Despite disruptions created by the COVID-19 global pandemic, the Paper Science and Engineering program at NC State enjoyed another strong year. Our faculty, staff and students faced unprecedented challenges when the university transitioned all academic courses online for the safety of our community. As a result, students moved off campus, several lost internships, and we all lost the in-person camaraderie we so value. But as you will read, our program and people continued to thrive.

Our Paper Science and Engineering program, and the College of Natural Resources as a whole, demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability in serving our students and stakeholders during the pandemic. Our faculty and students rose to the occasion and maximized their virtual experiences. Faculty got creative to ensure that students gained hands-on skills. The Department of Forest Biomaterials developed a series of alternative, stay-at-home summer projects to increase opportunities for undergraduate research and give students the knowledge they need to be industry-ready.

Despite the challenges faced by academia and industry alike, the many local and international relationships our program has helped us be prepared to weather the unexpected. The mentorship, interview skills, resume

building, hands-on experiences and extensive professional network our students have access to would not be possible without our alumni, friends and industry partners. In fact, many of our students would not be at NC State at all without the scholarship support provided by our generous donors. Knowing they could count on scholarship support lessened the burden of the unexpected financial losses many students faced when internships were suspended.

Thank you for all that you contribute to our Paper Science and Engineering program. Because of the support you provide through gifts of time, knowledge, guidance and dollars, we are able to keep our program thriving, meet the needs of our students, generate a growing workforce, and advance our industry.

REPORT FROM THE ADVISORY BOARD

5

Greetings on behalf of the executive team and Advisory Board. We are honored to serve in a leadership capacity for this wonderful group of dedicated individuals, serving a powerful industry.

The 2019-20 academic year was one we will all likely never forget. As a board and program, we had ambitious plans and goals. While this year did not turn out as any of us would have expected, we are proud to say that our group stayed connected, achieved many of our objectives and succeeded at some innovative and creative new efforts.

While we did have to cancel our spring meeting, celebration banquet and golf tournament, we were still able to find ways to communicate, continue our work and most importantly support our students, alumni and industry through these unprecedented times.

As you will see throughout this report, our board and volunteers have partnered with our program to continue ongoing efforts and support new ones, such as:

• On-boarding our new Dean, Dr. Myron F. Floyd• Upgrading lab, pilot plant and office spaces• Revising our operating guidelines• Conducting corporate calls to explore collaboration opportunities• Gifts-in-kind from International Paper and Event Capture Systems, Inc• Supporting our seniors through virtual celebration events• Engaging many students with on-site and remote summer internship opportunities• Completing the recruitment, yield and retention of our freshman class • Planning for activities and events amidst the changes for the 2020-21 year

The success of the Advisory Board is highly dependent on the involvement of our directors, board members, dedicated alumni and friends, industry partners and our faculty and staff. Thank you for your tremendous efforts despite the additional demands of these unprecedented times. We encourage you to continue advocating on our behalf and helping to recruit new industry partners, committee members, board members and volunteers. Our program and reputation were built on generations of volunteers and advocates before us, whose leadership and vision have guided our goal of a world class, world renowned program.

We welcome the large, diverse and unique freshman class, along with all of our new upperclassmen to this program and this academic year. To all of our board members, industry partners, faculty, staff, alumni and students, thank you for your dedication, time and support.

IMPACT OF GIVING

Gifts in KindInternational Paper employees and PSE alumni Dale Stillwell (‘81 PPT) and Clark Hight (‘86 PPT and Chem Eng) worked to secure a $175,000 software donation for our program. The “Instrument and Electrical Precision Maintenance Controls Essentials Training Simulator” has multiple capabilities that together create a comprehensive ability to mimic many common processes in the Paper Industry, including the dynamic models of systems, such as control loops, sensors, pumps, and control valves. This gift provides students with the platform of a paper mill so that they become more familiar with process control while improving their problem-solving skills.

Event Capture Systems (ECS) donated a process monitoring and web inspection system for the Wolfpack Baby paper machine. This $50,000 gift made possible by alumnus and ECS President, Brian Mock (‘94 BS Civil Eng; ‘97 MS Textile Eng) enhances the capability of our paper machine, allowing our students to work with equipment and solve problems that they will encounter in industry.

Gifts of Service and TimeABB’s North American Pulp and Paper Tour mobile exhibit stopped at NC State in September of 2019, making its first campus appearance. A dedicated team of eight ABB employees staffed the truck for two days, with a constant flow of touring students, board members, faculty and staff every twenty minutes. Some features of the mobile exhibit include ABB’s Ability™ Collaborative Operations Center; DCS solutions; measurement, analytics and instrumentation; pulp and process measurements; L&W Autoline; CD control actuators; Quality Management (NP1200 scanner) System and a web imaging and monitoring systems. One of ABB’s goals with this “trade show on wheels” is to allow mill teams

and personnel the opportunity to see and learn about the latest digital technologies and industry solutions to improve the mill’s bottom line. This opportunity is even better because mill personnel don’t need to travel. Alumnus and board director Marty Wakefield (‘79, Chem Eng) was instrumental in securing the truck and resources. He was also able to staff the truck along with alumnus Ed “Nip” Melton (‘77 PPT) and the other ABB employees.

Honoring an AlumnusUpon the passing of esteemed alumnus and avid volunteer and supporter, Jeff Reese (‘85 PPT and Chem Eng), fellow International Paper co-workers and others pledged to create the Jeff Reese IMPACT Award. This endowment received $62,500 in pledges in less than 48 hours. We have 5 years to grow this endowment to $50,000, and in 9 short months we have already reached $42,430. This award will provide scholarships to students studying paper science and engineering, with a preference to students in any instrumental ensemble, who are members of TAPPI, or who serve as ambassadors/mentors in our program.

Lecture in Forest BiomaterialsDr. Richard Thomas alumnus (‘55 MS Wood Tech), former professor and department head in the College of Natural Resources, has generously donated $100,000 to establish an annual lecture in forest biomaterials. The Dr. Richard J. and Margaret M. Thomas Endowed Lecture in Natural Resources is expected to begin in 2021. Each lecture will highlight notable research from across the country or world. “This institution has always been great to me, and this donation is my way of giving back,” Dr. Thomas said, as he reflected on his 37 years of service at the university and college.

We are grateful for all the forms of support that enable us to provide a premier education to our students and world class talent to our industry. Some recent examples are highlighted below.

“As a student, it is imperative that we learn about power, controls and automation solutions. We are grateful to ABB for their support and spending so much of their time, energy and resources to bring

this opportunity to NC State. In addition to being a very educational experience, it was motivating and

exciting to see trends and future applications for our industry.”

Promoting ‘Smart’ Technologies in Paper ManufacturingNC State and the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII) have launched the Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center (SMIC) to provide new opportunities for the paper industry and academia to facilitate their digital transformation, Industrial Internet of Things, and analytical innovation initiatives.

The center, which includes the pilot paper plant in the Department of Forest Biomaterials at the College of Natural Resources, will focus on the education and manufacturing innovation and research for the forest product industry, according to Dr. Lokendra Pal, an associate professor in the department, whose multidisciplinary research team is focused on developing sustainable bioproducts.

“The overarching goal of NCSU-SMIC, in partnership with CESMII, is to demonstrate smart manufacturing technologies and conduct workforce training and research focused on the pulp and paper industry,” Pal said. “Revolution in smart manufacturing technologies has created new opportunities for products from conceptualization, materials, manufacturing, and logistics. Smart manufacturing technologies can streamline complex operations by allowing devices, sensors, and controls to share information for highly- efficient manufacturing.”

The Department of Forest Biomaterials maintains 51,000- square-feet of laboratory and paper pilot space that is home to an extensive and unique collection of bench- and pilot-scale equipment for testing, research and teaching in biomaterials, wet-end chemistry, pulping, papermaking, recycling, coating and printing. The space includes a Fourdrinier pilot paper machine equipped with a state-of- the-art wet-end, size press and a calendar stack system. Another feature of the pilot plant is a one-of-a-kind tissue creping simulator machine that is used for tissue sheet drying and creping up to 2,000 feet per minute.

“Many manufacturing-intensive industries, including pulp and paper, are currently undergoing a digital transformation where remote manufacturing plants with incredible amounts of unused data are being connected to ‘digital command centers’ capable of real-time processing and interpreting the data, leading to not only increase in production but also in efficiency and adaptability,” said Dr. Hasan Jameel, a professor in the Department of Forest Biomaterials.

The development of smart manufacturing assets, such as advanced sensors, intelligent controls, and machine learning, will significantly benefit the pulp and paper industry, especially the small and medium enterprises that directly compete with larger companies. It will also allow the Department of Forest Biomaterials to harness unprecedented levels of real-time production data and extract high value through predictive modeling and data analytics, creating process and business intelligence to enhance productivity, quality, sustainability, and safety across the whole industry.

The pilot plant will include streaming of real-time big data across classrooms, immersing students in smart manufacturing technologies, according to Dr. Med Byrd, director of undergraduate programs in the Paper Science and Engineering program and associate professor in the Department of Forest Biomaterials.

“Our immediate focus is to develop connectivity between the NC State paper pilot plant facility and the CESMII platform that will acquire data from paper manufacturing equipment, use that data for analysis and deep learning, and control and operation of the papermaking equipment,” Pal said. “We are in the process of integrating new sensors and controls capabilities with the focus on precision, performance, quality, sustainability, and energy management for the paper industry.”

NC State’s SMIC facilities, including the pilot paper plant, are available for industry members to try smart manufacturing solutions and to drive their use of tools such as machine learning, energy productivity and asset performance management.

Without a doubt, the past year was one of the most challenging for the PSE program. The COVID-19 pandemic, and the sudden announcement that students could not return to campus after spring break, made our faculty and staff innovate rapidly to provide a high-quality educational experience for our students. I am proud that we met that challenge! Dr. Pal conducted a virtual paper machine run for seniors, while Dr. Jameel did the same with sophomore bleaching trials and subsequent presentations. I am proud of this group of talented educators.

We continue to grow. From last year’s number of 208, we now have 221 students. This makes (I think) our program the largest paper engineering program outside of China. Our message of good jobs (internships, co-ops, and full time), high salaries, and increasingly sustainable practices continues to attract high-caliber students.

Diligent efforts with new student recruiting continue to pay off. We had 42 new students in the fall of 2019. After one semester, over half of the class had a GPA of 4.0, and the

average class GPA was 3.6. While eight students ultimately decided on a different degree (81% retention rate) for various reasons, we made up for it with the addition of 18 similarly-talented first year students from other programs. The current second-year class is one of the strongest I have seen in years.

We are so thankful to the Board for its willingness to invest funds in our infrastructure. These funds allowed deep industrial cleaning and professional painting of our large and small pilot plants. The result was an improvement in the safety, the overall appeal and organization of the spaces and our ability to teach in them. Other investments in modern furniture for student commons spaces will enhance the collaboration, teamwork and utility of our program, both for visitors and for current students.

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, over half of our corporate partners moved forward with summer internships offered to our students – some changed to stay-at-home projects, but a surprising number were still based on site. This was a gratifying show of support for our program. Some companies that cancelled their summer offers in the interest of safety, showed incredible grace by providing 1-2 months of pay to the students or by making commitments for internships in summer 2021. We feel so lucky to have this level of industrial support.

One of our proudest achievements just concluded this summer. In 2018 and 2019, the faculty optedto leverage student enhancement funds to provide meaningful summer research projects for students who had been on co-op in the prior year or had not been able to obtain an industry internship. The goal was to give these students financial support and a professional experience. The result was an unprecedented 15-20 students each summer doing incredible work with faculty advisers. We took this to an entirely different level in the summer of 2020, adding students who had their internships cancelled because of the pandemic. This resulted in 44 students working with eight faculty and staff on an impressive array of projects. Subjects included: response of paper surfaces to COVID19 virus; artificial intelligence and big data analysis; advanced process control; alternative fiber sources; improved process simulation The students’ quality of work has been amazing.

In an exciting development, our pilot plant and baby paper machine have been designated as a Smart Manufacturing Center with a grant from the Department of Energy’s CESMII program. Funding will permit us to add an impressive array of smart sensors to the machine, archive the data, and then do advanced analysis using the Department of Energy’s cloud-based platform. This effort will educate students on the possibilities of advanced process control, the digital revolution of the industry, and “Industry 4.0.”

Even though we are currently going through a time of uncertainty and fear… the future still looks quite bright. Thanks to our industry partners and our supporters who make this possible.

MEETING THE CHALLENGE OF COVID-19

One year ago it would have been hard to imagine that after spring break, students, faculty and staff would go home, not to return to campus until August. The COVID-19 worldwide pandemic brought fear, isolation and a “new normal”. However, the resiliency of our university, the passion and work ethic of our colleagues and the “Think and Do” attitude embedded in our DNA helped us to make the best of an impossible situation.

There were many things we had to rethink to finish out our academic year. As one would expect, our college, department and program rose to the challenge while learning, accommodating and ultimately, prevailing. Our adjustments and transitions came in a variety of forms and there are many lessons we will take away from this to make us better as we embark upon our future together.

Current StudentsNot only did academic coursework require remote operation, so did the many events and traditions that our students look forward to each and every year. We hosted seven virtual senior design presentations, a virtual senior banquet complete with everyone’s families joining in from home and a celebration of our seniors on the day they would have been walking across the stage. Georgia-Pacific, our annual senior banquet sponsor, was kind enough to send gift packages to our seniors homes and apartments, while the staff hand delivered the departmental gift. While much of our effort was focused on graduating seniors, our faculty and staff came together to host individual check in meetings with 187 students. Finally, we managed 44 students in remote/at home summer internships to provide financial support, professional development and increased industry knowledge.

Incoming StudentsOur incoming freshman group was particularly vulnerable during this time. Not only did their final high school months get sidetracked, there was much unknown about how they

would begin their college career. We hosted an information session, a “get to know your classmates” event, a question and answer session for parents only, new student orientation/advising and a final “connect” event prior to move-in... all virtually! Additionally, a group of PSE upperclassmen established a GroupMe chat and each new student has an upper class “buddy”. To top all of these efforts off, our college recruitment interns hosted a college wide “Summer with CNR” series to continue to educate and bond our new freshman together.

RecruitingSince there is never an “off season” for recruiting, we hosted three virtual paper science and engineering information sessions for high school freshman through juniors. These sessions were very well attended. We also hosted our final admitted student visitation day on line. Finally, we developed an “at home” edgewise compression (paper strength) test that high school students were able to do in our Satellite camp and our college wide, Environmental Career Month. Many of these resources are now located on our newly created YouTube page.

Advisory BoardEven though we cancelled our spring board meeting, banquet and scholarship golf tournament, our board was sent our year to date results and each of our five committees have hosted meetings in preparation for our fall virtual event. Our newly appointed dean, Dr. Myron Floyd hosted numerous update calls for our board members as well as taking this time to meet one on one with alumni and board directors to learn about our industry. The college and department leadership also hosted a call specific to one corporate partner, with plans for more this fall. While we cannot be together in person, the incredibly hard work of our board, alumni and industry continue to enrich and support our program.

I looked forward to enjoying all the celebrations of senior year and having last “hoorahs”. I expected my

senior year to be a struggle between balancing those last moments with my friends and the demands of

senior design. Instead, I had to balance isolation and classwork. All the major events I hoped to finally

participate in as a senior were cancelled. I hold these events dear to my heart because they all celebrate our paper family. However, even though I didn’t get to hug

anyone and we weren’t gathered in a big ballroom with a plate of food in front of us, we still gathered as a

family, and celebrated. We loved, laughed and cried as a family. I am so grateful to call Paper Science at NC

State my home and family. Someday, I will pay it back.

Thank you!

GRADUATION TO VOCATION

Lindsay Leonard’s experience in NC State’s Paper Science and Engineering (PSE) program has led her to many experiences in the pulp and paper industry, and a career that values leadership, sustainability and community. After graduating in December of 2019, with a Chemical Engineering degree as well, she headed to Hartsville, SC to be a process engineer for Sonoco.

How has the College of Natural Resources impacted you and prepared you for your future? The relationships I’ve formed and the experiences I’ve had as a part of the College of Natural Resources have been invaluable in my personal and professional development throughout my time at NC State. The people I met (peers AND faculty) in the PSE program saw something in me that I simply could not see in myself – and they spent the next four-and-a-half years challenging me intellectually and personally, all while supporting me and continuing to believe in me. I’ve learned a lot about myself, my community, our world, and my place in it. I left NC State with the knowledge and experience to add value in my new job, a network of close-knit friends and mentors to rely on, and a new-found confidence in myself and my ability to make a difference.

What’s your favorite memory or class from your time at the College of Natural Resources? Why?I honestly loved all of my classes in the PSE program, but one of my favorites was Dr. Pal’s PSE 472 class – more commonly known as the senior paper machine class. It was really fun to get our hands dirty on the Wolfpack Baby, and it was a great experience to be in the class with people you’ve spent the past four years becoming friends with.

What kind of research or other hands-on/ in-the-field learning did you participate in?I spent a summer at Georgia Tech in the Center for Bio-mediated and Bio-inspired Geotechnics researching methodologies to quantify the chemistries and physical geometries of natural structures for use in sustainable civil engineering applications for hazard mitigation. I spent another summer working for EDT, an enzyme supplier based in Norcross, GA, as a field service engineering intern. At EDT,

I traveled overseas for the first time as a part of a trial team in Sweden, and I spent the rest of the summer doing lab work at the corporate headquarters or working on multiple trials in Tennessee.

I took a co-op with Kimberly-Clark in Beech Island, SC, where I worked as a project engineering intern. I helped lead capital and process optimization projects. I spent a summer with WestRock in West Point, VA, as a process engineering intern in the pulp mill and bleach plant, and worked on six sigma projects and a pulp production increase project. I spent my final summer working with Sonoco in Hartsville, SC, as a process engineering intern across the entire facility. I worked on data analysis, report generation and water tracking across the powerhouse.

What motivated you to pursue your work?Like many of my peers at NC State, I applied as a chemical engineering intent and found myself in PSE via some enthusiastic student recruiters and a Paper Science and Engineering scholarship. Despite my hesitations, I joined the program and ended up falling in love with an industry that I cannot wait to spend my career in. I love putting on my steel-toed boots and ending the day covered in stock, talking to operators in the control room, analyzing Excel data in high-pressure situations, and relaying it via memos and presentations. However, one of my favorite things about the pulp and paper industry is the sense of community that exists within it. I am drawn to a field that values servant leadership, sustainability, safety, and community, and the pulp and paper industry easily checks each of those boxes.

What has life been like since graduation? In January 2020, I started working full-time as a process engineer for Sonoco in Hartsville, SC. I’ve spent my seven months with Sonoco in the powerhouse. I’ve gotten hands-on experience with project management, expanded my knowledge of process control and computing, learned about turbine generators, and spent plenty of time with day-to-day firefighting (sometimes literally). I’m lucky to work with a great team of people who have a deep and diverse knowledge base (and are more than willing to share it with me!) and foster the sense of community that Sonoco is known for. Obviously, I was not expecting a global pandemic and the resulting economic repercussions to happen during my lifetime – much less during my first three months of work. The transition to our “new normal” was definitely not easy; most of the project work I had been doing was stalled, we weren’t allowed to bring in any contractors, and our social distancing measures prevented me from spending my spare time training in the control rooms. However, we all began to adapt to the necessary changes, and it was an extremely eye-opening experience for me to see how critical decisions were made and communicated across the complex and the company in unprecedented times. Overall, although the beginning of my career was not necessarily what I had imagined, I’ve greatly enjoyed the work I’ve gotten to do and I’m thankful for the people I get to do it with! And, I’m grateful that NC State and the PSE program prepared me to enter the paper industry and contribute value-adding work – even in these wildly uncertain times.”
