to afford a college education. Dustin encourages other alumni to give back through donations of any size or even volunteering.

ALUMNI GIVE BACK AND CHALLENGE OTHERS

My experience at NC State was completely life changing. I encourage alumni to think about the ability to make a difference in someone else’s life. How blessed are we to have that opportunity?

After attending a paper industry conference demonstration of the IDEAS v Plant Modular Pulp and Paper Operator Training Simulator from Andritz Automation, Dr. Richard Venditti, professor of the senior PSE Process Control Course, was so inspired that he spent more than a year trying to bring the simulation software to his process control lab. He was delighted when he received two memory sticks from Paresh Kenkare, an NC State Engineering alumnus and VP of Simulation, PAS Division at Andritz Automation, a donation valued at more than $750,000.

The 12-week lab rotates between several hands-on control experiments that demonstrate important concepts used to run a paper mill. The students learn the fundamentals of a single control loop in the process, while learning to diagnose and model the systems. With the addition of the simulator, students get an interactive lab experience with the chance to look at how to strategically run the entire paper mill, instead of just individual pieces.

“The Andritz simulator was by far my favorite part of the lab,” said Charles Joseph, a Paper Science and Chemical Engineering double major. “Through my courses and internships, I had a great understanding of the individual unit operations in a mill, but wanted to understand how they are all put together and managed. The lab simulation allowed me to play with the operator interface and attempt to start up the process from a dead stop. I gained an appreciation for how interconnected the system is and the balance that must be achieved between every aspect of the process.”

James Vislocky, also a double major, helped develop the lab exercises for the simulator. The two-week simulation lab focused on learning how to use the software and running the paper plant from a cold start, which is more difficult than altering the controls of an already running plant. Instead of asking students to follow a list of procedures, Vislocky gave them a series of tips and an outline, leaving the rest up to the students to figure out themselves in small groups.

“By doing the lab this way, students had to problem solve themselves and try and figure out how to get the plant started themselves in a real-world situation,” Vislocky said. “Groups were not expected to be able to solve the problem easily and many groups did not get the solution at all. But they still learned through the process. The program is almost exactly like what they will see in industry, so this was a good way for them to experience what may happen in the future. It also challenged their ability to work as a team, and determine the best way to approach the problem together.”

Joseph’s lab group was one that did not find the solution for the simulation lab. Even though his group was unable to run the mill successfully, Joseph still walked away from the lab with valuable experiences.

“The lab gave me an appreciation for the difficulty of the operator’s job and the amount of training and experience that goes into successfully controlling a process,” Joseph said. “Overall the Andritz simulation was a great learning experience that directly applies to the work I have done and the work I will be doing in the future.”

Vislocky also enjoyed the lab experience. “My favorite part of working with Dr. Venditti was how much freedom he gave me for the task,” Vislocky said. “He basically told me what he wanted, gave me a few pointers along the way, then allowed me to design the lab how I felt best. It allowed me to use my own ideas and design skills to bring the lab to life.” As a recent graduate, Vislocky will apply his hands-on leadership experiences to his new job at International Paper in Mansfield, LA.

“Students leave the lab with the confidence that they can apply process control tools in a larger system approach, something they will be doing in their jobs,” Venditti said. “They will be better prepared to start their jobs on day one, interacting with operators in the control system. This software allows us to produce job ready students.”

SIMULATING SUCCESS WITH ANDRITZ GIFT

I want to emphasize our appreciation of Andritz’s generosity. With this simulator, students can see all the operating systems, motors, pumps and controls. They can perform a cold start-up, evaluate and change operating parameters and observe the resulting process impacts. The students are using the same interface they will see in industry.

Dr. Sunkyu Park was recently named the E.J. “Woody” Rice Associate Professor in Paper Science and Engineering. This professorship was established in 2008 to recognize a tenured faculty member in the Department of Forest Biomaterials who is focused on research and teaching in biomass utilization for sustainable bioenergy and biomaterials. The professor should have a strong track record of graduate student education and an international reputation.

As an associate professor and University Faculty Scholar, Dr. Park has served the Department, College, University, and his professional societies in a variety of ways. He teaches several courses on bioenergy and biomaterials engineering, mentors students and serves on graduate committees.

“Dr. Park has built an outstanding reputation in the U.S. and globally,” according to his nomination. “Some of his publications are highly recognized, including those in the areas of cellulose crystallinity and biomass conversion into biofuel production. He carries out very productive research, is very successful in international activities, and is a service to our profession.”

Park’s research focuses on sustainable production of fuels, chemicals and materials from lignocellulosic biomass. He has more than 70 publications and 30 research grants, 18 as a lead PI, in biomass reactivity and biorefinery development.

“Chemical and other commodity industries are gradually shifting from relying on petroleum to lignocellulosic biomass

as feedstocks. To make biorefinery financially attractive, it is critically important to co-produce high-value chemicals and materials in addition to biofuel production. I do believe the bioeconomy will come and we can contribute by making products derived from biomass, not from petroleum,” commented Dr. Park. “Our research covers a broad spectrum of biorefinery development using renewable resources for a more sustainable future.

Rice spent 35 years with Hercules Incorporated and established their presence in Southeast Asia and Latin America. He made lifelong contributions to the pulp and paper industry and to NC State University. He retired as Group Vice President in 1992. Woody then served as Business Development Director and President of the Institute if Paper Science & Technology (IPST) until 2004. The endowment for the E.J. “Woody” Rice Professorship was funded through outright gifts by Rice, Hercules Incorporated, friends of Rice and matching funds from the North Carolina Forestry Foundation.

“During my 55 years or so in the paper industry I had the good fortune to be associated with some fine organizations,” Rice said. “I began supporting them directly and indirectly. Nearly 70 years ago, when working in potato fields, many bags of the best potatoes were put aside for seed for the next year’s planting. That memory of saving some of the best for seed has stayed with me. It is the same as putting some of the fruits of our labor back for seed through scholarships. I am honored to see the results of past harvests and have the joy of helping put some of the best of the best back for seed. Dr. Sunkyu Park, is truly the best of the best.”

DR. SUNKYU PARK NAMED E.J. “WOODY” RICE ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

I am very grateful to receive this recognition, especially knowing that I am surrounded by colleagues who are equally deserving. As an associate professor, this is great motivation to continue to work together for biorefinery and bioeconomy development. I did not make the journey here alone and I appreciate the support from our faculty, staff and dean. Finally, I would not be here without the encouragement from my students, postdocs and family – Thank you all!

GRADUATION TO VOCATIONSarah Sassorossi graduated in May 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Paper Science and Engineering. She recently started her career with Sonoco Products, a $5 billion packaging solutions company. As a Process Engineer, Sarah will be responsible for completing projects to continually improve the production, efficiency and safety of the Holyoke, MA operation.

What are you most excited about for your job? I am most excited to take everything I learned in classes and student organizations and put it to work. In the Paper Science senior design class, I learned so much about critically thinking through technical problems. I know this skill will be directly applicable to my work, where I will be required to think of creative solutions to problems that the facility faces.

How do you feel the College of Natural Resources prepared you for life after graduation? CNR helped prepare me through offering a variety of diverse student organizations and professional development opportunities. I have attended Business Etiquette Dinners, Financial Planning seminars, and CNR Ladies events, to name a few. I have practiced networking, public speaking and my presentation skills in a variety of venues. Also, the Paper Science and Engineering faculty took a heartfelt interest in my life. Together we solved “student life” problems, brainstormed career path ideas and became a family.

Did you complete any hands-on learning experiences? I completed four internships with Sonoco (2 in Hartsville, SC; 1 in Newport, TN; 1 in Holyoke, MA) and a semester long co-op with Domtar in Ashdown, AR. I worked both on teams and independently to complete process engineering projects.

What organizations were you a part of at NC State? My favorite activities were being a College of Natural Resources Ambassador, and an Engaging Leader Program participant, advisory board member and program coordinator. These college wide programs not only played a large part in my personal and professional development, but also expanded my network from my program to my college and beyond.

Do you have a memorable moment you’d like to share? One of my favorite memories was during our 2014 Shack-A-Thon. This campus-wide fundraiser benefits Habitat for Humanity of Wake County and student groups build small shacks on the Brickyard to be continually inhabited for one week. I was honored to serve as the fundraising coordinator for this event. As a part of the leadership team, I was able to watch this project come together with efforts from all of our departments and students. We built undoubtedly the best shack on the brickyard that year and won the competition by raising $12,000 (150 percent more than our previous best). I was so proud of every volunteer and donor that helped us build an awesome shack and raise money to build homes for people in need.

Any advice for students thinking about your major? Paper Science and Engineering has a diverse group of students, with a lot of different strengths and interests that all help them be successful. Our commonalities include solving problems and puzzles, working hard and taking pride in learning and contributing to our labs and projects. If that sounds like you, you’ll have a great time in the major that has become my family.

The College of Natural Resources has truly become my family during my time here. I’ve become close with many people: from my advisors, to students in other majors, to my Department Head. Even Dean Watzin greets me by name when I see her and that is an experience I think is much harder to get in other colleges. I am going to miss walking the halls of Biltmore with all of my heart, but I know that the College of Natural Resources will welcome me back whenever I want to visit.

College of Natural Resources “Family” Member RecognizedRon Terry was recognized as the 2016 College of Natural Resources Distinguished Alumnus by the NC State Alumni Association. The “Evening of the Stars” event recognizes alumni and friends of NC State who have given back to their professions, their communities and their alma mater. The recipients of the College Distinguished Alumni Awards, the Wolfpack Club’s Ronnie Shavlik Award and the Alumni Association Awards are chosen by each of NC State’s colleges, the Wolfpack Club and the Alumni Association for special recognition during Homecoming’s Red and White Week.

After earning two Bachelor of Science degrees from NC State, Pulp and Paper Science in 1976 and Chemical Engineering in 1977, Dr. Terry worked in the paper industry for a few years before deciding to study medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. Specializing in radiation oncology, he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

Dr. Terry performed his residency at Wake Forest University and practiced with two different oncology groups in Asheville, NC and Greenville, SC before starting his own private practice in

Ron has made a significant impact on our college, not only is he a role model for our students, but his vision is providing an opportunity for the young people to get out of the classroom and have experiences that will shape them for years to come – to not just think, but to do. We are so lucky to have him as a part of our College of Natural Resources family.

– Dean Mary C. Watzin

Athens, GA. In 2005, his practice merged with University Cancer and Blood Center to begin a multi-specialty oncology practice.

Staying Actively InvolvedDr. Terry is a member of the medical staff at Athens Regional Medical Center and St. Mary’s Healthcare System, and a clinical assistant professor in the departments of medicine and radiation oncology at the University of Georgia’s Medical College. In addition to being a lifetime member of the Alumni Association and long-time Wolfpack Club member, Dr. Terry serves on the board of directors of the NC State Natural Resources Foundation.

Not Just Thinking, but DoingIn 2015, Dr. Terry and his wife, Dale, established of the College of Natural Resources Student Enrichment and Assistance Fund to support students who may not otherwise be able to pursue enrichment experiences such as study abroad, research initiatives, career related conferences and unpaid internships. Both Ron and Dale are wonderful examples of devoting their time, energy and resources to help our students in a unique and life changing way.
